Lionel Messi - Performances

Burning an indellable mark on the soul of your enemy that will no doubt become an iconic reference to the devestation he has heaped upon them in Clasico's has to include humility why?

That was the ultimate 'Leo woz 'ere.' gesture that can never be scrubbed away. More a statement of fact than anything to do with ego, anyway: he has been the ultimate thorn in the side for them and yesterday essentially was the cementation of that. None of the opposing players or support who were there will forget what he did last night, same goes for a vast majority of the watching millions around the world.
Just like the Calma! ;)

The guy plays like an angel with wings. What a player.

To be fair, the rule was already there. It's a ridiculous rule but the ref has to book him. Iniesta was booked for showing a message for Puerta, wasn't he?
I know it was, just meaning that sponsors shouldn't dictate the rules cause this shit has come from them.

What a player. He's now scored 500 goals for Barcelona in 577 appearances. I remember we celebrated Rooney's achievement of scoring 250 Man Utd goals - this guy has scored double that in nearly the same number of appearances. Machine.

Literally in awe, not just the goals or the storybook winner, for the whole 90 minutes, with Casemiro all over him at times, he's just doing so much in terms of being his own playmaker at times....seems to go ignored how good he is in that role really unless he scores on top of it. At times it felt like it was a triple pivot behind him, but Rakitic showed up with his glimpse of brilliance.

Can't wait until he replaces Busquets because feck it he will.

Sumptuous last night. From the moment he embarrassed Casemiro (where Casemiro got the yellow card) he was clearly up for it. That first goal was immense. The way he ghosted past Carvajal, I dont think any other player could have done that in such a tight little space and at that speed.

Mental isn't it. Even more so when considering his longevity, and the age Messi turned it on as well. 9 consecutive seasons of 38 goals or over is insane.

Not in our lifetime, maybe someone might eventually shine brilliantly but for as long & consistently as Messi? Improbable

Probably a good chance of society falling before someone comes along better than Messi.

The longevity, the goals, the amount of self created "worldies" , the creativity.

It's hard to imagine someone anywhere near as good. He's always been grouped with CR7 by the media etc..... But the truth is there is a huge chasm between them.

The best of all time.

Watched his highlights again at lunch time.

Incredible. The qualities he has, it's astonishing a single player could be that good at so many attributes. Finishing, dribbling, passing, positioning, reading the game....

Ronaldo is a hell of a player, and I'm thrilled to have said that I've watched him live (I was there when he scored his first hatrick against Newcastle). But I'll be fueled with regret if I don't try and watch Messi play live at least once during his career. The man is simply the impossible player.

Messiah.

You just know no other player is going to make a run like he did for the 1-1. You just know no other player is going to put the ball that far in the corner in ET like he did for the winning goal.

It will be interesting to see where Messi's career goes over the next couple of seasons. I think he is perfectly capable of usurping this one by a strong margin to the point some will say he is resurgent when really, we'll just be seeing him in a functional team once more. He's a long, long way from being done as the best player in the world. If he does manage that, we'll have witnessed the longest time at the very top any footballer has had throughout his career, which is a merit in itself that not even Maradona or Pelé can contest.
To be fair, Pele started a bit earlier. He was an established star at 17 and would've won Ballon D'Or (by France Football's reevaluation) at 18, alongside his first World Cup. Messi only became BPITW contender at 19. Ffs, "only"

Great post though.

Yeah. What I liked most about his second goal was the fact that he anticipated it so early - he literally walked to the point where the ball would be in a few seconds to finish it off. He doesn't even try to run into the free space that opens up on the right. He already knows where the ball would be when Gomes makes his pass to Alba

Oh, I wasn't factoring the span from the start of prominence to the 'end', per se, rather that 29/30 was the point at which both of the other two really fell off a cliff in relation to themselves. Cumulative wear and tear could, or I suppose should, be added as a factor, but I personally believe it's because both got kicked, literally and figuratively, out of the game and thus didn't get the chance to get the organic ending Messi is likely to be afforded if all things to date in his career remain the same (reffing, protection and injuries in particular).

