Thank you both, Skorenzy and Inspectah deck.

Didn't expect it to be so high, only RvN slightly above him in the modern era (due to Messi having an extra game) and he had a much higher proportion of starts as opposed to sub appearances.

No problem.

Just as a note: The stats I gave for Raúl, Messi and RvN are all for the tournament proper (so excluding qualifying games), which isn't hard to do for the first two because they haven't played a single CL qualifier; but for RvN it would actually worsen his gpg although he would have a couple more goals (60 goals in 81 apps including qualifying <=> 56 in 73 excluding)

Godfrey Chitalu might have 107, fifa are looking into it apparently. Poor sod, being outshone by a dead man.

Messi's only sub-optimal move in his illustrious career was choosing to play for Argentina instead of Spain. He could have won 2 Euros, a world cup, and with him in their side Spain would walk Brazil 2014.

In what some Ghanaian second league in 1959?

Surely doesn't count lol.

Rojo is a decent fullback?

He has been playing CB for Sporting and is absolutely dreadful.

Has he broken it? Or he's yet to?

Zambia has put forward a player who died in the plane crash in 93 (Although at time he was a manager of the team) who scored 107 goals in a season

Messi awaits for FIFA decision.

Apparently now Flamengo is sending "official documents" to FIFA to prove that Zico actually scored 81 goals for them and 8 for Brazil in 1979 (even though RSSSF disputes this)... the whole world has suddenly gone mad over a ridiculous, invented record

He's right tbh. It'd be a big joke if those goals are taken into account.wtf were they waiting during all this time ? They just remembered all of this ?

The player's record has apparantly been official knowledge in Zambia for a long time, just not been recognized internationally.

Cant help but think that its questionable to count records so far back from Africa anyway. Wasnt it the Zambian team in one WC during the 60s who didnt even know how a free kick / penalty was supposed to be executed properly?

If some micro-state like Fiji or Maui has a "top" league on the same level of Sunday football in other countries and some guy scores 120 goals over the course of 50 games there, should he be allowed the record? It would be a pointless record then, basically all about playing in the worst league rather than being the best goal scorer.

Mullers record was at least set in a time where football was a big deal and several greats were playing in one of the best leagues in the world. Messi broke that record under similar circumstances. This new "record" is set under very different circumstances.

That weighing of the Golden Boot is absolutely ridiculous. They arbitrarily decide that goals in the top 5 leagues should count 33% more than everywhere else? It's made up so that it almost always goes to top leagues muppet-dream-players.

For years it was a simple trophy for the top scorer in Europe. How complicated they have to be? This isn't the Balloon d'Or, what's the problem if it goes to someone in Netherlands or an unknown dude in Ukraine?

If anything, they could have bothered giving it a formula that made the goals count proportionately to the number of goals scored in the league, so that it isn't almost always a Dutch to win it. But the way it is now it's a joke of a trophy.

That is a lot better idea than just arbitrarily giving the top 5 leagues +33%. Its not like it seems hard for Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra and Falcao to top the charts anyway in their "difficult" leagues.

...another 2 goals tonight. General all round play was quality at times. Granted that he was against a second division Spanish side but his play up top and passing was great.

ronaldo just can not keep up with his insame rate of scoring.

Messi has now scored in 11 of his 13 away games this season in all competitions... in the remaining two away games he had 2 assists in each game

88 with 2 games left to play this calendar year.

Predictions for what he will finish on?

93 I reckon, 2 against Atletico and 3 against Valladolid.

is that where the player kicked the free kick away as his life was in danger or something like that?

Yeah its often misunderstood and ridiculed but they were under a dictatorship I think and had serious threats to themselves and their families if they were humiliated by brazil so they just did whatever they could.

The Reuters African football correspondent was on TalkSport yesterday and be said that the record was now Messi's and the claim from Zambia is plain bollocks. He told Hawksby and Jacobs to call the Zambia FA and ask them for the breakdown of their current squad by the number of caps and claimed that they are so shit at keeping records, they wouldn't be able to tell you!

I'm not sure that the record belongs to Godfrey!

The only criteria for records should be whether it's professional football or not and whether the records are reliable. I doubt the situation in Zambia qualifies as one of these.

But if it did, I see no problem in the record being there. I don't think the "level" of the league should be brought into this, as long as it is at least professional level and organized by official ruling bodies of football.

Pretty much this, even though it might be 'unfair' we are counting goals in a calender year, that's the parameter of the record. There aren't any other factors whatsoever. Whoever scores the most goals in a year is the record holder, it doesn't matter where or when they played as long as the records are reliable and it is a professional league.
