Lionel Messi

Made some dazzling runs like usual but he didn't play well to his extremely high standards. Still scored a goal though, stops that silly stat about not scoring against a Mourihno team.

He's been pretty off color over the last 2 months or so. Too many passes going astray and running into defenders. I think he could have touched 55 goals by now if he'd maintained his form of pre CL 1st knock out round.

He's a phenomenon.

His talent is a once-in-a generation type talent, but the productivity he gets out of that talent is absolutely incredible. For the gifts he's blessed with, it pretty much shows how hard he has worked in training to bring his goalscoring and finishing up to another level. We should be proud to say we're seeing Messi during his peak.

If it even is that... what if he gets his better years towards his late twenties?

If he does continue to step up, it essentially won't be fair to other teams.

I'm not sure if it can get much better than this. I'll be happy enough if he keeps this level for a good number of years and doesn't do a Ronaldinho...

More than this I reckon is almost impossible. He also benefits a lot of the superb team he's in and that one won't improve mcuh beyond this as well.

I think those who refuse to acknowlede he's up there with the greatest ever are starting to look very foolish

He could retire tomorrow and be remembered as an all time legend and phenomenon

A Messi inspired World Cup win on Brazilian soil would nip any last doubts in the bud...

In my book he's one of he best ever already but lets see if he can win copa america on his own soil before we get ahead of ourselves for brazil 14.

Well... playmaking-wise he's no-where near Maradona's range and consistency, so there's always that to aim for ;)

I wouldn't dare dream of that, and I agree he's at a ridiculous plateau as it is.

You're rarely this right in thinking you're seeing insane talent that'll no doubt make it as we've all been since Messi broke into the Barca squad in 2004-05.

As Arda Turan said when he replied to the question who the better player is between Ronaldo and Messi:

"In the world I would say Ronaldo. Messi is from another planet."

Not that I want to spark another Ronaldo vs Messi fight, I just found it a nice way of him getting his point across. ;)

Great answer, from another planet doesn't necessarily mean better. ;)

50 goals ..... What can be said ?

La Liga is no better then the Scottish Premier League in terms of division of talent? Top player, best in the world 'pips Xabi', the lack of quality defending 'does it even exist' in Spain overrate just how good he and Ronaldo are. You can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't be scoring 45+ goals a season each 10 years ago!

Domestically he's amazing but he's not really transferred that to the International stage. He needs to lead Argentina to a WC like Maradonna did in '86.

You can't argue with his stats, but for me, I enjoyed watching Ronaldinho in his prime more - by this I mean I would actively watch Barca for Ronaldinho a few years back, whereas now, Messi just doesn't draw me in the same way.

I'm sure Messi cannot sleep over this development, but it's true.

I agree. Ronaldinho was glorious to watch, he just took the piss.

Yeah I'd go with that too. That goal v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was simply amazing. And that one v Lyon I think in the 05/06 CL (Semi's wasn't it? It might have been v Milan)

I agree... and I'll add that he's no Diego, either... To take the piss like he did for a not-so-big club in Italy during it's harshest most defensive period in modern times is incredible. Messi's more brute force than playmaking their side to bits.

bla bla bla
The same shit is being repeated each time but the PL is not much better in terms of defending. The way this league gets overrated is ridiculous.
I guess the CL is the level where players can be accurately judged and for his age, his goal tally is amazing right now never mind what he might achieve in the future

Not traditional giants of Italian football, but lets not forget they paid a World record fee to sign him, and other very good players too

Messi is at a bigger and better club, but what he's doing is still phenomenol

Never won Serie A without his help, neither before nor since... Not to mention the UEFA Cup. It was so clearly him that edged them into a chance at winning trophies at that time.

Obviously Messi's still phenomenal, but he can't raise a team from challenging to winning on his own, not in the top competitions... Maradona more or less did...

No the CL can't be, otherwise in that case, Ruud would have walked the wpoty for 3+ seasons given his incredible goal count for us.... There is no proper way to gauge Messi apart from his exploits with Argentina because he's never played in another league. You think goals against Arsenal mean much, just take a look at them and tell me that you think they're the best defending team the PL can offer! Without their midfield protecting their defenders, they'd be lucky to be in the top 10 defending sides in the PL!

The premier league is overrated, but La Liga is drastically overrated. Take a look at the flippin league table and tell me that there is any form of competitiveness. Every team in the premier league is capable on any given day, able to beat the top side which happens to be the most competitive side in Europe based on the Uefa stats.

Hell, you don't even have to do that, go and watch a replay of the Madrid match last night and tell me that they have quality defenses given they 'Valencia' are the third best side in that league!

The likes of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane and Rivaldo would be just as good as Messi and Ronaldo in current state La Liga in their pomps!

He didn't though, thats the point. No one ever has or ever will in an 11 man team sport

It's incredible to me how much Barca miss him when he doesn't play, despite the other quality they have

This lazy way of looking at Maradona's career should stop. It's a great disservice to many of his team mates. I suspect if football then was covered the way it is now, such claims would be more widely rubished

He's amazing, absolutely amazing. Funnily enough that finish against Arsenal still sticks out for me despite all the amazing things he's done. Many others had they tried what he did would have messed up what was a tough skill and got flak for it. He had the guts to try it and pull it off. Awesome.

However I still think Zidane is the best player I've seen. The international stage will be the ultimate hurdle for Messi to cross. But so far, so incredible.

I never watched Platini or Maradona or Pele or whoever else but I can tell you this, Messi is the best player I've watched in my time.