Even though Maradona was a god amongst men at 16, he probably doesn't fit the narrative compared to Pelé and Messi due to both his emotional outbursts and maturity being a long way behind his talent until his early 20's and the turmoil his addictions caused throughout his career. Pelé is the only one of the three who pretty much popped up and was hailed by others as the BPITW straight out of the gate. Compared, it took Messi a few more years to be regonised as such, and Maradona pretty much nine years if we consider that his talent and touting was always there from 16 straight through to 25 when he did what he did at the WC and usurped Zico and Platini once and for all. Pelé, like Messi, got to the top and was simply a lock as the best (or neck-and-neck with it) in the world for at least twelve years straight. Maradona's actual time at the top is tiny by comparison to the other two, which is a bit of a tragedy considering he really was phenomenal well before 1986 cemented him.

It's nice reading the old thread: https://www.redcafe.net/threads/lionel-messi.225097/
There's already discussion if he's the greatest player ever on the first page, almost 9 years ago. At that point he wasn't near the stupidly high number of goals that came in the following years.
(There's also people already sick of the Ronaldo comparisons in 2008 )

Absolutely love the @Feed Me and @kouroux exchange in the first few posts.

Now we know Feed Me started the whole comparison thing and kouroux had the foresight to see how much of a pain in the ass it would become.

For a very long time now I was convinced that Ronaldo Lima was the best player of the past 30 years but me and a few of my friends were watching highlight reels of Messi, Ronaldo Lima, Cristiano and Dinho at the weekend doing pretty much everything from running, passing and dribbling to shooting. Now I can say I was most certainly wrong. For all the talent and the body Ronaldo de Lima had and factoring in that he was used as a single attacking outlet in teams that weren't blessed with an abundance of talent like Barcelona were during the last 10 years, he still wasn't as complete and versatile as Messi is. Pretty much everything about him is just pure magic and he isn't even at his best atm. When talking about Xavi and Iniesta we talk about generational talents in midfield and Messi could pretty much do everything they did while adding creativity and goal threat. I suppose it will be much clearer to us all as soon as he retires and we won't get to see his kind of quality on a regular basis.

The 'we won't see this again' was said when each of Di Stefano, Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, etc. were playing. All are still greats in their own right so will be Messi and Cristiano, but I would hope we get to see another few of such ilk in our lifetimes, which I don't think is really far fetched.

Who's that aimed at?

You open a nearly 10 year old thread and it's Ronaldo v Messi, I can't believe it

Never realized it's been 10 years on the caf already :wenger: I think it is safe to say that Messi has fulfilled his potential.

I'd go back even further tbh, the Getafe goal was 10 years ago & the Stamford Bridge showcase was 11 years ago. For me, it was clear he was unique from the first moment he came onto the pitch for the first team 13 years ago

I always love searching for the Ray Hudson commentary after he's scored some amazing goal, or we've won a Clasico, because it's entertaining as hell.

I should add the colossal caveat that I have never actually watched a full match with Ray Hudson in the commentary, so I can imagine it might grate somewhat.

"MESSI LEAPS DEEP INTO THE BLUE SEAS OF NARNIA, AND PLUCKS A PEARL FROM THE EYES OF THE FISH GOD. LIKE A SNAKE WITH BINOCULARS, HE FINDS RAKITIC WITH THE LASER GUIDED MISSILE, AND THE CADBURYS AVENGER THROWS A SPEAR....IN THE HEARTS OF THE ENEMY!!!!"

Normal commentator = Rakitic sclaffs a 4 yard tap in home, 1-0 to Barcelona.

Yeah, take your shirt off and show everyone your name for 10 seconds (like they didn't already know) then cross yourself like some imaginary being in the sky has anointed you. Very humble.

To be fair it probably happened.

Is there a thread about him from when he first burst onto the scene? Couldn't find one myself
