Lionel Messi \ Signs for PSG

Did Messi wipe those tears with straight cold cash from the reported £123 million per year he earned on his last deal? I mean it’s sad for football generally, but his wages were absolutely bonkers.
Do you blame him or Barca for that? I blame the management. But then again he is the best player in the world and you have to pay a premium if you want them to stay if not someone else will.

100% Barca should be blamed but those wages are just insane.

There are some absolute weapons in this thread. Expecting Messi to work for free or at 20% of his worth is not how things work in the real world.
The real football world is right now disconnected from the world. Football needs to come back to earth and stop floting on the clouds. This is exactly what happens when you lose connection with real world.

He should stay and play for 'free' whilst the other lesser players surrounding him get paid hundreds of thousands per week? How long do you reckon that rosy scenario would last?
Barcelona is in trouble and they should slash wages for every player with atleast 50%. I see no problem with that. If they want to play for Barcelona they would, if not terminate contracts and let them leave.

Dafaq you talking about? This isn’t his hobby to play for free. It’s his job. It’s prolly the last big contract he will earn. Just cause people have money doesn’t mean they won’t want more or need more. He wants his family looked after for the rest of his life and rightfully so.

You can’t blame anyone but Barca for this. The transfer fees they have paid and the contracts they have giving out these past few years are mind boggling and have come back to bite them in their ass.
Free is not same as "free". He could easy play for atleast 50% av his previous wage or even more. He has already made so much money that they can live without any problems next 500 years if they could. His family will have a good financial future even if he choose to stop playing now.

Barcelona (and current football market all over place) is the blame but players are involved in this to.

Slash wages for all players by 50%?

Do you guys live in fantasy world? Players have value, you know that right? There would be no one but academy players left at barca if they even suggested slashing everyone's salary by 50%. They would all sue barca and then leave for the SAME salary elsewhere.

If you have been reading you will know even if he plays for “free” or free it won’t be enough. Their salary cap is at 95% of revenue or something like that but according to La Liga rules it should be around 70% of their revenues.

Secondly we are in no position to judge how much a human being needs. The richer the people are the more they will need to sustain the lifestyle they have been living. So don’t just think they will be happy where they are and what they have is enough for the rest of their lives.

And you literally have no idea what you’re talking about with slashing players wages. They have a contract in place to pay players a certain amount. You just can’t slash it whenever you feel like it. The legal issues that will ensue will have them paying more money than they are now. And terminating contracts doesn’t mean you don’t pay players anything. You have to pay them what they owed up front to cancel and let them leave.

Others are expecting Messi to play for 'free' regardless of what the other Barcelona players do. That's the situation I'm referring to.

He indicated that he would play for half of his previous wage, or 30% according to some reports. But it still wasn't enough apparently.

Scholes and Giggs will not play for free if United is put in Barca's position. Fans are so gullible and driven by emotions they'll believe and say anything, specially when it comes to putting their own heroes on a pedestal.
I said I would like to think they would if they can stop the club from going to sh*t. Of course there's no way to find out.
I guess I'm just swayed by the fact that he tried his best to leave last season and now is back to claiming that he loves the club and did all his best to stay right when he's about to sign for the French moneybags. I'm not putting anyone on a pedestal but messi would have been on one if he actually did his best to stay.
Then again, I keep reading that barca wouldn't have been able to keep him even if he had agreed to play for free. So it's all a moot point in the end.

Can someone rationale explain to me why there is such hate towards Messi from some people today? I’ve read a comments a few posts back saying “He’s such an unlikeable character” bla bla.

Why can’t people comprehend that even playing at 50k a week, he’s still be exceeding Barca’s salary cap.

Is it because he’s going to PSG? The team that makes more sense than anything - playing with Neymar, who both players have publicly stated they’d like to play together again. Also, money is obviously a factor but people talking as if he’s the only footballer on the planet to aim for a pay rise before end of career.

Crazy hate for a player who doesn’t owe anyone anything more than what he’s done already.

A lot posters here are utterly delusional.

Yep, they're just casually disregarding the day to day workplace realities that would set in here.

There would have to be a kind of communal effort across the entire squad for it to work.

He is signing for PSG because that's the only team that can afford him and have a realistic chance at CL (and Neymar connection). Going to Real Madrid is not an option. Going to City was an option but they just signed Grealish. Where else should he go? Tottenham?

As far as I know, he wanted to stay at Barca and wasn't even made aware there was an issue. He'd already agreed to a substantial salary cut. People expecting him to play for free (while others are paid) live in a fantasy world. No player worth anything would ever play for free.

Tried to leave on a free last summer didn't he? Now he's crying because he's leaving. Everyone trying to save face.

It’s cause people here are delusional and want him to play for free if his tears are real and if he loves Barca so much which is a ridiculously stupid thing to say.

for Barcelona it’s like that saying “you destroy what you love”, but in this case what they loved destroyed them….

It's because they hate rich people. The only thing I find unlikeable about Messi is his tax evasion case. Apart from that I think he's enriched football in a way that few others have. Doesn't come across as a cnut on or off the pitch either.

It's more to do with his decision to join PSG. Although we don't know how many clubs offered him the contract.

When value is disconnected to the world, do you keep going same way or do you start to put some restrictions? If someone is driving straight towards a ravine, should the person keep driving or should the person think, well we can't keep it going like this.

There is difference of lifestyles. But having 10b or 3b isn't going to decide if you can survive or not in this world.

I'm not talking about Messi. The same goes to every player in the club. ANd if they are not okey with that, they should be free to go wherever they want.

