Lionel Messi

It is quite understandable. I can remember Ronaldo being a great deal better than Messi then, the Champions League Final put paid to that argument. Ever since then, Messi simply has got better and better. Ronaldo has done well, let us be honest about that, but when you are a big name player and the team is missing players that generally score for the team, then you have to take the mantle, you have to do the scoring. Messi had Villa until December of last year then, he had only the likes of Pedro or Sanchez. These two cannot even be compared to the likes of Higuain and Benzema.

The problem is that although Ronaldo scored yesterday, his arrogance in taking virtually every shot whilst he has teammates in better positions to score, could actually be the downfall of Real Madrid.

Back to Messi though, he really is stepping up his game a notch and finally putting some clear daylight between the two as far as I'm concerned.

Jaysus, he had an assist.

How many goals has he had this year? I'm going to assume it is in the 60s range, which is pretty impressive. Messi has deserved the recent highlights with breaking the record, but Ronaldo has nothing to be ashamed of.

Of course it is unlikely to ever happen, but I would love to see Messi in the Premier League, the problem is probably only City or Chelsea could afford him.
I just think it would be really interesting to see how well he would do in a much more physical league, with a more demanding calender.

You what!?

Ideally they go out as soon as possible in the last 16.

I saw that too. Baffling. Like, what?

it would be like getting arse-fecked by charlize theron with a a strap-on.

it won't feel good, but you can't get mad...atleas you were in the presence of a naked goddess.

it won't feel good losing to messi, but atleast it is someone that great making us look foolish...can't get mad at that..like how luiz ronaldo got his standing ovation after hitting a hattrick at OT inside an hour.

What is with you and these...err..."unique" analogies man?

What you say is true of course. However, Messi is only another 39 goals away from beating his own record of goals in a season which is currently at 73 I believe. He has 25 in La Liga, and he has another 22 games to get the other 25 goals to equal his record. The only other player I can see matching him at the moment is not Ronaldo, but Falcao. Falcao is a brilliant player and in the right team, he can do even more damage.

So VoetbalWizard wouldn't mind if he got taken up the arse? Interesting.

Messi in the Pep & Tito era (2008/09-present) in all competitions:

244 apps, 245 goals, 90 assists

pre-Guardiola: 110 apps, 42 goals, 19 assists

---
Messi under Sabella for Argentina (2011/12-present):

15 apps, 14 goals, 5 assists

for comparison, under any other Arg manager his highest gpg was 0.36, his lowest was under Maradona... 0.13 !!

Interesting and mind-boggling stats.

Remember how giddy we got when Ronaldo scored 42 in a season..he's on 34 already

Since the beginning of last season, he's averaged 1.26 goals per game

Currently his career average is 0.81 goals/game but that should reach 1 goal a game by the time he's done.

if we play barca in the CL this season and messi shits on us again, I can't be mad. how can you get mad when you witness greatness like that.

If we get to the final against Barcelona, we need to park the fecking bus - big time. No more of this "we've too much pride to do that in a final"-crap, let's just play like Inter did a couple of years back and hope to nick one at the other end. The way we set up against them in 2011 was incredibly naive and backfired badly. We were way to open, and they almost created chances at will.

That being said, a European final is unlikely judging by our form so far this season.

Can't see him goin down the Fat Ronaldo and Ronaldinho path.

But anything can happen.

That's a reasonable statement, but I'm actually encouraged enough by the 12/13 United side to believe we've got a great shot at making it to the CL final.

(Yes, I realize this is the Messi thread.)

But we'll need some help. If we have to go through Bayern AND Real first that's asking what may be too much for us. We'll probably have to go through one or the other and if we can skip both then we'll surely have to get through Dortmund, so the road ahead will be nasty and brutish but hopefully not short.

Why am I so optimistic? We're coming together very nicely, beating the teams we're supposed to beat and in most (maybe all) we were the deserving winner in the games we actually won. Injured players like Vidic are coming back. And if Vidic can regain top form by February I really like our chances of keeping clean sheets thereafter. De Gea is turning into a monster of a keeper. Cleverley is growing into a man, not just a promising young player. Even Young, whom I have never felt was a United quality winger, has put together some very impressive performances lately. We know about Rafael, of course, but even Evra has worked himself back into outstanding form. Kagawa oozes the class of a CL quality forward/midfielder. Carrick has been quietly fantastic for us this season. Quality abounds in every area of the pitch.

