To be honest I don't think he cares THAT much about personal records, nor does Villanova. I think the priority for both is winning as many titles as possible.

Whether they admit it or not I honestly all footballers are arrogant in a way. It's what drives them to surpass themselves and improve as footballers.I may be talking out of my arse but I'm pretty sure he does care about individual titles.

I didn't say doesn't care, I said doesn't care THAT MUCH so he risks an injury or tiring himself in a not-so-importart game, as he prefers to shine in the important games that decide the titles, rather than collect a record of random/unimportant goals.

There's a type of healthy arrogance which you need to have if you aim to be a top class footballer

Can Messi do it on a cold wet night in Glasgae? Nae chance

He did very well, best attacking player on the pitch by a mile last night. Without him Barcelona would probably have up to 50% less attempts on target, and all the best chances arose when he made the shot or assist (except, ironically, for his goal).

Exactly, how dare anyone question the best player in the world ever ever (TM), whenever Barca struggle, it's just his useless team mates letting him down.

Eh?? ... I was just making the point that tonight he was hugely influential to almost every goalscoring chance Barcelona created and I thought he was the best offensive player on the pitch, not man of the match. That should, rightfully, go to a Celtic player. My personal pick would be maybe the young LB (Matthews?) or the goalie.

Barcelona lose to Celtic and everybody seems to have made their mind up that he played a bad game, while he was completely crap when they beat Celta Vigo this weekend but no-one mentions that...

You're disgusting in your Messi hate. Does this seem impossible to you that a player has a good game in spite of his team losing, unless it's Ronaldo (who was terrible against Dortmund by the way)?

He excelled as usual. However, given that almost every opportunity Barcelona created was across the face of the six-yard box, he didn't do a great job of leading the line or getting on the end of the chances created.

he's not a number 9 dude. Most of the chances were crosses from Alves, he's not big enough to win those duels with the likes of Ambrose.

Anyway, like they say he pretty much created everything for them, and as for the original question. He's played 3 times in Glasgow now, each on cold nights, and scored 3 times

Didn't he score from around that area?

And he tends to be the person putting the balls across the six-yard box.

Only when Vilanova moved him to the right to accommodate Fabregas and Villa.

Granted it's usually Messi creating, however last night Alba and Alves put a lot of telling crosses across the face of goal that nobody got near.

Right, got it.

I take it the fact you're resorting to this type of comments means you've given up on rational debate, but that's not for me even if I'm so effing tired of Messi and Cristiano fans going at each other's throats, distorting each and every argument, scanning every line for semantics and seeing everything in black and white.

Messi's been my favourite player since 2006 and I consider him the best player currently and over the past few years, but he has many faults like everyone, he isn't perfect on or off the pitch. But, honestly, this is ridiculous. It's come to the point that if I praise him for something I've got Cristiano fans on my back, and if I criticise him I have Messi fans getting their knickers all in a bunch.

My personal opinion is that he was good against Celtic, that doesn't exclude the possibility of criticism does it? I'm just not really seeing any major one for that game.

You're weird.

He played well last night. Some very incisive passing, good dribbling and a goal (albeit a simple finish). Could've had another if not more a fantastic save from the keeper, and he hit the bar too. Definitely Barcelona's best player, I thought.

the important thing is that he scored one more goal, so he needs only two to tie pele's best calendar year

and i also think that yesterday he was barcelona's best player, the only reason they lost was that in celtic plays Forster -great goalie- and in barcelona Valdez -i blame him for the first goal-

He has never had a rational debate here.

Obviously Messi was Barca's best player against Celtic, and it wasn't really his fault that Barcelona conceded two stupid goals.. Forster had a good game as well.

I think his team really need another player who can dribble and open teams up more. At times the rest of them play like attacking robots with him being the only one to split teams apart.

I think above all Iniesta and Xavi need to start taking more risks with their passing when they're up against defensive walls; last night Messi was the only player on both sides to even attempt a through ball (he had 2 successful ones out of 2 attempts, both resulting in very good shots on goal) according to WhoScored.com

The '?' after 'cal' is so awkward, I always think that when someone posts his name they are asking a hypothetical question.

they were the two biggest culprits last night. Sometimes I wonder if Xavi's too worried about his passing stats, he never seems to go for the killer ball anymore, instead the two of them played it safe each time, none of them looking to really open them up.

They'll need to sort it or suffer the same consequences as this and the chelsea game again.

also read this morning that goal makes him the highest scorer in Cl history n away games, not sure if thats correct

I didn't even watch the game, I certainly expect he was Barca's best player last night as usual, just found it quite funny how some people need to continually remind everyone he always does well...

I read that too, 25 goals is the number.

tbf you can see where cal is coming from, sometimes when Barca play bad then some people are so keen to remind how well Messi played, even when he hasn't. People always do it, not just on this board either. On fb, twitter etc. It's a bit odd, like he isn't prone to error. He is smashing mad records though, what age does everyone think he will retire? Can he carry on into his late thirties?

Obviously, if it wasn't the case tonight, then it's stupid to bring it up. Save it for a night when it applies..

Don't let Cal? cal you. :nono:

Like I said, I didn't watch the game and certainly didn't care, they'd win their group anyway, so I doesn't bother me if they lost or if Messi scored 8 goals in a 0-8 win.

Just a general comment about how Messi never Evers has a bad game, it's a bit like Henry in his L'Arse days, even with that terrible CL record of Arsenal's, it was never ever Henry's fault.

So you didn't watch the game yet you still come in here to try and drag down Messi? He wasn't brilliant last night, but no one always is, and he was still one of their better players. I'll advise you to stop being bitter now. You've become overly obsessed to the stage of people just laughing at you.

How much of Messi's brilliance comes down to the players he has around him? Would he be any less great in a weaker side?

last night and goals and assist stats would suggest not much. Even in that Celtic game he was really the only one who ever looked like breaking them. Add to that his recent form for his country under a proper coach.

Relevated, the only reason people retaliated was because someone suggested he'd struggled when he had a relatively good game and scored twice previously in that stadium!

You're blind if you can't see that Barcelona is virtually completely geared towards Messi. You don't attain the stats he's had over the last calender year by the rest of your team being virtually completely selfless. Hence the reason that when he burned out at the end of last season, barcelona were found wanting.

Real have sort of dealt with this by slightly lessening the emphasis on Ronaldo and bringing Ozil and Benzema into the focal point alongside him.