They don't hate rich people when it comes to Giggs and Scholes, they they suggest they would play for free. Giggs is still admired by many here.

What are the chances of Scholes and Giggs playing for free in this scenario whilst bench-warmers are picking up tens of thousands per week? They should think about that too perhaps.

Zero. But you will have fans telling you they'd play for free because, well, they are united heroes. Amiright?

no more stupid than declaring you’ve offered to reduce your wages by 50% after you’ve damaged the finances beyond repair because of your demands which others stupidly agreed too. He’s 50/50 to blame for their financial situation. He rode the willing horse til it collapsed…then offered to lighten its load by kicking off one shoe

Nobody hates him. Stop with such dramatic nonsense.

I for one just can't stand the cut if his jib. Plus his tax evasion stories plus playing for Barcelona plus scoring against us in a CL final and so on. So yeah I'll never get warm to him at all. And now he's joining one of the most dislikable teams around. Very fitting.

To me a good example of loyalty was Del Piero when he went down to Serie B with Juve when others left them. But he wasn't playing for free.

People often confuse their fandom and the fact that not only that players are professionals who generally play for the club that provide them with the best football and financial package. People aren't just being too romantic but a bit deluded. An other thing, clubs change, people within clubs change and it's not impossible for a player to love a club and not love the current environment within a club, a player can love a club and still want to experience something else. And of course they can love a club and still decide that it's best for their future to get a bigger contract and more silverware.

He didn’t hold a gun to their head and ask them to pay that much? He asked and they obliged. They could have said no. But they didn’t. And no one asked them to pay Griezmann €800k per week and De Jong €400k per week.

Something like that.

Imagine including Keane in this scenario too - then the first training session comes and he spots a wage earner not giving what he considers their new full levels of effort (which has increased many times now in Roy's mind because they're receiving a wage...and he's not).

Tried to leave on a free last summer didn't he? Now he's crying because he's leaving. Everyone trying to save face.

What are you talking. You are one of the many here talking about this like it was a gossip, without any information.

This is so stupid. Messi leaving Barcelona because they can't even register him. And people think he should play for free when his name only produces a HUGE amount of money for Barça. Money that's being wasted in players like Umtiti or Coutinho.

Full of haters. You should inform yourself before talking like this was just a tv show.

PSG it's the best option for him. Close to Spain were his family has lived all his life and in a team with known people and friends. All this situation it's sad, but Barça are a bunch of fecking idiots.

I don’t think he needs to move to any specific team or league for a ‘challenge’. What does he have to prove to anyone? He’s in the twilight of his career. Go wherever you want and enjoy yourself.

We don't know a lot about footballers lives, apart from Giggs tbh, but I think it's fairly straightforward that the succes of players goes to their heads since they are living gods to their fans(well the great players) and I think a lot them probably wouldn't live up to the image that their most devoted fans would think of them. It's the case of most celebrities.

Well, for one you're on a United forum and there's still a lot of Ronaldo worship on here. Those two players have been inextricably linked through the years and you HAVE to pick one (those are the rules) so typically the other gets shit on. Not all the time, but you know.

Secondly, he's on an asinine amount of money so I suppose any sympathy is in short supply. Some are partly blaming him for Barca being in the predicament they're in now because of those wages (which is absurd, IMO). Barca are to blame for the state Barca are in.

And then, yeah, going to PSG probably doesn't help. I mean, it's not exactly a fairytale story that people can get behind, is it?

Should have joined Real Madrid.

On a more serious note, his career at Barcelona already is a fairytale. He doesn't need one beyond that.

Exactly. Cristiano and Messi have been kings for over a decade. If they want to now play in leagues that are less demanding, so what?

Great analogy. His 50% reduction in wages still amounted to roughly £1 million per week.

You can put restrictions. But you can't expect a GOAT level player to play for 'free'. That's incredibly stupid.
It doesn't matter if you are GOAT or average. If a club is in financial problems, every player need to make some sacrifice if they want to play for the club. So if you are Messi or Pedri. Paycut is solution.

This whole problem is because football has become bigger then what they can manage in terms of money. Barcelona is not the first club and certanly not the last. So to get to the problem is to restrict wages and transfers all over world in some way. Some type of american-sport cap spaces but with even smaller cap. There is no way players can be worth more then 50k a week or even cost milions of punds. Even that sum is to much. I know how capitalism and market works but if football don't take massures it will end, sonner or later.

Great and smart move by him. Barcelona have been a “dying” club for years with no shot of winning the CL. It would have been a waste for Messi.

At PSG he will now be part of by far the best front 3 assembled in the sport currently and will win multiple Ligue titles racking up both numbers and trophies and with a real chance at CL glory yet again.

I for one am excited to see him in Paris.

Such a weird thinking. Slash wages 50%, really? Everyone knows their value and jobs that can be only done by the very few people in the world tend to be very well paid. Their career is relatively short so they want to earn as much as they can during that time. If you think it’s wrong then I think you are a bit out of touch with this world. I am sure Messi could survive on 1/100th of what he makes but why should he? Football is a job after all and you go to whoever offers you the best terms.

It’ll be good to see if he can win them a CL but the league campaign is going to be a waste of time. They’d walk it with or without him. Come on Ole pull your finger out and get him at United ffs

He offers to forgo his salary for a year, which inspires Griezmann, Coutinho, Dembele and co to take a massive pay cut. He's not banned by the league.

What sort of delusion is this?
How have you just decided that those would have taken paycuts?