If RvP and Rooney -- arguably the top striker due on the planet -- can stay healthy, why the feck not?

We're 0 for 2 against Messi in CL finals. It's time we make him watch us lift the trophy.

That makes no sense to keep on improving seasons after seasons in which he scored ridiculous amount of goals.Every season for the last 4 years I've always thought he was gonna outscore himself and each time he has and this season he's also on his way too :wenger:

At the start of the season Ronaldo had a solid case for the Ballon d'Or but now it's impossible.

Yeah. Considering the events only until the start o this season, I think that Ronaldo should have got it. But then, Messi decided to break a 40 years old record and score the double of goals Ronaldo scored this season. He'll win it, and unless something very bad happen to him I can't see someone else getting the Ballon d'Or for many years to come. Realistically, I think that he will get 6-7 Golden Balls when he will retire. Not that bad.

Dont know if anyone posted it yet but in the game against Atletico Messi overtook Liverpool in goals this calender year.

That's one of the incredible things about Messi and Ronaldo now. Back then, it was seen as a brilliant fear for Ronaldo to get that many, but it's now a second nature total for the two of them, and in Messi's case he's probably going to do it around the halfway mark of the season. It's ridiculous how good he is now.

Just read he has signed a new deal at Barca keeping him there until 2018, Xavi & Puyol have signed deals until 2016.

feck. That's freaky.

I wasn't too keen on the guy not long ago, and to be honest, I'm still not too keen with him. Why? Not sure. I just remember he had a spat with a player once, and he just seemed to be arrogant as if to say "Do you know who I am? You're nothing". Maybe I just looked too much into it. Nevertheless, he doesn't have that Ronaldinho/Kaka vibe about him to which they always seemed happy.

With that been said, I've now decided that he is indeed the best player I've ever seen - I'm only 20, so I may not have seen the legends of the past live, but I'd be amazed if there were footballers out there better than Messi. Incredible player indeed.

Yeah I agree with the above, used to hate him when I was smaller because of his long hair. His long hair were so shit but he is growing on me

Messi's just upset that no matter how amazing he is, he'll never be the best Argentine on the planet, because marcosdeto has that crown.

Someone mentioned the first page of the thread so I had a quick look

Could we actually be witnessing the greatest player ever?

Seriously, could he one day be regarded as an all time great?

My tip - YES.

Cesc's Mullet will be feeling good about himself right now

I doubt it.

He could be but I don't think he will.

brwned not so much

Our very own Ronaldo is a winger-cum-forward who scored 42 goals in a season. Who has won consecutive league titles and a European Cup and is continually getting to the latter stages of major tournaments whilst making a big impact in those.

Leo who?

Feed me even less so

I think that Messi will be regarded as the better player by the time they both finish their careers.

Ronaldo's definitely been the better player in recent years.

to be fair to brwned he calls this one correctly. Of course no-one could really have imagined those two scoring ludicrous amount of goals in competition with each other back in 2008.

Isn't a player considered great when they excel at the international level also ? I appreciate his talent and someone mentioned this to me.. I'm just curious what you guys here think.

When I thought Messi would surpass Ronaldo I thought he'd do so through his creativity, he was matching Ronaldo in terms of gpg but you didn't see him outscoring the 42-goal man over the course of a season.

Messi's goals to game ratio only looks better because Messi is never fit as long as Ronaldo. If he was, he still wouldn't score as many as Ronaldo over a season.

This one's best - from the same man who said all Fabregas can do is pass so he's not very good:

Rooney all the way and i'll say it again Messi is overated. Messi has developed early physically because Barcelona have payed for treatment for a 'hormonal deficiency' he has and I would'nt be surprised if something dodgy has gone on. This is the reason Messi is good for his age and its the same as what happend to Freddie Adu who developed years earlier than most and look at him now.

Thats exactly what i'm saying Adu has done nothing since he turned 16 but when he was 14 he was playing with grownmen (football that is) because he developed early not because he was going to be something special. Messi is good because he has developed early.
