By his standards he was playing womans football. Poorly. By normal standards he was really poor. Lots of misplaced passes, lost the ball and made a mess of two great chances and a penalty.

Bad time for a form dip. Barca are simply too dependent on him for goals. That has put him under even more pressure to score when they go behind.
Usually he performs excellently in the big matches, but that's the second time he has performed poorly. Perhaps, the fatigue has taken it's toll on him.
More to do with Chelsea completely suffocating him, besides the penalty ofcourse.

His poor performance is even more highlighted by his team mates not stepping up in his absence. It's only a few games over a whole season but boy did he pick his time to miss chances.
Barca have a cracking team but they really do rely on Messi for their end product.

They are missing Villa and an in form Pedro. Cuenca and Tello for all their talent couldn't fill that gap and Sanchez seams to be still not fully integrated into Barcas overall play.

I think the problem with this Barca is not Messi but Xavi and Iniesta, they are tired and they can't find holes for Messi like before. Then Chelsea was lucky 2 balls hiting the crossbar/post and the fact Barca doesn't adapt to the games, they needed a tall target in the box to cross and shoot from far since the other team parked an entire city in front the goal. I really don't think Chelsea winning is good for football, football is about entertainment or used to be and I'm not a fan of Barca style of play but Chelsea's style ......
