just tied pele's record

Pfft, back in the day players used to have to make do with kicking stone boulders around in swamps, whilst facing near certain death from the axe-wielding psychopaths they regularly came up against each week. Messi's nothing compared to Pele.

Defenders back then even had guns..

Will be 4th time in a row, that he will pick up the World player of the year award. To be honest he can go on the biggest streak of picking up those awards as long as he stays injury free.

Truly pissed off at Al Jazeera & BeIN.

Been watching La Liga religiously for 6 yrs now .. well, up until this season and those f@cks buy up the international rights without a Canadian broadcaster lined up denying us the chance to continue to witness history in the making.

Total cnuts, the lot of em.

How many games has he left this year to score the 9 more goals needed?

9. Won't be easy at all, but perfectly possible.

Zaragoza (h) - La Liga
Spartak Moscow (a) - CL
Levante (h) - La Liga
Alavés (h) - Copa del Rey
Athletic Bilbao (h) - La Liga
Benfica (h) - CL
Betis (a) - La Liga
Atletico Madrid (h) - La Liga
Valladolid (a) - La Liga

6 home games and the away ones aren't that hard so he may very well nick it. Those are just the Barcelona games, don't know if he's to play an official match with Argentina this year. If he is, it's a lot more probable he'll make it.

Seems to me that they're going to have a tougher spring than fall. All the top teams away in the latter half of the season.

He won't play that Alavés match. Not unless he insists it himself.

Levante and Betis away are by no means easy games. Actually they're among the harder ones, together with Osasuna and Athletic away.

Before last night's 2-1 win Mourinho's RM hadn't even scored against Levante away (0-0 draw and 1-0 defeat). also a 2-0 defeat in the cup although that was irrelevant because they were leading 8-0 from the home leg :D
And in the one away game to Betis they narrowly won 3-2.

For Barça it's more of the same;
- away to Levante: 1-1 draw and 2-1 win
- away to Betis: 3-1 defeat in the cup (with a fairly strong side containing Messi) and 2-2 draw in the league

Never a win by more than a goal, and a couple of defeats and draws away to these teams in the past 2 seasons.

Yeah, well, I don't think it likely that he will score in all of those game. He'll probably need to pull an hat-trick somewhere or something like that to make it possible.

Also, a newbie reminded me there will be 2 more cup games in mid-December, should they pass Alavés.

I don't really know him enough to know if he'll want to play in these games even if not needed. But if he's focused on the goal, 11 games is pretty doable.

Well, since 2008/09 it's been pretty much the same pattern for cup games; he never plays the 1st leg of the Round of 32, usually comes on as a sub for the 2nd leg and then plays both legs of Round of 16 as starter or sub.

2008/09
R32 - 1st leg - Benidorm v Barcelona 0-1, not involved
R32 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Benidorm 1-0, starter (1 goal)
R16 - 1st leg - Atlético v Barcelona 1-3, starter (3 goals)
R16 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Atlético 2-1, sub

2009/10
R32 - 1st leg - Cultural Leonesa v Barcelona 0-2, not involved
R32 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Cultural Leonesa 5-0, sub (1 goal)
R16 - 1st leg - Barcelona v Sevilla 1-2, starter
R16 - 2nd leg - Sevilla v Barcelona 0-1, starter

2010/11
R32 - 1st leg - Ceuta v Barcelona 0-2, not involved
R32 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Ceuta 5-1, sub (1 goal, 1 assist)
R16 - 1st leg - Barcelona v Athletic 0-0, sub
R16 - 2nd leg - Athletic v Barcelona 1-1, starter (1 assist)

2011/12
R32 - 1st leg - Hospitalet v Barcelona 0-1, not involved
R32 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Hospitalet 9-0, not involved
R16 - 1st leg - Barcelona v Osasuna 4-0, sub (2 goals)
R16 - 2nd leg - Osasuna v Barcelona 1-2, sub (1 assist)

2012/13
R32 - 1st leg - Alavés v Barcelona 0-3, not involved
R32 - 2nd leg - Barcelona v Alavés ?-?, sub(?)
R16 - 1st leg - Barcelona v Córdoba/Real Sociedad ?-?
R16 - 2nd leg - Córdoba/Real Sociedad v Barcelona ?-?

