Lionel Messi - Performances

Few times I've watched him this season, he looks a bit more explosive than last season. Good to see.

Maybe that ligament injury is now fully healed. Seems like Messi takes longer than usual to fully heal up after sustaining an injury.

@FCBarca sad part is, no matter how many good performances he puts in for Argentina, the myth that he doesn't perform for his NT seems to be peddled every single time.

Well, we know the spin on that though

The beauty is, the enjoyment I get seeing him in this form isn't predicated on any affirmation from anyone else. The true fan of the sport, they know

Yeah it's become annoying. If Higuain put his chances away, people would be speaking a different tune. 1 WC and 1 Copa. Despite Messi having no control over those misses.

He looks fired up. I wonder why, maybe Ronaldo winning the CL + Euro has had an effect on Messi's motivation.

Might be in store for a similar season to 2014-2015. I thought that was his 2nd best season personally.

The funny thing is that I feel other players underperform a lot more when it comes to playing for Argentina, di Maria always seems to vanish when it matters and so do Higuain and Agüero.

I mean look at this attacking lineup.

Higuain
di Maria -- Agüero -- Messi

That's one damn great attacking lineup but somehow it all stands or falls with Messi having a great game and winning it on his own for Argentina.

Hey I'm not going to turn this into a "versus" the other guy debate again, but those comments are, I'd guess, mostly from either fans of the other guy or people who hardly watch him for Argentina. Either way, it's sad that instead of enjoying 2 vastly different athletes at the top of their game, it's become a bit of tit for tat. Put the 1 down to big up the other. But nuff said, before this descends.

@FCBarca aargh, agreed, on song, beating defenders, spraying passes, assists, goals etc, it's great to watch. It's literally the reason most of us would have fallen in love with football.

I've hardly ever seen di Maria (a friendly against Germany after WC '14 aside) or Aguero have a blinder for their NT, especially when Messi is out of the game. But I watch roughly 50% of their NT games (WC/Copa aside) though, so could be wrong.

People always point to "look at Argentina's attack"....blah blah. But some of those guys have been serious under performers, especially at the biggest tournaments, in my memory anyway.

Higuain being the biggest bottler I've seen in recent years.

Yeah all 3 have seriously under-performed for Argentina. Probably none more so than Aguero, but that's for a different topic.

The only player Messi's been able to count lately with Argentina has been Mascherano.

Before that season Atletico won the league and Real won the CL so I guess seeing others do better motivates Messi.

That's journey time shipping him back for treatment to the planet he came from.

Absolutely carried his team last night. I still chuckle about the retirement hissy fit, but he was almost unplayable.

12 of Higuain's 30 goals for the national team have come in tournaments.

The guy comes in for such unnecessary stick.

He gets so much stick because he has the tendency to miss absolute sitters in important games. Robben had great stats for years but until a few years ago he was a major big game bottler. Then somehow he turned it around, I have yet to see that from Higuain.

This is the greatest Messi video I've ever watched. We only have 4/5 more years left of him in his prime. :(

Di Maria had a great World Cup. Aguero's been the most disappointing considering his talent.

Higuaín gets all the stick from the media but he's been better for Argentina than Aguero has.

It's time this myth ended now that he's not our player anymore. Only Messi and Macherano performed and maybe the odd squad player. Di Maria was poor. Aguero is almost always poor in the big tournaments. Higuain is poor in the key moments.

I wonder when we will see a player like him again. The likes of Neymar etc won't be able to reach near his peak.

Doubt that. He can play until he is 40 if he wants to, he has the vision and creativity, and the passing ability to be an amazing midfield maestro.

No one today so far has done what Messi did between the age of 18 and 22.

He probably has it in him to drop deeper and play the same role Pirlo did, and most likely play it just as well well in to his late 30's. He really is that good.

speaking of Messi compilations this 2 are my favorites:

Spot on. Di Maria had a relatively poor and injury plagued World Cup, from what I remember anyway.

Agree about Di Maria. It's becoming a big myth about Aguero's performances at big tournaments as well.

Copa America 2011 - Started 2 games from 4 appearances. 3 goals
Copa America 2015 - 3 goals in 5 games.
Copa America 2016 - Started 1 game.

No idea how he can be criticized for his productivity at three Copa America's when he has 7 goals in 8 starts. Doesn't always play as a CF either for Argentina or is the penalty taker.

World cup 2010 - 1 goal, 1 start and two 15 minute cameos.
World cup 2014 - Got injured half way through the tournament, was decent in the groups playing out of position.

Would think Aguero has started every game in these five tournaments, hardly scored, going by the treatment and comments he receives for his performances at the big tournaments. Should he do more? Yeah with his talent he should, is there valid reasons for his inconsistency? Certainly.

It is crazy to think that he used to be a more explosive and insane player younger when you currently watch him and still see that he is the best. He has changed a little over the years in terms of style of play but he is still the best.

I can't remember who said it, I think it was an NFL player, but it was along the lines of "if I could have my body at 25 and my brain at 35". I think Messi will reach that perfect in between where his mind and his physical assets will cross.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I only drink mate with my mom or some friends, or at work. Basically I drink it when someone's prepearing it, I'm too lazy to do it.

This is one of my fav vids of Messi. It's a little bit different from the others.

Then this one comes out

and then the others posted before. I also like the ones from JavierNathaniel called "Lionel Messi overall 201X"

To be fair, even I can make a video of Messi and it will still be drool worthy. The subject is that good. Glad we still have few years of him and the stupid retirement business is put to rest. Imagine the day he actually retires.

Definitely. When you watch his career highlights, you can see the transformation in his game although he has elements of all his best traits throughout, IMHO - as time went on, he perfected areas of his game that were less consistent.

Reminds me of Jordan back in the day, he kept developing his game even when he was head & shoulders the best

It will be a depressing day for sure and this not just for Barca and Argentina fans.
