That pass against Valencia is just unbelieveable. the vision, the execution, brilliant..

Messi is an incredible footballer.

Does that Cal? bloke still think otherwise? I try to avoid these fanboi player threads.

Apart from the attacking options, the Argentina team is really poor compared to other top nations. It will be difficult for them to go all the way regardless of how well Messi plays.
I disagree. Their problem since Maradona retired has been poor team selection and poor mental strength. Their last friendly was an example. The midfield they selected was awful and was by no means the best midfield they could select to support Messi and Aguero upfront. Even though those 2 some how managed pretty well on their own.

I'd agree with you to an extent there. Argentina have an array of attacking talent, and they're defence and midfield is a lot weaker than their attack without doubt, but too many people seem to think that the best strategy is just to pack as many strikers as they can into the first team, which is the wrong approach.

the thing is, pogue, that, no matter what messi does in the future, maradona did it first

he was the first to beat england in a world cup, he was the first to bring the world cup from a foreign country, he was the first to beat brazil in a world cup, and with him as captain, argentina beat italy in italy

plus, he played for argentinos junios, boca and newells

we all want messi to succeed, we want him to do well for argentina, but the comparison to maradona is going to be tough

there's one thing he could do, to shadow maradona

win the world cup in brazil in front of the brazilians fans

if he achieves that, he will surpass maradona, else, he will be regarded as one of the best players ever, but, maradona will still be first in the list
If he does that bolded part. He will be the greatest ever for me. He'd have done Argentina and their fans like myself beyond proud:D

Yes. It's all about balance. If they finally pick the right 11, they'd be nigh unstoppable. But they never seem to be capable of picking it. Yet it's not like they lack it.

I'm not sure if I'd go as far as saying they'd be unstoppable. If they could keep it with their attackers, then possibly, but their defence, and midfield to an extent, is definitely a weak spot for them.

I disagree. They have the perfect midfielders. They just never pick the right ones together, England style.

It's the same with the defence. The defenders are there. Yet they never pick the right ones together. They are not cursed ala Holland with poor defenders. They have a good number of really decent ones.

For me why they'd be nigh unstoppable is because for me they have the best attack on the planet. If they sort out the mess behind that attack, few will live with them.

Yeah, they've got some decent ones no doubt, but I'm not sure if their midfield is so good that it can really dominate. No doubt it can control games against most teams, but compare their midfield to Spain's for instance, and Spain's is still a lot better. I agree with you on most of your other points though.

Remember that friendly when they murderd Spain? That was one of the few games in the last few year that they got selection spot on. On their day Argentine midfielders can pass the ball like few others. Just think back to that goal vs Serbia in 2006:drool:

Right now its selection and mental weakness that cost them. Vs German in 2010 for example, they just crumbled mentally and didn't show up for the match. Germany we the better team. But not 4-0 better. That Argentine side for me was far superior to the English side the Germans beat 4-1.

After the match today:

Tw John Heitinga (Everton): "Mejores jugador del Mundo Messi! Best player in the World! #GrandeMessi #cincogoles" [@johnheitinga]

Tw Eden Hazard (Lille): "Is Messi the best player of all times?" [@hazardeden10] #fcblive

Dutt (coach Leverkusen): "Without Messi, Barcelona are still the best team in the world. But with him, they're from another galaxy" #fcblive

Dutt (coach Leverkusen): "Who has played football, knows there are no words for Messi. He's at his own level." #fcblive

Tw Owen (ManUtd): "Not old enough to see some of the greats but can't believe anyone can have played the game of football as well as Messi."

Tw Falcao (Atletico Madrid): "Was this a CL game or was this Messi in a PlayStation game? Unstoppable!!" #fcblive [@falcao]

Tw Jack Wilshere (Arsenal): "Its a pleasure to watch this guy........MESSI" [@jackwilshere] #fcblive

Tw Wayne Rooney (Man United): "Messi is a joke. For me the best ever." [@waynerooney] #fcblive

Guardiola: "Messi is among the greatest. Di Stefano, Cruyff, Maradona... And I add Pele, otherwise he'll be angry." #fcblive

Lionel Messi: "5 goals? Nice, but the main thing was to qualify." #fcblive

:lol::lol:

Forget about the goals and creative passing, I wanna know the secret of his impeccable technique. The way he runs with the ball, it's something else. That's shoulder feint is by far my favorite move of his, he makes it so simply but creates havoc with it.
Imagine being this relatively great in your local football league, I have to stop dreaming now..

Chris Kamara was talking about him earlier on SSN. He made some very good points when talking about the Maradona comparisons and the people who try to claim that he can't been seen as the greatest until he wins a World Cup.

So, will he ever fancy trying his luck in another country or is he at Barca for life?

Not sure. He could eventually up sticks and end his career in Argentina, but I imagine he'll see the next decade or so out at Barca. He doesn't want him to leave, they won't sell him, and there's no reason for him to leave either.

I'm still struggling to comprehend he's just 24. Can still vividly remember that game at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea mucked up their own pitch and Robben and Del Horno in the corner. Crazy to think that was nearly 7 years ago.

Was Del Horno sent off for hacking Messi? I think I remember that too......7 years ago......damn!

My memory is better than previously though, cheers md! Man, seven years ago.....time really does fly when watching somebody that bloody good.