A lot will depend on the R16 games; opponent (Córdoba leads the tie 2-0), result of the 1st leg combined with league games.
His full schedule would look like this:

14.11.2012 - Saudi Arabia (A), Int. Friendly
17.11.2012 - Zaragoza (H), La Liga J12
20.11.2012 - Spartak Moscow (A), Champs. Lge. MD5
25.11.2012 - Levante (A), La Liga J13
28.11.2012 - Alavés (H), Copa del Rey R32 2nd leg
01.12.2012 - Athletic (H), La Liga J14
05.12.2012 - Benfica (H), Champs. Lge. MD6
09.12.2012 - Betis (A), La Liga J15
12.12.2012 - Córdoba/Real Sociedad (H), Copa del Rey R16 1st leg
16.12.2012 - Atlético (H), La Liga J16
19.12.2012 - Córdoba/Real Sociedad (A), Copa del Rey R16 2nd leg
22.12.2012 - Valladolid (A), La Liga J17

12 more games in theory, results will most likely determine how many he plays, but he's probably guaranteed 7-8 at the very least.

...

I've got too much time on my hands :nervous:

He'll bag a hattrick against Alaves and probably a few against Zaragoza. He'll make it.

Zaragoza, Levante and Alaves will be a good opportunity to score a few. Benfica at home won't be a particularly hard game for Barcelona too, I can see them winning 3-0/4-0. Even Bilbao are quite bad defensively and could concede more than a couple. It's really a very comfortable fixture list and he should have no problem scoring 10 more goals, even reaching the 90-goal mark is perfectly possible.

The kind of record he's going to set won't be beaten in ages unless it's by him. Wonderful player and to think scoring goals isn't the only thing he excels at.

It's an amazing goal tally. Curious what Ronaldo is currently on for this calendar year. He's surely over 50 if not 60.

Always wondered what the Brazilian Ronaldo could have achieved had he never had significant injuries. Would he have made similar goal tally marks?

Any thoughts on if Falcao can eventually emulate these high goal tallies?

Brazilian Ronaldo was a bit hampered by the fact that none of the teams he played for had the kind of ridiculous point averages Barcelona and Madrid are seeing these last few years. The dominance of the teams he played for wasnt close to the dominance of Barca and Real of the last 2-3 years.

Would have been  to see him in his prime playing for Barca or Real of today.

Ronaldo is on 54 for Real Madrid.

Didn't know Gerd Muller holds the record for most goals scored in a year. As more scoring records get broken, the more the achievements of this man come to light. Incredible goalscorer.

This "calendar year" is a bit random though. He already holds the record for most goals in a season, doesn't he? That's the big prize in my book. Calendar years mean nothing in football.

Surely after this he'll go for the record of most goals scored between February and May. If he hasn't got that one already that is.

Ballon d'Or?

I agree that the season matters, not the calendar year.

Everything reflects consistency. A calendar year isn't any kind of more special measure of doing that. Everyone knows he's a consistent player. Don't need the specific measure of 365 days to tell you that.

The calendar year reflects consistency. Very few players can finish a season AND start the next season strongly.

Didn't Liverpool win a "Calendar year moral league" a few years ago? :smirk:

I didn't invent this measure to prove that Messi is consistent.. They have invented this ever since the Muller days apparently.. I'm merely commenting on something I notice with a lot of players, and teams. The team or the player that finishes strong usually starts out a bit slow after the Summer break. It takes a very disciplined player (or team) to keep the momentum going through the 2-3 months break.

Evening all. Here is a link for the complete statistics of Lionel Messi's career from his very first game up until now. I have converted it to a spreadsheet and can give various facts if you so wish.

http://kahkonen.arkku.net/messi/?matches/index/

Including all matches, Messi has played 33,064 minutes in his entire career, Pele has played over 120,000 minutes in his career. Messi has scored 304 goals which makes it a goal every 108 minutes. He has directly assisted a goal 155 times, therefore he has either scored or directly contributed to a goal for Barcelona a phenomenal 459 times in 33,064 minutes or a goal or direct assist every 72 minutes. His international record up until Maradona left at the end of the World Cup was a total of 3,830 minutes played, with 13 goals scored and 17 assists. A goal every 294 minutes and an assist every 225 minutes. However, his International record post-Maradona reads 2,244 minutes played, 18 goals scored and 11 assists. With a goal every 124 minutes and an assist every 204 minutes, with a combined total of goals and direct assist to a goal of one goal or assist every 72 minutes, compared to a goal and direct assist every 127 minutes until Maradona finally left.
