Lionel Messi

His dribbling style is what exactly the sort of stuff that I love to watch. He makes it look simple and even at times it's predictable, he doesn't resort to step overs or anything that flashy.Sometimes you can even guess where he'll go but it's just so hard to stop him

Can I admit something here?

Messi doesn't excite me.

There, I said it. Let the ridicule begin.

Can i ask you something here?

If you dont enjoy watching someone like Lionel Messi then who exactly do you enjoy watching? and what is it about them that you find pleasing on the eye?

I'm baffled... Messis a pure joy to watch. Against Valencia he was rediculously good.

The irony there is I love David Silva. But I've always preferred guys like Scholes and Pirlo, Xavi... I guess I just enjoy a different sort of player.

Like I said, he's clearly not a bad player. No one's stupid enough to say that. I'd just be more interested in seeing how guys like Xavi and Iniesta play if I sit down and watch Barca. Each to their own, and all that.

The defending for a couple of those goals was just absolutely woeful. I understand that Spanish teams are renowned for their attacking play, but surely defenders can't look at themselves with any real sense of purpose.

The whole, "settling in" line that Frankly is taking is a load of tripe. Ibra has moved from an defensively strong league, to one that is far more open where his technical skills should almost be shown as a master class week in and week out. He's not short of pace and he doesn't lack fineese, so what is it?

I really don't want to take credit away from Messi, Ronaldo and other attackers, but the defending I have seen at times has been atrocious, laughable at times. Defenders will make errors against the best, but it happens every game.

Maybe because defenders are made to look stupid every game. Whenever a player scores a good goal the defending can always come into question. But then that's what good players do.

That hat trick was staggeringly good. It's almost depressing, he makes it look so simple but you know you'll never be able to do that on a football pitch.

I find it hard to believe any football fan cannot enjoy watching a player like Messi.

You could analyse almost all goals and question the defending, because if the defending was perfect the other team would never have scored.

The best players force defenders into making errors. However in La Liga, I see fundamental mistakes being made every match. It's safe to say such errors are less common in the Premier League. I'm not knocking La Liga, I think it's more of a spectacle, but the standard of defending is low. How many world class defenders are in La Liga, in opposition to Seria A and the Premier League?

On current form:

England: Vidic, Evra, Cole.

Italy: Maicon, Lucio, Nesta

Spain: Pique, Puyol, Alves (all at a stretch really)

Carvalho, Ferdinand and Terry are normally world class but certainly haven't been this season.

World football in general has a distinct lack of great defenders right now. Compare that to ten years ago when you had Nesta, Cannavaro, Lucio, Desailly, Blanc, Maldini, Lizarazu, Thuram, Costacurta, Stam, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Hierro, Lebouf, Frank De Boer, Kohler, Sol Campbell, Ayala and probably others I've forgotten. Definitely there's a lack of good defenders around right now.

I love the way Silva plays but you've got a screw loose if you cant see what Messi is all about. He's the best player in the world and the reason for that is that he does everything Xavi and Iniesta do but also with the added ability to be cutting edge and make the real difference.

That's the reason i love he way he plays, he does everything. Keep it simple, plays possession football, picks passes, relieves pressure, works hard, nicks the ball from opposition players but has that extra something to get the goals or to open a team up that no other player does. Or other players do but not with the frequency or in the mannor in which Messi does it.

Looking for another argument?

Not really, just giving my opinion. There's always a case for other players but based on last season and this season i don't see anyone at a higher level.

Don't you watch the Premier League?

Rooney this season is better than Messi.

He's been sensational for sure but then Messi is one goal short of his total league total of goals last season... a season in which he was undoubtably the best.

Rooney has raised his game, he is for now on the level of Ronaldo and Messi, but ROnaldo and Messi have sustained this level. If Rooney does that, maintains his level for a long period of time he'll then be in and around the best.

So because Messi is close to repeating what he managed last season, when he was the best; no one can be better even if they do more?

Rooney this season is the Messi of last season, the big break through season where everyone can see he belongs as one of the best.

Before you get started, Messi before last season was not on par with Ronaldo. It isn't even debatable.

So is Messi and Ronaldo in and around the best now? :D

Hmm... 2 seasons samples now.

Ronaldo 07/08+08/09 is better than Messi during the same period.

It's what he said. You chose to ignore a part of FV's post.
Btw Messi of 08/09 and 09/10 is better than Ronaldo during the same period.Messi is also younger than both Rooney and C.Ronaldo so it's even more impressive

Why do you consider when deciding who is better that goals and goals only, determines who is better.

Messi does so many more good things in a match compared to Rooney and Ronaldo.

Right now on current form, Rooney arguably pips everybody

We don't have to merge three seasons, 2 seasons, or 3.25 seasons to suit our arguments. It is agreed though, that Rooney needs to maintain similar level of performances to be considered on par with Ronaldo and Messi, but as of now, taking current form, our man is doing awesome :D

Messi is the better player ignoring goals.

Well, you can even say Modric is better than both, but you should go with the way how people rate individuals in a team game.

I'm not saying Rooney is more talented than Messi, but on current form, he's the one to be in my team first. The key here is current form.

But he is less Modric than Modric, and thus is an inferior player

In fairness, there is nothing wrong with saying Messi is better than Rooney, even this year, that said I don't really see much in it, both sides have more than fair arguments.

I personally think Rooney offers more than Messi, he isn't just hugging the touch line and waiting for someone to pass the ball to him so he can run at defenses. He offers much in terms of tracking back, and plays with the team and a competent tackler.

I'm sure others can disagree.

I'll disagree here in the sense that Messi does not just hug the touchline. Whilst that's certainly the main position he takes up, he also wanders through the middle, dictating the flow of the game. He's the ultimate playmaker in that sense in that he can do damage from anywhere on the field. I'm not old enough to have seen Cruyff, but I'm fairly sure i'm not wrong in saying that he was well known for that.

Okay, conclusion:

07/08+08/09, Ronaldo is better
08/09+09/10, Messi is better
09/10 alone, Rooney is better
