Lionel Messi \ Signs for PSG

I see. So it's not a real football club that isn't the fruit of the merger from a football club and the fact that businessmen were involved at some p

I see. I typically disagree with that idea, a club that comes from amateur football and hasn't been created literally yesterday is for me a real club. I don't really suscribe to the idea of plastic clubs, I find it a bit crass. I also obviously disagree with any idea that involvement of businessmen in the history of a club is a problem because almost none of the top clubs have been developed without businessmen and crucial funding from them whether it happend 70 years or 10 years ago.
Fair enough, I'd probably feel the same if I supported one too.

Being developed by business people is a whole lot different to being founded by them

Sucks that he's going to PSG. It's the most boring destination possible.
It’s ideal IMO

If it wasn’t them it would have been city, so I am delighted he is off to PSG

At first I was kinda happy that the spanish clubs domination on Europe is no more.

But then PSG is the team that signs Messi. Football is ruined boys. FFP = Fossil, Fuel and Petroleum.

Plot twist:

Ronaldo had his eye on PSG, now Messi is there that is out of the question as he won't be main man there.

He could return to Madrid but that chapter is closed. He won't want to ruin it.

His last realistic option is coming back to England......He only has eyes for United and joins as he thinks we can compete for the title again. Him and Cavani are our strikers next year and we win the Prem.

What about what Messi wants? I remember Ferdinand being asked in a interview a few years ago, that if he was a footballer now and could choose any club he'd choose PSG because they have Neymar and Mbappe.

True. But then you get players like Varane that want to play in the best leagues. I think Messi would've gone to City if he could as well but they decided at this point it wasn't financially viable.

Please, please, please stop suggesting Messi should just reduce his salary, of even play for free. Laporta just now on the press conference:

They need to offload Coutinho, Umtiti, Roberto and other deadweight, or else they cant register their new signings. This is not about Messi and his salary. They cant even sign him if he offered to play for free.

The whole thing just shows how much of a mess Barce are in, I mean if it’s this bad why didn't they sell him to City last summer for 100m when he basically put a transfer request in? A huge fee received plus 60m saved on wages.

Instead he leaves for free and they sign Memphis and Aguero on huge contracts…..fecking rubbish business they still don’t seem to be learning anything.

Hard not to tear up seeing Messi so distraught at the end of that press conference. Also hard not to feel negative about the future of football as I love it. fecking oil clubs can fecking feck off.

Never said he can't make his own decision. Just think it's a shame. Could have really been exciting to see him competing in Serie A or something.

Yeah, you want him to be Ronaldo. He gets a decent shot at the CL something he wouldn't at Inter, gets paid loads of cash, gets to play with former team mates Neymar and Di Maria, gets to play with Mpabbe and can live in Paris. It's a good choice considering his age.

I don't support a club that would be described as a plastic club but I still find it a bit crass because it ignores how many older clubs have been created or have been saved by businessmen who put lots of money into them, Manchester United being an example.
And PSG wasn't founded just by businessmen, the club is the fruit of a merger. On one side you have the Paris FC which was founded by businessmen and on the other side you have the stade saint germanois.

True. But then you get players like Varane that want to play in the best leagues. I think Messi would've gone to City if he could as well but they decided at this point it wasn't financially viable.

Varane is still in his prime and wanted a pay raise amongst other things. Obviously as a United fan, I love to see him here and respect him going to the prem. I frankly don't know what City's interest in Messi was at this point in time.

PSG ...?
Real chances champions league
In Paris almost all the players speak Spanish
90% player's wifes choose Paris ...
There is a great tradition of Argentinian immigration to Paris ....

This doesn't make any sense.

It does, because there has to he a national minimum wage level.

Also, I think there will be a clause somewhere that footballers have to be paid.

If an 17yr old can be on 20k a week without playing for first team at chelsea, Messi is deffiently not going to be paid 1 euro.

Success shouldn't be dependent on how many fans you have.

If you bring through youth, are very prudent with transfers, you deserve a shot at glory without being asset stripped by big clubs.

Here in the states, big teams like the Knicks and Cowboys have not been able to win for decades because of stupid management, while small teams win all the time. I get the different dynamics of the sports and markets and what not but that is what sport should be about. It shouldn't be about traditional big clubs having a virtual oligopoly. It shouldn't be about oil clubs buying their way to the top. My issue is that many fans close their eye to one issue (because they benefit from it) while attacking the other. If both can't fall let both stand then, is my stance

Very good Post.

Pep said they thought he was staying at Barca so bought Grealish instead so they couldn't do the deal. Varane had a big offer from PSG.

The way people are talking about Messi being unable to be registered, he can't play either.

I personally think they'll sort something out and he'll play. I suspect this "Messi can't be re-signed" is just spin to save face.

I guess we'll see. If Memphis or Aguero play for Barca then we'll know this wall all horseshit.

