Lionel Messi

Yep, I don't think there's many doubts about it, unless something extraordinary happens. These two today are a massive boost. One less game, but two less goals to make it.

Very close indeed, he'll make it bar any injury.

Indeed, he must be hurt pretty bad when Ronaldo has the best season in his career in terms of productivity and ends up some 15 or 20 goals behind Messi.

But remember, if he beats Muller's record it'll be ONLY because he played more games. Play ANY player instead of Messi 65-70 times a year and he'll score 80-85 goals in a year too!! Ronaldo would score A THOUSAND if he played this much. It has nothing to do with Messi's ability, anyone could do that.

Did I say any of that?

I merely pointed out that even when he does break the record, it is down to the fact that he'd have played more games. Is that not true?

Also, I was reminded many times the season before last that goals galore after the title is decided means feck all.

i see you are hurting. i feel for you*

*not

I've been watching a bit of the game and I have no doubt that Messi is a very decent player.

Cal? (this is not a question, it's just your name), the truth is actually, Muller only scored that many goals because he played in sh*tter competitions compared to the ones Messi plays in. ;)

And how many of those did Messi score this year?? And do you know how many of those Muller scored in his record breaking year??

If he gets a hattrick tonight, it will put him just 4 goals behind Mullers record. That will give him just one calendar month to get the 4 goals needed. He can get to 90 I think.

Any idea how many games he has left to do it in? With La Liga he could probably manage to achieve 4 goals in one game.

I think it's the 5 La Liga games that you count on.. Not sure he'll play in the other games.

Probably not, but who knows. If he's playing now with 65 minutes and 3-0 than he might play any other game.

He won't need it though, he'll have this wrapped up in the next 2 La Liga games.

How many goals does he need?

He won't play v Benfica. Tito's already said they'll play their younger players once qualification is secured.

Messi has an ego, if for instance there are one or two games left for him to break the record and those games are Copa Del Rey matches, I'm sure he'll feature in some way.
It shouldn't even come to that

True, he will play if needed. It's his opportunity to set an all-time high that likely won't be broken so soon. He's the most likely to break it again but I don't think he will, not because of him but because I have the feeling Barcelona will enter a slightly less dominating phase.

All top class athletes have egos just some have bigger egos than others.

But as you stated he will play just like that meaningless friendly in Saudi Arabia. However, I really cannot fault an athlete for playing competitive matches if a record is within sight (the Saudi friendly a different story).

No, it's down to the fact that he is an excellent player. He didn't have a privilege to play in a competition with nearly 8 goals per game average either, nor was he a poacher, he has much more to his game.

I may have given the idea that it was a bad thing from him to play the meaningless matches but I didn't mean it tbh. It's still competitive matches and well done if he scores in them

He did't even score , and I'm pretty sure it was also because: 1- it was a pre-condition for the agreement between the two sides (when teams arrange a friendly with Argentina on their home soil they expect Messi to play!). 2- Messi will be slated if he misses a game for Argentina.

I've been telling he's a very decent player for the best part of three years, yet not a single poster has recognized my keen instinct on spotting him as the real deal.

Again, did I say anything to the contrary? Never denied he's a better player than Muller was.

I merely stated a fact, some of you seem so touchy about it...

4 goals needed with 8 games left.

So two goals so far.How close is he then ?

On 82 goals now, so 3 more to equal and 4 to break Müller's record.

His (and Barça's) away form last season in the league was one of the factors why they lost La Liga; so far this season his record in the league reads:

13 apps (12 starts), 19 goals, 5 assists
- home: 6 apps (6 starts), 6 goals, 2 assists
- away: 7 apps (6 starts), 13 goals, 3 assists

and in all competitions: 20 apps (19 starts), 26 goals, 8 assists
with 17 of those goals coming away from home

furthermore he's scored in 70% of the games he's played in (14 out of 20) and there's only 3 games in which he has no direct contribution (goal or assist)...

also 5 goals in 6 games for Argentina this season

Best season start ever?

4 goals needed with 8 games left.

Practically 4 games left. I doubt he'll play in any of the cup games or the remaining CL game against Benfica.

The other four remaining games aren't easy either..

Athletic Bilbao (H), Real Betis (A), Atletico Madrid (H), Valladolid (A).

Well but it's not like he only scores against small teams though, is it?

The record is as good as done, if he doesn't get injured.

You sure see the glass half empty these days when anything Barca related comes up.

Tell me. Will Barcelona, in your opinion, win the league this year?
Will Messi break Müller's record? What do you think?

I've been following football for a long time. I've seen a LOT.. 11 points with 20+ games left is nothing in league terms. I don't even wanna go over-analytical and tell you that Barcelona's games in the second half of the season are tougher than the first half (the tough games away), because it doesn't matter. One dip in form, for whatever reason, and the league changes up-side down. Who thought we'd lose the league last year, with only a few weeks remaining?! It looked a sure thing didn't it?? Do I think Barcelona will win it this year, yeah, I THINK they will win it, but it's like 60%-40% in their favor, far from a sure thing, which many seem to be suggesting here..

Will Messi break the record? He's close now, but isn't Ronaldo on a 1 goal / 6 games run now? Who thought that would happen? Anything is possible. Do I think he'll break the record, yeah I THINK he'll break it. But again, still far from being a sure thing, which again, many seem to be suggesting here.

Things change in football much quicker than you think.

Of course everything could happen but Messi could also score a hattrick in all of his remaining games and beat the record by a country mile, just like Barca may go on and not lose a single game anymore this season.

His point was that you are automatically assuming the worst outcome, which I can understand to an extend because I'm usually a pessimist myself, funnily enough that only seems to apply to stuff concerning our team, which means that I'm quite confident he will break the record even though all those personal records would be quite meaningless if he would end up not winning anything this season with Barca.
