Lionel Messi

in every department he's been superior. Chance conversion, chances created, pass completion etc etc, the stats unequivocally back him up and now that the old "cant score against english" "big game bottler" tags hold no bearing i think everyone should be in no doubt.

No one is arguing Messi has had the better season, and he even got the "icing on the cake" 2nd last night.

Deserves whichever accolade he gets for an amazing season with Barca.

Still don't think he's as good as Ronaldo overall.

no doubt he deserves it, Ronaldo deserved it last year and Messi deserves it this year.

Ronaldo had a couple of decent runs where he was fouled, apart from that he was trying to do too much, shot too many times from distance and then went into his "i'm a twat" mode for the last half hour. He was by no means the worst, he was actually one of uniteds better players but still woefully short of what is expected.

I thought Ronaldo was by far United's best player last night, he was the only one who seemed to care.

Our performance went from bad to worse with the introduction of Tevez and Berbatov.

That's the most important thing don't you think ? He has done better this season and he will be crowned best player . It's about having better seasons than others

Yes, that's why I said he would deserve every accolade he picks up.

i couldnt pick out anyone as "by far uniteds best player" from last night.

If you didn't have a personal vendetta against Cristiano, you'd see he put in a performance worthy of a World footballer of the Year.

Pity his teammates didn't put in performances worthy of being champions of Europe/the world. :(

If Ronaldo wasn't your favourite player ever you might understand that in a game he wasnt at his best. Yes he did keep trying and he may well have looked like the only united player with any sense of belief/confidence which i commend him for but in terms of football he was wasteful.

Wasteful? Don't get me started on how Rooney, Carrick and co messed up so many final balls.

Anyway, I'm not in the mood to argue about it today.

i never said he was the worst, i thoguht Rooney and Carrick were truely awful. Rooneys head went down and Carrick had no one to pop it off too and his long passes were all at sea, his worst performance in a long while...

Ronaldo was wasteful though, he hit about 6 or 7 of uniteds 9 or 10 shots. That is wasteful if you dont score one. Messi hit two shots and scored one.

That's just the difference in style. Barca are like a better version of Arsenal, pass, pass, pass and pass some more before they even think about shooting.

United are a lot more direct. I can only think of one when Ronaldo scuffed with shot with his left foot that maybe he should have passed.

This is all pretty silly to go wow Messi is incredible when really Iniesta had more threat in this game (though Messi to be fair won a fair few free kicks where he may have been able do more otherwise BUT Iniesta also won a few). His goal was far more due to the brilliance of Xavi (what a perfectly weighted ball) combined with defensive error to leave him enough space to head the ball cleanly than his skill, and the other one was all about E'too and defensive mistakes and laziness.
He had one normal shot from long range readily saved.
He made himself a target to have no space being who he is and when he did space he didnt do anything incredible just played for the team (credit for that though)

So because Iniesta was awesome, Messi wasnt?

They were all awesome last night.

Sir Alex has reopened the debate:

United manager paid a glowing tribute to the Portuguese forward. "Cristiano is a massive loss," Ferguson told PA Sport.
"I have nothing but praise for the boy. He is easily the best player in the world. He is better than Kaka and better than Messi. He is streets ahead of them all.

"His contribution as a goal threat is unbelievable. His stats are incredible. Strikes at goal, attempts on goal, raids into the penalty box, headers. It is all there. Absolutely astounding."

FV, what did you say about Sir Alex only praising him because he plays for United?

Seems Sir Alex still holds the same opinion now he doesn't...

Ronaldo isnt as good as Messi, forget about being streets ahead of Kaka. Its sad you keep banging on the same argument that has been done to death through out the thread with the relative performance of these players presenting a better evidence.

Clearly Sir Alex knows nothing about players... :o

Messi had a better 08/09, but overall, Ronaldo is the better player.

Even when Messi was struggling with injuries in the season before the last, he was always better than Ronaldo ...whenever he was match fit, it was always been the case from 2005. From 2006-2008 an injury free Ronaldo was only statistically better than an injury prone Messi not cerntainly a better footballer.

Last season, Messi was predominantly fit, now he also has the stat to back up his consistency.

Fergie's just bigging ronaldo up so much that if he fails to out-do Kaka and Messi next season, Ronnie will have failed, and once Ronnie realises how shit the Madrid fans are, he might want to come back somewhere down the line as he's left the door open.

Absolutely true, I personally think that Ronaldo is the more complete player but last season he was much better than Ronaldo from start to finish

Messi is the greatest player of this generation but I don't know why for people to say this they usually have to put down Ronaldo, you would think the diminutive Argentine had done enough to be mentioned on his own. Strange that one

He's a smart lad SAF, leaving the door open for a return if Ronaldo ever wants to come back, nothing more than that.

