Messi: "I never scored in England? Really? Let me think... Yeah, you're right. Never thought about it, must be coincidence." (via @manutdstuff)

I am certain that Messi will be lifting the next world cup in Brazil. Even though he has done nothing for his national team to date, I just get that feeling that it will be his destiny and playing in Brazil will almost be like playing at home for him. He will be up for it along with the incredible young players coming through the ranks in Argentina now such as Pastore, Iturbe, Aguerro etc

I'm not really sure Iturbe belongs in that group.

Barcelona are quite good at nurturing players back into fitness following summer tournaments. Their Spanish internationalists for example have had tournaments every summer since 2008, yet have shown little signs of fatigue or declining performances. The Copa is quite late so they should be looking to ensure Messi doesn't get back into club football before September I'd say.

Spain will likely still be the worlds best team in 4 years.

I don't know if you've noticed, but all bar Xavi have had longer stints on the sideline at some point over the last 3 years for that team.

Gulp.

Messi on which United players would settle-in at Barcelona:

"Hernandez could fit us. He speaks Spanish and has a great style. It is difficult to predict what he does in a fight next, and that's what we see as a strength of our team. Wayne Rooney could also be possible. He has been playing at the highest level of recent years – I am sure that his style in no time he could adapt to the Spanish conditions."

Depends how the majority of the big guns hold up. Xavi and perhaps Puyol are the only ones who might call it a day, the others are still at a good age to win one more major tournament.

Well this is the first season that Puyol's missed a chunk of games. Iniesta has always been fragile but even in the last three years has averaged 40-50 games a year. David Villa has barely missed a game during the last decade. Xavi continues to average 50-60 games a season. All in all, they're in pretty good condition considering the propensity for post-tournament hangovers.

Fantastic player.

Who's better, him or Best at his best?

No idea, Best for me let himself down too much. As a player he very well could have been the greatest but his lack of dicaplne and lifestyle ended his chances of that status for me. Messi is still 23 so it could go wrong for him but his personality and mentality seem to be very much professional which makes you think his career will continue as it is going now.

I don't know how much of that is true, especially since Messi has always been a shy lad and it is goal.com but I do remember a story of him having to be persuaded to train after being taken off early once, after having a poor game.

Maybe it was that Sevilla game mentioned.

I hope he doesn't fall by the wayside due to the money and fame and reputation of being one of the greatest of all time, because he gives off the impression as being an exception to the rule.

I doubt fans of football want to see the Argentine do a Ronaldinho.

If this is true, dude needs to remember where he came from, the humble streets of Rosario and not let his ego spiral out of control.

Well maybe not at his age but Paul Scholes would fecking rape the Spanish league for fun. He'd slot into the Barca team and do what they do with consummate ease, probably even better. And he'd be widely regarded as one of the all time great midfielders of the game. They appreciate that sort of player more in Spain. And of course that sort of midfielder gets a better platform because the game is centered around that kind of play.

But then again, Scholes is so good he's been one of the best midfielders even England has ever seen. That for me is the definition of the word complete. Could bust a gut and score goals for fun. Could playmake as good as anyone.

Yeah, I just went on a tangent!

I don't think it's a question of a new found ego problem. I think it's another aspect of the obsession that helps build a great player. Messi's always needed time to brood and work things through off the field, and provide he comes back "fixed" - his bosses/teammates leave him to it.

People (who read Spanish!) who are curious about the background to the goal.com story should take a look at Messi, el niño del campeón · ELPAÍS.com

some of you must think argentina is a lot worse or poor that it really is

rosario is the third of fourth city of argentina

LMAO

but isn't he from the streets, the hood?

teehee

not really, the thing is that he needed those hormones during the worst economic crisis in argentina, so he had to leave to barcelona because it was much of a gamble for argentinian teams to pay for that

but messi didn't come from a much humble family

unlike maradona

ArgentinaFW Online poll in Argentina: Who would you prefer in the Seleccion, Messi or Tevez? Currently Tevez 64.72%, Messi 35.28%

When I tell the story of Lionel Messi when he's hung up his boots, do you mind if I say he didn't have a pot to piss in?

That he used to walk the streets of Rosario searching for a pot and found nothing?

Everyday was the same sad walk....every day produced the same result.

I think it would make the legend better.

well, Tevez played for one of the most popular teams in argentina, so there's no surprise there

you can say he used to be a girl and that the hormones changed his sex

and that before the treatment he looked like this:

Interesting. I thought Tevez was horrendous in qualifying for the World Cup.

Pep should let him play. In the season Ronaldo won WPOTY - I used to say big reason for me choosing Ronaldo over Messi given the choice was Ronaldo because of how seldom Ronaldo got injured but, Messi seemed fragile. Since then though Messi has been quite sturdy. Let him play a half to try get his tally up - will make him happy and Pep can deal with more important issues such as how he's going to stop United ...

I was thinking more of

'Lionel would roam the streets everyday looking for a pot to piss in.

Nobody could quite understand what was going through his troubled head as his parents would plead with him that the house had plenty of bathrooms.

but every day, same walk, same result, same Messi.....'

a real tear jerker.

Fantastic player.

Who's better, him or Best at his best?

Speaking to paddy crerand, Peter shilton, alex stepney and Wilf mcguinness last week. Asked that very question. Messi they all said is brilliant. But if Bestie played today on those surfaces with the sort of protection messi gets he would be the one. All that close control, goal scoring and dribbling ability we so admire in messi was on display when best took the field. Cept he did it often on pitches that looked like mud baths with defenders hacking him to pieces.

I never saw Best play in person but I'll accept the judgment of those that did
