Lionel Messi

How strange it is that a 5'6 inch midget is dominating football at a time when players are bigger, stronger and faster than ever.

I wouldn't say that they are bigger and stronger. Definitely not bigger. But he thrives in fast play. Slow it down and he would probably have less assists because slowing it down would make the team easier to defend against and therefor less holes for him that he's opened up to pass through.

Cesar's widow:

"I'm very happy Messi surpassed my husband because Messi is a very good person, like my husband was."

Fantastic player. I must admit I love watching him play even if he doesn't play for my team and pretty shat on us the last time we played them.

I'm glad I've been able to watch this guy. Comes only once a generation. Its been a privilege so far and the bizarre thing is he's only 24 still.

Amazing player but the Ronaldinho of 2005-2006 would thrive just as much in this Barça team

Anyone else think that by the time Messi finishes his career, the likes of Pele and Maradona will be relegated to a "level" below Messi?

I don't personally, Zidane and Ronaldinho had more creativity and charisma to them

Jury is out on Messi till he performs for another team than one of the best ever

Puyol in twitter says 'Felicidades maquina'

What does maquina mean?

I can't stand the little midget as I've said before but I think he's surely got to be rated as good as Pele and Maradona now, I think he'll surpass them for sure. If I can grit myself and say that then it's probably true.

Sometimes I wish he would go to England just to prove me wrong about his ability and about how the team is geared to him and that he's always playing at 70% and can raise it to 100% due to the set-up and style of Barca.

But then I think he's an amazing freak and how gifted he is.
He'd just get chopped to feck in the Premier League. Which would be quite sad.

I don't know if you're being serious, but that last part is nonsense. He wouldn't struggle in the Premier League. He'd rip the league apart. Those defenders wanting to kick lumps out of him would find themselves kicking thin air most of the time.

Anyway, incredible from him. To have such a massive goals tally at what is still a young age, in the modern game, is incredible.

I don't think so to be honest.
I'd love to see it and I can just as easily see someone Shawcross him and be out for a season.

Like aguero, mata, silva, nani or Ronaldo were kicked all the time? Just because we tackle more, it doesn't mean that he'd be injured all the time. Messi gets kicked as much as any player out there in Spain, he just doesn't roll around or feign injury, and most of the tackles he manages to skip past anyways. He's got tremendous balance and a low center of gravity which makes it difficult for opponents to knock him down, and because he is so quick most of the time hem ages to evade tackles. Would have close to the same numbers if he played in the premier league, or anywhere else. He's just that good.

That's not much more likely to happen in this league than it is in Spain, unless you're engulfed in the words of the English pundits and their overrating of this league.

Top quality players from La Liga who rely on their technical ability, like Silva and Mata, have coped fine in the Premier League and have gotten even better. Why would Messi be any different? He's the same, except he's another class above players like Silva and Mata.

Spose it is just as much luck as it is the styles of 'all-in' defending and the more cultural 'tracking' of the La Liga.

Anyway - don't wan't to turn this into a 'would Messi play well in the Premier League thread' cause I definitely think he would and would have loved to see it in his prime but I think in general the defensive styles and the more reckless nature of the lower teams in the English league would and possibly could put a premature end to it.

I certainly don't wan't that. He's a footballing national treasure and plays with such humility and limitlessness.

Certainly glad to have witnessed such grace and power in my lifetime. These players come once or twice a generation.

It's a must ... to see this Barcelona team, and obviously Messi in the flesh at least once, though not necessarily at the Camp Nou.

A shame (not for United's sake of course) he didn't play in the pre season friendly at the start of the season between the two teams, I was at that game and would have loved for all the best players to have played.

Has to be Nou Camp for me. I was 10mins from booking the second leg of the supa cup at the Nou camp but pulled out because of money. Tickets were on General sale for that massive game and it finished 3-2 with 2 reds? and that Mourinho eye poke moment.

Without Messi Barca wouldn't be the best ever. That's a pretty daft point you've made there.

These pre-season games are pretty much the only rest he gets ... yes, it's unfortunate. He didn't play a few years back when Barcelona took on Hearts at Murrayfield (July 2007) ... 58K of us were a tad disappointed, nevertheless the star of that game wasn't Ronaldinho or Henry but young Bojan Krkic. Ahh well.

Went to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium last March to see them ... very good 1-1 tie. Happy.

I can proudly say I've saw Messi live. Went up to Barcleona last Easter. Only came on in the 2nd half, along with Xavi and Iniesta (was the match before the Classico 2nd leg CL) but still managed to score.

Darn .... that would have been one to remember. You're right of course ... a must ground to visit.

Ive not seen him live, but I did get this close to him outside the Nou Camp about 5 years ago

I have seen Messi live. Argentina got beat 2-1 by Norway, Carew was MotM and Messi got owned for the most of the game by Martin Andresen (). Not one of Messi's finest moments, and tbf it was before he had really become the player he is today.

That HAS to be his dad. 'kin ell! I thought he was looking haggard in the flesh for a second!

he's the bees knees. we're all witnessing a little bit of history atm. plus I really do love the fact that he's not a showboater or one for feigning injury. he just gets back up and gets on with it. and then tears teams apart.
