Lionel Messi - Performances

I always love searching for the Ray Hudson commentary after he's scored some amazing goal, or we've won a Clasico, because it's entertaining as hell.

I should add the colossal caveat that I have never actually watched a full match with Ray Hudson in the commentary, so I can imagine it might grate somewhat.

"MESSI LEAPS DEEP INTO THE BLUE SEAS OF NARNIA, AND PLUCKS A PEARL FROM THE EYES OF THE FISH GOD. LIKE A SNAKE WITH BINOCULARS, HE FINDS RAKITIC WITH THE LASER GUIDED MISSILE, AND THE CADBURYS AVENGER THROWS A SPEAR....IN THE HEARTS OF THE ENEMY!!!!"

Normal commentator = Rakitic sclaffs a 4 yard tap in home, 1-0 to Barcelona.

That's a pretty good Hudson impression... I wish I were joking.

Absolutely love the @Feed Me and @kouroux exchange in the first few posts.

Now we know Feed Me started the whole comparison thing and kouroux had the foresight to see how much of a pain in the ass it would become.

God, I've been wasting my time on the Caf for a long time now...

In all seriousness, it's ended up panning out pretty much as predicted in the opening page of that thread: Ronaldo has gone toe to toe with Messi, putting up similar numbers through sheer bloody mindedness and no shortage of ability in his own right. But it's hard to dispute the idea that Messi is on his own in terms of jaw dropping natural talent.

It's been a privilege to watch them duke it out for the last decade.

Exactly what I felt when I read that thread  Cheer up man, it cannot be that bad can it :( ?

He scored 91 goals in a year and I might screamed every single one of them, but this video really captures why I love Messi, he's even better than the absurd amount of goals he scores

Where are the headers though? Can't be complete without headers.

You couldn't make it up.

Messi retires after the Copa... decides not to before the Uruguay qualifier

Messi suspended 4 games... rescinded after one so he can play against us

The upside is I'll see him live again. The downside is I won't enjoy it

Sucks for you guys, but I thought it was the right decision.

Yeah, but it would have been better for us and Argentina that he sat out our game instead of the one against an eliminated Bolivia.

My guess is Chile removed the complaint or made it known they wouldn't complain as after the last round they are better off with Argentina winning that game.

Insane! Seriously mind boggling how one can score 91 goals in a year and it is only one part of what made him great. I am not sure many people realise just what an insane achievement it is to be the best goalscorer, dribbler and play maker in the world all at once.

This video is an example of why in a few years after he has retired, discussion like R9 vs Messi who was better, it wont even be there as it's no discussion. The current Messi isnt the best Messi of himself but still one of the GOAT, but at his absolute peak, just the best, as people remember R9 at his absolute peak and not the moments where he was lesser.

Do you mean Brazilian Ronaldo? Because I think the discussion is usually Messi vs Pele vs Maradona. I am not sure I've heard R9 involved in many of these. Not that I disagree or anything as he is one of my all time 5 favourite players.

Apart from all that, he's a genius literally. His football IQ is the highest I have ever seen. He almost always seem to take the best choice at every play. It's ridiculous. He plays as he was watching from the stands.

There are Ronaldo vs Messi threads, and really there are people saying Ronaldo9 was better at his peak, which is absolute bollocks imo. He was faster, and stronger and maybe more explosive but other than that there's nothing Messi isnt better at.

It's clear people don't realise it. You quite literally have a player who can play anywhere in the forward line and be called the greatest of all time. The guy is literally the best dribbler and best passer of all time. A freak of nature. Jose's description of him as a cheat code is the most apt one.

More skillful, as well.

I don't even know how those discussions can be seriously held. The moments where they did things we'd consider Messi-like are held up as the highlights of their careers. It's hard to even think what the highlight moment of Messi's career is in terms of a moment of pure skill because he does things pretty much every week that other players won't achieve in their entire lives.

Greatest player of all time for me, and not even close.

I can't really disagree. I am not usually comfortable with declaring anything "of all time" as I just feel different eras simply cannot be compared but if there is anyone who can be called, Messi is. To score as many as the best goalscorers do like Cristiano and have the skill, vision, flair etc as the likes of Maradona is simply beyond belief.

This is a great interview. It's great to see Messi as normal as this.

The interview with Suarez where they're playing cards is great too

Back in 2007 and before playing his first Copa America and was already discussed for his performances with Argentina :wenger::wenger:

Was a glorious run and finish. Questionable defending as always but what a season he's had

It should be shown from the beginning. Basically the epitome of Barca's season

Odd game tonight, some horrible misses but what a lovely goal to finish off the season.

it has come to the point where I don't even react when he scores a goal like that and for me, that's even bigger achievement than his records. he could score a header from 20m and it still wouldn't surprise me. it's Messi.

If he scored a header it would definitely surprise me. But you're right, this sort of goal has become pretty standard for him. He's not going to win the award but he's been the best in the world this season. What a season he's had again.

I swear, I almost feel like I'm watching T. Henry doing one of his boring trademark 1 on 1 placed shot. he makes those impossible goals look so easy that no one even reacted yesterday in la liga thread, almost like he can't suprise us anymore. it's ridiculous.

I'm happy for him that he'll win the Pichichi and Golden Shoe awards again, it's been a while. Nice baubles to pad out an already bulging award collection.

I don't really follow La Liga so I have no idea about who's scored what (I checked the table for the first time earlier and was surprised to see Barca lost the league despite having a +79 GD). I assumed Ronaldo would be top scorer as every time I glance in the La Liga thread it's "Ronaldo!!" (and he's been a goal machine in the CL) But turns out Messi is top scorer with a mere 53 goals in 51 games. He never ceases to amaze me. A quick look on wiki tells me that's now 506 goals in just the 582 games. Phenomenal. I think what sums up how amazing he is that there's not much fuss made when he scores ~50 goals in a season; it's just an average Messi season.

He's been so much better than Ronaldo this year, it's a farce if they end up with the same number of Balon D'ors.

Stevie Wonder can see Messi is better in almost every single metric.

These Barcelona fans that have had season tickets in the last 20 years have witnessed joy like no other football fans. Surely?

- Seeing that season from Ronaldo De Lima
- Ronaldinho between 04 and 06
- Seeing Messi day in day out for the last 10 years or so not to mention the other mini super stars/football gods like Iniesta, Xavi etc.

This is not mentioning FOUR CL final appearances without defeat or even the heartache of extra time.

They have been blessed.

Go back just a little earlier and they had Romario, Stoichkov and Laudrup to drool over as well.

That body swerve was out of this world.. I don't think any defender would have had a chance - came out of nowhere

Oh yes that was a beauty. He made a total and complete fool of the defender there. For all the talk of him being "disinterested" and despite Barca's lack of anything called a midfield, he's just been so far ahead of everyone this season. Absolutely carried Barcelona all year.
