Lionel Messi - Performances

Well the ref didn't put the Messi incident in his after match report despite him seeing it so he didn't think Messi done anything wrong.

Fifa or who ever then decide to ban him on video evidence by lip reading.

Surely if Messi deserved a ban the ref would have either taken action then and there or put it on the after match report.

I dont think the exact same happened between Medel and Valdivia?

Posted this in the Ronny thread but holy sh*t, Messi's stats in this graphic are insane.

Barcelona have a very big problem when their best finisher is playing 30 to 40 m away from goal. The structure of the team is so awful. This is the worst Barcelona side since 07/08 by some distance.

I am not too sure. He's playing in the same areas he's done for the last few years. Could it be he's lost some dynamism. I'm not sure if i remember correctly, but Messi has always collected the ball from deep areas.

The midfield were able to give him a clean ball. Now, because of how subpar their atracking structure is he can go almost 10 minutes without touching the ball if he doesn't drop into midfield directly or sometimes pick the ball from a defender directly.

It's the antithesis of the position game for a player to have to dribble 4-5 players to score a goal. Everyone packs the centre so he is a lot easier to defend.

He has lost a bit of his burst of pace but he is still one of the best dribblers alongside Hazard.

If he is not creating chances then the team look completely lost. It is the biggest one man team I have seen this season. Luis Enrique is a terrible coach for the club and that treble was possibly the worst thing for the clubs future.

Messi has at least equal the goalscoring ability of Ronaldo (needing less help from teammates to create them, he mostly creates them himself where Ronaldo finishes off alot of brilliant moves from teammates - his fans will call that an amazing quality to be at the right place, I call it being a good poacher) and has the skills to be a top 3 midfielder/no.10 of all time on top of that and I'm being shy to give respect to some golden oldies.

He has been a bit shit lately in the CL. The last 'worldclass' performance by Messi in Europe was against Bayern in 2015?

TBF the Barca squad in general have been underwhelming since then, glaring weaknesses in their squad. They have the best attack in the world with a midfield that is past it, or not good enough and their defence is a shambles, midfielders as fullbacks etc.

How do you find a replacement for Xavi? It's like us trying to replace Scholes and now Carrick, not an easy task.

Aye, they've had two midfielders in the discussion for best of our generation in Iniesta and Xavi, now they've got an Iniesta on his last legs and Andre Gomes ffs. Not to add, sooner rather than later they'll have to start looking for a replacement for Busquets too. If they want to get back to dominating as easily as they have been over this past decade, they need to bring in defenders and midfielders of the required quality. When MSN isn't at the top of their game, they look very underwhelming.

Busquets could go on for as long as Alonso IMO. He doesn't rely on his physical attributes that much. The key to their resurgence would be Verratti, or someone of a similar ilk. The likes of Thiago, Kroos and Pjanic are the type of Barca players you would expect them to have but they're at their european rivals which is worrying for Barca because it looks like they're slacking.

IMO, the club's a bit fecked, especially if Neymar leaves. Why they've decided to undertake the redevelopment of Camp naou when their squad needs major investment, I'll never know.

Messi isn't the same Messi he once was, but he's still a potent threat and still IMO when on form, the best creative force on the planet.

For me Barca if they are serious about remaining the best side in Europe, they need to invest.. the right back situation is a running joke and the midfield isn't competitive enough in big games. It lacks legs and defensively gets found out alot.

The interplay up front is more predictable than it used to be, because there isn't enough players interchanging and getting involved in the build up.

A good summer transfer window.. new CB, RB, Verratti, Coutinho.. and if they hold onto MSN. They'll be a threat again next year. But investment is needed and they need some galactico oomph in the engine room.

Messi is declining really fast now, probably faster than Ronaldo; but he has tried, still one of the greatest in this generation...can't blame him much for any missteps when he's sharing the stage with the greatest player of all time

It's only understandable he'd be sharing the stage with himself.

Hah, preposterous claim. Have you checked this season's stats?

Messi has 43 goals in 43 matches, plus 13 assists, whereas Ronaldo has 28 goals in 37 matches, plus 12 assists.

And they keep using the messi is playing in a more doninant team argument but that goes up in flames this season as well. Barca behind madrid on all stages yet messi still outscores the poacher which is the only thing he hadthat is on par with messi.

 Great one, suddenly the goal stat is a clear indication who's better? During the ONE season in many that Messi is scoring more?

Messi's always been a better goalscorer. He just has other assets equally as impressive that he prioritises for the team.

If you really want to do this again, go dig up the Messi v Ronaldo thread, I'm not taking the blame for derailing this thread.

What? He was the one insisting that Messi's rapidly going downhill. The stats might not settle who's better, but they're certainly enough to rubbish that claim.

You really jealously guard your reputation as a knee-jerk Ronaldo defender, don't you?