I mean, to say he is "streets ahead of them all" is a joke that even the most ardent Ronaldo fan could find a little over the top.

Fergie has a really strange relationship with Ronaldo, a relationship i've never seen him have with another player. I thought his relationship with Keane was about as good a player/manager relationship he'd ever have but with Ronaldo it's a real father son thing.

Maybe Sir Alex really does think Ronaldo is that good, he is entitled to his opinion.

Bigging up as the best, a player everyone knows he had a large part in moulding. A player he obviously loves (despite some of his actions) and someone who has been great for his club on the field and now financially. Of course he would say that. Don't be deliberately obtuse.

I personally thought Messi dropped at the closing end of the season and was suffering a bit. Even in the CL final despite scoring. But it was what he had done from September to Jan (and a similar period the year before) that demonstrated to me that he was clearly out on his own as a footballer. He has that touch of magic that I've only seen in 2 or 3 players. Big Ronaldo was the last to have it.

I'm happy Messi finally gets the recognition he deserves, When I first saw him play in that youth tournament I knew he was going to be the best because I had never seen anything like it. The way he attacks space and beat you, or deliver amazing passes at the same time is something almost new to this generation.

He's only 22 as well, what is going to happen in the next few seasons can be just scary, I just hope that the play still evolves around him when Zlatan comes because there is nobody better than young Leo.

All the "I hope" and "I'm happy" worries me from a United fan.

Personally I don't think Fergie rates Messi that high, I don't know why. Didnt he say he does nothing that makes him jump out of his seat or was it Kaka?

It was Kaka he was talking about. If i'm not mistaken he holds Messi in high regard. Surprisingly

You are mistaken. He was just as close with Beckham till Beckham married Posh.

But Beckham never wanted to leave the club and Beckham for as good for United as he was is and was no Ronaldo.

Messi's obviously the best in the business based on the season that's just past. It's ridiculous how involved he was in everything Barcelona did last year.

He was the main man in one of the best teams you're ever likely to see. Xavi had an unbelievable first half of the season, and Iniesta really set the world alight in the last few months of the season, but Messi was consistently integral throughout its entirity. He's fecking amazing.

From pre-season all the way through to the last game against us, he set the world on fire. He is finally getting the true recognition he deserves. He created, destroyed teams with his dribbling and passing and never shyed away from defensive duties where the entire team did well.

People say he didn't play well against Chelsea but you know you are gifted when a team that beats Arsenal 4-1 away from home has to put everybody behind the ball just to stop you. He still has the composure to pick out Iniesta in the 2nd leg. How funny was it when Boswinga was claiming all the praise for stifling Messi during the 1st leg?

Messi wasn't the problem against us. He wasn't against Chelsea either.

Both us and Chelsea suffered at the hands of Iniesta, who outshined Messi during the end of the season. It was Barca's midfield and tactics that won them the game, we threw it away.

Messi was not the greatest against us but his role can not be understated. He played centrally adding a forth person to midfield which allowed for them to dominate at what they do best which is passing the ball just like they did against Real Madrid during their emphatic victory.

In the final he played what can be described as the 'perfect game', he dribbled only when he had to, passed when he had to and added that much needed balance to the attack by hardly giving the ball away. He was not focused on winning it on his own because the team objective was in his mind for that. He did everything he needed to do and it paid off.

Played well, but didn't shine as I said.

I was talking relationships. Nothing else really.

They matter a great deal.

If Beckham had said he wanted to leave regadless of Posh he would have left because Fergie knew he was replacable.

SAF knew that he couldnt replace Ronaldo so kept him buttered up and did everything in his power to keep him at the club, something he's done for no player before.

The only reason Ronaldo stayed this season was Sir Alex.

Ronaldo vs Messi Vs Kaka will be settled once and for all in the next few years in La Liga. I can hardly wait for the battle royale to commence.

The talent in spain will be out of this world next season. Certainly the one to watch, it must kill the anti la liga brigade on here that so many world class players will be strutting their stuff in spain.

You can add Ibrahimovic to that list as soon as he signs.

My money remains on Messi, only injury can stop that lad.

I personally think Messi was shit against Chelsea (yes despite his "assist" to Iniesta) and again not great in the final.
He was really shit against Chelsea mind you

Neither of the top teams improved their defences though:angel:

Yes it will. Must be great for the anti-EPL brigade.

Shame the way the talent has moved though, no qualms about Ibra, but it feels like Real have stolen the talent from the EPL and Serie A. Serie A was weak enough as it was, it didn't need a talent exodus.

I think Madrid brought in a Valencia defender and Barcelona's defence is one of the best in the world regardless of popular belief. Pique was probally one of the best defenders in europe last season and I'm happy for the lad that he has managed to do so well for himself.
