Lionel Messi

Hmm... unlike you, I don't make ridiculous claims about you-know-who having had a great WC, even though he did outscore your precious Messi.

 That was like a little phrase amongst the paragraphs and paragraphs I've written... it must have hurt you so much it stuck. Awww... sorry. What a tragic, tragic story you have with Ronaldo.

I'm sorry, you are still making no sense at all. Even after reading all your posts, I don't understand how you can unilaterally declare that Messi individually was the best player and continue to claim all others don't understand football.

What are you using as a criteria to come to this conclusion? Stats? Impact on the team? Youtube clips? There must be something there. Nobody is saying that the Golden boot winner is the best player because he scored more than others. There are some serious candidates who did very well for their team.

Messi is a fine player. He's head and shoulders above the rest of the lot. Probably Ronaldo is a good competitor for him, but even he's second best to Messi. But to claim Messi had a great tournament, (not only great, but he was the best player of the tournament), pass me the stuff you are smoking. After a disappointing football season, it's the least we can all do.

He was the best performer because he played better than everyone else, even Del Bosque shares that opinion... is he smoking too? Its just that you don't like the point, it bugs the hell out of you. I'm pretty sure you didn't even watch him at the time (my opinion), but you're just sure he wasn't the best. But like I said that's fine, I'm not forcing you to believe me or even see sense in my point.

How are you saying he played better in the World Cup than anyone else? Is it because he's more talented? There should be some logic by which you are judging him to have played better? Coz 'Better' surely means a relative comparison.

Nothing is bugging the hell out of me. I'm more than happy to agree that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world right now. I just don't see how he was the best player in the world cup.

 Why would it hurt, at all? I rather enjoy you Messi worshippers digging a bigger and bigger hole for yourselves hyping his chances in 2014.

 You said you've read through my posts and come to the conclusion that my argument makes no sense... So why are you interested in debating nonsense? You're tedious.

It was such a tiny part of my posts but yet it stuck and prompted your response to me... obviously it hurt. Your 2014 hopes and dreams are just a last refuge, a bid to comfort yourself and alleviate your bitterness at the fact that, in your bizarre fantasies, what you see as our god delivered coz he's the best player on the planet and will go down as the best ever and yet your god... again, tragic. You can't even say his name anymore.

Antonio Cassano (gazzetta/yahoo.it):

"Non ero contento quando ha vinto il campionato il Real Madrid perché a me piace più il Barcellona, perché giocano meglio e perché lì c'è Messi, il più forte di tutti. Io sto sveglio sino alle tre del mattino per guardarlo."

Translates as:

"I was not happy when Real Madrid won the league because I like more Barcelona, because they play better and because there is Messi, the best of all. I stay awake till three in the morning only to watch him."

Good lad.

Huntelaar on Messi:

"Who's better, Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? Messi. Ronaldo is good, but Messi is ten times better. Messi can dribble someone on a square metre, while Ronaldo needs more space. It’s talent against training. Ronaldo also has talent, but most is acquired. It’s not less skilful, but it’s not as beautiful and good. Messi is pure class."

Go Italy and Netherlands.

There have been a few players described as the new George Best over the years, but this is the first time it's been a compliment to me." George Best,

Ronaldo is better than George Best and Denis Law, who were two brilliant and great players in the history of United. Johan Cruyff

For me he is the best player in the world. A machine. Incomparable. Fernando Torres on Ronaldo

Actually if you've read this thread, you'd find that it's because some of the mods get all upset if you mention him in this thread.

Seen this quite a few times now. You really think people didnt watch Argentina matches at the WC Or is it simply a case of someone not agreeing with you must not have watched the match?

Personally I don't feel the need to call him the best ever or to mention his national team performances (which have gotten better for more than a year now). He's by some distance the best ever player I've watched during my footballing "era".

Same here koroux. Quite comfortably the best player i've seen play. Comparisons across generations and the need to label someone the best "ever" always seem pointless to me.

I want to say Maradona is still better because I like his style of play more, but it's getting hard to keep it up.

82 goals. feck me.

Same here, by a long distance

That looks incredibly out of place as the first post on a new page....

Not about agreeing, many (not everyone) are saying stuff that indicates to me they didn't really watch Messi. Before I posted his performances I saw quite a few posts saying he played "average". So I'm pretty sure of that, its just my opinion, deal with it.

Great quote from George Best there!

I actually feel sorry for Ronaldo, if Messi wasn't around he would get all the plaudits he deserves. But he never will whilst Messi is playing... Ronaldo is such a tremendous player is almost untrue. You just know he's going to score, and you just can't do anything about it. Same with Messi, you just know he's going to take you on and dribble past 3 players, then score. And you can't do anything about that either.

Two of the greatest players ever. If they continue on their merry path they should (and will) be remembered up with (and maybe even more favourably) than the likes of Maradona and Pele.

Indeed

No way Ronaldo is in the Pele - Maradona bracket... his achievements are way below par.

The need to deride the kind of goals Ronaldo scores is truly pathetic. How many of the people saying he's not in the same league as Pele, Maradona etc actually saw those players play regularly?

Disagree. Messi is on his way to breaking into the top 10 of all-time, and will probably end up in the same bracket as Maradona and Pelé (but maybe not beyond them, depending on some factors). Cristiano Ronaldo on the other hand maybe just creeps into the top 30 and will only get closer based on stats or honours, because in terms of performances he doesn't look like improving on his peak which for me was 2005-2008/2010 in his club career and 2003-2006 with Portugal.

All just my opinion, though.

The only people who would've saw them both regularly are the very lucky few that happened to live in both Brazil and Argentina/Italy. Are they the only ones who can talk about them? No-one can argue that Ronaldo passing game is lacking, and I don't think it's unfair to say Ronaldo's dribbling isn't up there with the best around either... in terms of everything else he's brilliant, no question, but they're two of the biggest facets of an attacking players' game. No-one doubted those aspects of Pele's game and he had the rest - striking, heading, pace, power etc. Never mind Pele's dominance at both international and club level, a level Ronaldo's not matched on either stage, and his capacity to score crucial goals in crucial games against the very best at the highest level. So that's ability, success and the penchant for truly great, timeless contributions that Pele comes out on top on quite convincingly... what does Ronaldo have in his favour? He played in Europe?

It's senseless to say such a thing, it makes it clear the person's seen nothing of Pele nor bothered to even read up on the level he reached... so why bother mentioning him if you know nothing of him? Simple sensationalism, I imagine, or maybe just the naive blind belief that the best players of your generation are the best of any generation.
