Lionel Messi \ Signs for PSG

It doesn't matter if you are GOAT or average. If a club is in financial problems, every player need to make some sacrifice if they want to play for the club. So if you are Messi or Pedri. Paycut is solution.

This whole problem is because football has become bigger then what they can manage in terms of money. Barcelona is not the first club and certanly not the last. So to get to the problem is to restrict wages and transfers all over world in some way. Some type of american-sport cap spaces but with even smaller cap. There is no way players can be worth more then 50k a week or even cost milions of punds. Even that sum is to much. I know how capitalism and market works but if football don't take massures it will end, sonner or later.

Fans need to boycott elite football and go down and support their local team. It's a entertainment business at the end of the day. Not going to happen though. The solution for clubs is not to offer ludricious wages in the first place. Players have their contracts. You don't live in the real world if you think they are just going to take a massive paycut voluntarily.

People forget that even if Messi would accept to play for free, they couldnt sign him, because the overall salary cap is still too high. 95% goes to salaries, even without Messi's. They just cant register Messi. There is even a risk they cant register Aguero and Depay. They still havent registered them because they need to offload players. This isnt about Messi wanting even more money.

That figure is mindboggling and makes you wander about how incompetent the previous administration was.

Such a weird thinking. Slash wages 50%, really? Everyone knows their value and jobs that can be only done by the very few people in the world tend to be very well paid. Their career is relatively short so they want to earn as much as they can during that time. If you think it’s wrong then I think you are a bit out of touch with this world. I am sure Messi could survive on 1/100th of what he makes but why should he? Football is a job after all and you go to whoever offers you the best terms.
That is right. But doesn't suit well with his, I didn't want to do this and I love Barcelona. Just be true and say you leave beacuse of money and because Barcelona is in big problems that they can't afford me. He could stay with much less money but he choose other solution.

Great analogy. His 50% reduction in wages still amounted to roughly £1 million per week.

The parable of the rich man who would do whatever it takes to stay where he loves to live and play, everything except stop making more and more money….don’t cry on stage claiming love for something if money is the only obstacle from doing it…..unless you are hungry poor!!

Well if we believe reports he agreed to cut his wages by 30% but Barca still can’t afford him. So what is he supposed to do?

No this problem is 100% down to poor management, Barcelona have continuously been in the top 3 in terms of earnings. No other top club is remotely close to their issues including the ones earning significantly less.

I would say everyone at the club needs slashing atleast 50% or more. Though problems, though solutions.

I always had this image of Saint Messi the Messiah, but I found out today that the greedy cnut wont even play for free.

We don’t know that he wouldn’t play for free.
Spanish employement law dictates that any new contract can’t be below 50% of what they currently earn. So it would have been illegal if he did play for free or anything less than 50% of what he currently earns.

Exactly. That's what a lot of people on here are choosing to ignore. We haven't heard anything to say that they can no longer offer Aguero and Depay a contract regardless of whether they can be registered or not.

Someone here doesn’t understand what a contract or what a legal issue is.
Don't worry about me understanding about contracts and legal issues. I know what can be done and not done and how easy or hard it can be achived.

No you don’t. That’s exactly my point. This isn’t some fantasy. You can’t even do this on a game like FM let alone in reality. But good luck since you “know” what can be done.

It is easy to fool fans and supporters with tears but this has been long time coming. When you start taking blood out of a body regularly knowing that it will ultimately ran out of it. The sort of contracts and salaries these players are on were madness, no wonder they were pushing for European Super League.

This is a crises that hasn’t developed recently, it was coming due to astronomical figures of Messi and Ronaldo’s contracts. I fear the same at United to be honest in future. Clubs seriously need to sit down together and find a strategy for salary packages, transfers and agents if they want to avoid worse (i.e. bankruptcy, relegation etc.)

100% this. Many on here are correct in suggesting that he’s earned the right to demand those wages but clearly if he cared for the club as much as he does, then remove a zero from $2 million per week wage to help get the club back on track.

Something really off putting about him not being able to renew (even at a 50% pay cut) with a club he’s spent 21 years with yet can go and be paid ridiculous amounts of money by a oil run club in a shit league.

Football is bollocks sometimes.

I feel like that’s more the oil clube fault.

When it is now normal to throw 100M at players like Grealish and Lukaku or 65M on that CB arsenal bought or 150M for Coutinho etc obviously the players will demand more or else they are gone knowing these other clubs are willing to pay 50M for a bench player.

The astronomical transfer fees is what is killing football

I love Messi but the crying was a bit ridiculous. If he really wanted to stay, he could have accepted a lower salary or been a bit more flexible. He and his family are already set for life.
It's sad he won't get the send off his career deserved.

It's besides the point. He's not playing sunday league football. He's still playing at a level that requires total comittment and has all the expectations of the world on him since he's still considered the best in the world and by many the greatest of all time. It's incredibly hard work to maintain that level and he's obviously not going to do it for free or a wage that doesn't reflect his ability and stature.

