33 goals and 15 assists so far this season, would be an incredible achievment if he scored 60 goals till the end of the season

what to expect if Messi gets better in the next years? 70 goals per season?

TBH I'm more worried about the team around him getting that much better. Even with team off color this year he is banging them in left, right and center and creating. If this Barca side gets better. 70 a season won't be beyond him over the next few year if he is fit.

For anyone other than a Barca fan that is a depressing statistic........well I guess its a privilege to watch when its not directly against your own team.

Any player with those kinda stats by the end of a season would be considered to have accomplished a terrific season. We're barely halfway through in Spain

In terms of just stats, its ridiculous how far ahead Messi and Ronaldo are compared to everyone else.

Agreed, it's a possibility. Provided that Messi, Fabregas, Busquets, Sanches, Alcantara, Pedro etc are still realtively young players, they can get even better as a team in the next few years. It's a frightening prospect.

If he stays fit he is gonna smash Barca's all time goalscoring record

at this rate he is going to break their club record in 2-3 years, i.e. at age at which other players haven't peacked yet

Seems unfair at times - how ridiculously good he is. He LITERALLY beats players for fun, which is unheard of.

I'm praying he smashes every record in Spain/Barca/club level and states to the world that he was a boyhood United fan and wants to come to us  ... dreams ey

They've got a ready made replacement for Iniesta in T.Alacantara, while Busquets will take up Xavi's position. Though both obviously don't look like relinquishing their roles just yet.

THM - and apparently I've heard that R Alcantara is much more talented than his brother as well! Can anyone confirm this?

I've heard that as well, but I haven't seen R.Alacantara play so cannot judge. Thiago however is a world class talent, he has the rhythm of a Brazilian even if he has been bought up playing tiki taka.

Agreed on Thiago - hence it is a very scary prospect if his brother is indeed (as talented) or even more talented then him!

The worst part of most of their youth prodigies though - is their attachment to the club. If they leave, they will undoubted jump at the chance to go back to Barca in the near future - but they don't even seem willing to leave!

Barca truly are doing some magical in their youth setup over there.

I'm pretty sure he is like 20 odd goals away from being their all time top scorer. He can actually do it before this season ends. The crazy thing is the goals is not the best part of his game, not in my opinion anyway.

Having a player like him in your team must be an absolute joy for any half decent manager. You just know he will keep 2-3 players busy all the time.

He will beat those 3 players with ease and create shit loads of space for the rest. If by some miracle those players are keeping him "quiet" he can just pick a ridiculous pass out of nowhere that leaves his team mate 1 on 1 with the keeper. Must be an absolute nightmare to play against

You think so? I don't think Busquets will change at all position wise, and I expect Iniesta to be the one who replaces Xavi in his midfield general position.

He could actually break the overall record this season if he stays fit, he's only 22 goals behind Cesar.

Still 47 behind in la liga though, Messi would have to reach unprecedented levels to break that this season!

Can't see it, but I'd really like to see him in the Premier League. I mean, he is on his way to become Barca's best goalscorer of all-time* and he's not even 25 yet, has won virtually every trophy there is to win with the club.

1. César Rodríguez, 195 gols en 287 partits
2. Lionel Messi, 138 gols en 195 partits
3. Ladislau Kubala, 131 gols en 186 partits
4. Samuel Eto'o, 108 gols en 145 partits
5. Marià Martín, 97 gols en 112 partits
6. Patrick Kluivert, 90 gols en 182 partits
7. Estanislau Basora, 89 gols en 237 partits
8. Josep Escolà, 86 gols en 152 partits
9. Rivaldo, 86 gols en 157 partits
10. Hristo Stòitxkov, 83 gols en 175 partits
Should be the right list, although I'm not too sure, if this year's goals are already included.

:( I'm shattered ssomeone I'll never see thinks I'm pathetic, how will I live with myself?

When someone replies with something like this, you know that they're actually hurting.

I'll be suprised if adexkola is still alive tomorrow.

That's the la liga only list, Messi is 20 or so behind in the overall list.

Virtually?

Which one hasn't he won? Europa League?

It's just ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous to have such stats.

It's also truly frightening just how much of Barcelona's end product comes through him. He's well on his way to becoming their best ever player with time to spare. Making history just seems easy for him.

Another week, another amazing goal.

It's gotten to a point where I can't help but think that old timers who say Maradona was better than him must be exaggerating as I don't know just how can any player in any era surpass what Messi is doing right now.

Didn't see Maradona at all but it's hard to see or imagine anyone being better than Messi right now.

Not seen Maradona at all? Or didn't ever see him while active, let alone a full match?

At any rate, his passing is one area that he exceeded Messi in:

Plenty of pundits including Gerry Armstrong who really knows his stuff believe he is even better than Maradona

Just seen all his goals today. Simply incredible

Spanish commentary is terrible....every week it's a Messi blowathon. "best ever" "better than maradona" are like every other sentence. Give me Andy Gray over this.

I don't get how some people can directly compare players from different era's. They are from different generations, the games changed massively since the days of Pele and co and it'll be near impossible to actually say who is the greatest of all time. All we can base these players on is their goal records (which again is affected by different a kind of football in a said generation). But this doesn't annoy me anywhere as near as people saying who were born after the Pele, Maradonna and co days saying that, for example, Pele is the greatest footballer. You have never fecking watched him play!

To this day Ronaldo (Brazilian) is the greatest footballer I've ever watched but Messi is someone else who you can't help but be in awe of at times.

The more I see him, more I think he could do it on a rainy Monday night against Stoke.