Yeah, this is the thing for me. If I'm understanding it all correctly, Messi can't stay because their wage bill is out of control at 95% (and that's without him on there) and it needs to be at 70%, hence why they can't register players. But then how do Aguero and Depay work? It's either I'm not understanding it properly, or there's something else going on.

Common sense posts in a tide of hysterical hyperbole.

I think they were hoping to sell some players, Dembele for one but he's injured. If you're a buying club then you might fancy waiting until late on in the window when Barca's arse is really against the wall. With each passing day they get more and more desperate.

Tears for leaving Barcelona are real. Thats is my opinion. It is always emotional leaving something where you have been for 20+ years and where you have meant so much.

But I can't relly feel to sorry for him because he can play there without getting tons of money. He already have money so if he loved Barcelona that much, he could stay and almost play for "free". Should he choose and sign for PSG, it only shows that this is done for the money. Nothing else.

Messi lands on Paris soil, crying.
"Why art thou in tears mine child?" Pochettino asks
Messi : "It's so beautiful, I will play under the best manager on the galaxy"
Pochettino : "Who told thee? thou must need a strong heart, mine child"
Messi : "He is a legend... his name, Amadeus, he is on RedCafe"
Pochettino : "err... thats my mom"

Pep said they thought he was staying at Barca so bought Grealish instead so they couldn't do the deal. Varane had a big offer from PSG.

And fair play for Varane for that, but he's still in his prime. If City couldn't do the deal what would have been the best option for Messi? Considering his age and that he wants to be paid befitting his stature and probably wants another shot at the CL before he retires? Chelsea?

Exactly.

If others can be registered so can Messi.

I think he would've gone to City. Last season that was where he wanted to go and play for Pep. I agree though, if he wants big money and a shot at the CL, in the absence of City then PSG is the only option.

At the moment neither of these players are registered same with Garcia and Emerson. They need to generate cash and wage room.

Edit: If I'm not mistaken they can register some of them but not all.

My point is that this should be a bit of an exception because the employer in this case has always done everything to keep him happy. The Martino hiring, getting rid of Ibra when they fell out, huge contracts as demanded are a few things that come to mind. I guess we'll never know but I would like to think that a Giggs or a Scholes would have done everything possible to stay including playing for free if United were in Barca's place (god forbid).
Scholes and Giggs will not play for free if United is put in Barca's position. Fans are so gullible and driven by emotions they'll believe and say anything, specially when it comes to putting their own heroes on a pedestal.

That seems to have been their M.O. for the last few years. Just "hope" things work out while sort of ignoring it. It's so difficult to move these players on, as they've demonstrated, yet they continue to operate as if they're no longer an issue.

It's just baffling that they signed four players (i think) this summer, knowing full well what was happening to them. I just don't know how Aguero and Depay are officially registered (if they are??) during all this.

He should stay and play for 'free' whilst the other lesser players surrounding him get paid hundreds of thousands per week? How long do you reckon that rosy scenario would last?

Ok, thanks. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. What a crazy situation to get yourself into. Yet you STILL go on and sign four players this summer!
So feasibly they could play next season without Aguero, Depay, and Messi (well certainly without Messi). And those players will just be left in limbo? Unless they can sell some of their big guns.

Crazy

Dafaq you talking about? This isn’t his hobby to play for free. It’s his job. It’s prolly the last big contract he will earn. Just cause people have money doesn’t mean they won’t want more or need more. He wants his family looked after for the rest of his life and rightfully so.

You can’t blame anyone but Barca for this. The transfer fees they have paid and the contracts they have giving out these past few years are mind boggling and have come back to bite them in their ass.

A lot posters here are utterly delusional.

There is absolutely nothing to base this on besides your own fan fiction and using said fan fiction as a stick to beat Messi with
Of course. Like I said we'll never know and what I said was based on utopia. I'm just thinking that if I had so much money that I didn't know what to do with it and was going to continue getting paid millions from sponsorship deals or another source, I would definitely 'consider' working free for an employer if I loved them so much and didn't want them to go under.

Someone else said that I don't know how elitist footballers think and that's probably true. The Giggs and Scholes thing were just examples and I would like to think that but of course there is nothing to base this on except hoping that a player would stick by the club in a time like this specially if the club was in some serious trouble (albeit one that they themselves are responsible for in this case).

Did Messi wipe those tears with straight cold cash from the reported £123 million per year he earned on his last deal? I mean it’s sad for football generally, but his wages were absolutely bonkers.

Come on, that cannot be serious?

It was but not really transcripted accurately, he said " We say that we have a s**t league" as in "some people say we have a sh**t league". The rest is true though, I personnally find it nice to see coaches speaking honestly about loving the game, enjoying watching players etc. Some teams in ligue 1 aren't huge football cities, you can understand that the idea of seeing a legend like Messi on the pitch turns them on a bit.