It is a combination of things that snowballed into this mess. I think Neymar's departure unsettled Barca and the whole transfer market, then some bad decisions by the hierarchy costed Barca dearly. Dembele, Coutinho was never worth more than 80M.

No he could have not. The former Barca manaagement was toxic that is why Messi wanted to leave Barca last year. Now the situation is that they could not register him even for free. La liga is blocking it. He is forced to leave simple as that.

They don't hate rich people when it comes to Giggs and Scholes, they they suggest they would play for free. Giggs is still admired by many here.
Which is quite ironic when he's proven to be quite the nasty piece of work off the pitch compared to any of Messi's transgressions

I think it's a bit cynical to think that Messi isn't geniunely sentimental when he's leaving a club where he's been since he was 14 and is the greatest club legend in history. Regardless of how much money he's made there obviously Barcelona has been his life since he was a teenager and he's a god to the fans.

As I said don't worry about my knowledge regarding this kind of things. I know what can and can't be done and what solutions there is. What clubs and players can do if there is a will from both sides.

A player that's given 21 long years to a club where he has grown up and become a family man there crying when leaving is suspicious and disingenuous now just because he'll be earning money elsewhere?

Some people should really hear themselves right now and how batshit they sound

What are you talking. You are one of the many here talking about this like it was a gossip, without any information.

This is so stupid. Messi leaving Barcelona because they can't even register him. And people think he should play for free when his name only produces a HUGE amount of money for Barça. Money that's being wasted in players like Umtiti or Coutinho.

Full of haters. You should inform yourself before talking like this was just a tv show.

PSG it's the best option for him. Close to Spain were his family has lived all his life and in a team with known people and friends. All this situation it's sad, but Barça are a bunch of fecking idiots.
Just answer this question calmly and rationally. Did Messi want to leave last year?

We have actually heard a lot about it.

If you just bothered to read just a little bit you would have found out that even if he decides to play for no money, which he can’t legally in Spain, it still won’t be enough.

No he could have not. The former Barca manaagement was toxic that is why Messi wanted to leave Barca last year. Now the situation is that they could not register him even for free. La liga is blocking it. He is forced to leave simple as that.

Oh wow I did not realise that. That is incredibly sad.

There's no amount of flexibility that would have allowed him to stay. This is Barca's mess

He did and it was allegedly linked to Bartomeu and the board paying a company, L3 Ventures, to tarnish the image of several of their opponents. That's also why Bartomeu was arrested earlier this year.

His previous contract was ridiculous, but it's hardly the only reason the club is in the shape it is in.

160m for Coutinho, 105m for Dembele, 120m for Griezmann - that's half a billion on players who played well below the level of, say, Martial or Rashford. Pretty sure pique, who makes Lindelof look solid, had a bumper contract too.

Gaping hole on the left wing since Neymar left which they never bothered to fill properly, playing CAMs and RWs there. Zero backup for Suarez for years, culminating in that ridiculous Braithwaite move. Awful defence with multiple calamities (Pique, Lenglet, Umtiti). Nobody coming close to filling Alves' shoes, going forward or even defensively. Busquets ageing, and, till last year, alone and overrun in his position. Obviously nothing can replace Xavi and Iniesta, but they didn't have to stoop to Chinese League's Paulinho, past-it Vidal, and never-plays Pjanic. They let Modric and Kroos both go to Madrid, even as both their midfielders had started declining. No moves made for Pogba or Veratti or KdB or Fernandinho or Jorginho. And they let Thiago go too, why not.
Messi, Alba, Ter Stegen, and, in the last season, Pedri were their only consistent performers. 2 of these 4 (and Busquets) are well over 30. Ed Woodward could have sorted that team out given where they started and how much money they had.

At least with the ridiculous money they spent on Messi, they got something back on (and off) the pitch.

Just answer this question calmly and rationally. Did Messi want to leave last year?

Yes, he did. He said it in an interview after everything that happened and gave his reasons. Did you see the reasons? Finally they did not let him go and he stayed at the club, his contract ended and he remained as a free agent. Last year they could have sold it for $ 100 million to City.

What I'm going to is that many are saying that he is ambitious and only wants more money, when in reality, he agreed to cut his salary in half, but now we find out that he could not play for free even if he wanted to because the club cannot register him . Finally, the situation we see is the product of years of waste by the Bartomeu administration. Also as I said, why would the player who produces the most money have to play for free while other players who do not contribute anything would be winning hundreds of thousands of euros. Has no sense. Not to mention that the Club, with the current situation, since there are still players who cannot be registered, such as Aguero or Depay, ends up being a not very serious sporting project for the last years of their career. I find it sad that he ends up in a shitty club like PSG, but at least there he will be with people known as I said and it is the most viable option to compete for the Champions League, which is the biggest thorn he has, as he said in his same farewell today.

Some are too delusional thinking that players should play for free for their Club, as if they were their owners. If that were the case, go ahead, but they are not, it is finally a job and no matter how much love you have for a place, finally there are countless people who depend on you as the source of work that you are. Or do you think it is only up to him to decide to play for free? Obviously not. Everything is much more complex in the real world, which is not romantic at all.
