Lionel Messi - Performances

It's time this myth ended now that he's not our player anymore. Only Messi and Macherano performed and maybe the odd squad player. Di Maria was poor. Aguero is almost always poor in the big tournaments. Higuain is poor in the key moments.
 It's not a myth. Di Maria was in the Team of the Tournament and had many good performances... he was a massive loss for them in the final.

Imagine if this guy joined MUFC, in the next 2-3 years.
Some in here, may need to takes days off work, while they celebrate the occasion. This forum will also probably be inaccessible for a few days.

No player I have watched comes close to what he's capable of. He makes all his team mates look average when he's at his best it's ridiculous.

Took my time to watch the entire video. Crazy compilation. He's like a fast tricky winger, an efficient finisher, a midfield playmaker and an accomplished set-piece taker all rolled into one. The silky passes, incessantly intricate dribbling, powerful shots where doesn't even seem to raise the leg  The best ever for me.

Also, that poor Celta player around 11:50 was made to look like a muppet

That particular Celta match is great for making several players look like muppets

any gifs from the Celtic game apart from goals/assists?

Ridiculously good, GOAT for me, only other that can be in contention is Pelé but I just cant comprehend a better footballer than Messi.

Poor Celtic though.

He literally is pissing on players. I don't know if there will ever be a player half as good as he is. Barca isn't the same without him, he creates more than half of their chances even for his goals he usually starts the attacks himself.

He's the greatest goalscorer, dribbler & passer EVER. Absurd.

Better goalscorer than Maradona, surely, but better dribbler and passer - very dubious. There wouldn't be any debate whether Messi is a greater player than Maradona if that were the case. Admit that you haven't watched much of Maradona.

Wouldn't quite say he was in GOAT mode last night but certainly Messi mode. Definitely makes things easier as the team lacked rhythm early and by the end they were really putting on a show, in many ways they still look a bit like they are in pre-season still

Not GOAT mode by his standards no, but still scored an easy hat trick by his standards and managed to create so many killer balls that weren't finished, could have had maybe 3 assists in the game and a few more key passes.

I don't want him to ever retire.

I totally relate. I think I will be watching a lot less football when he hangs them up, spoiled me for the game

Dribbler is dubious, passer, not so much. I havent seen one player with the vision and the almost always perfect weight of the pass. The amount of chances and defences he break he creates is ridiculous.

I'd agree with this - he is one of the finest passers I have seen, better than Maradona imo - better goalscorer without a doubt too. Maradona was a supreme dribbler though and Messi may be beaten on that although Messi's game has changed a lot from when he was a young kid when he was dribbling past 2-3 people for fun.

I don't think Messi is the best passer ever.

Best passer in the final 3rd though? He's certainly up there as one of the best ever. Easily the best currently. Levels above anyone honestly. The weight of his passing will never cease to amaze.

I always wait for these Overall vids :drool::drool:

Ignoring how good he is, that shows how shocking the defending in La Liga is. How many times do Barcelona have to run in behind the defence from the left before defenders cotton on that it might be a good idea to track the runs?

Agree with this. I think Xavi was a good level above in his consistent ball retention, whereas even last night there were occasions when I thought Messi lost the ball a little wastefully for someone often considered as the greatest passer of all time.

La liga teams are way ahead of their English counterparts tbh. EPL teams might have bigger defenders but tactically and technique wise not a chance. It might look like they are weak because they get pissed on by the big boys but the big two would destroy the EPL.

Messi is superior to Xavi in terms of passing I think. Messi is more creative with his passes, his passes are more intricate and he makes most of his passes are from the final third where there is more pressure.

They've got different roles really so it's a tricky comparison. Messi plays much higher so gets the opportunity to play the riskier final ball more often. There is nobody in the game that has matched Xavi's midfield dominance, ball retention and short passing game. Where the likes of Messi and Platini stand out is that final ball, but it's probably worth acknowledging how effective Xavi was at his very best at that from 25-30 yards back down the park (32 assists in 2008/09).

It's also very difficult to compare this Barcelona team to great passers from other teams. It's an almost unique environment when we consider how dominant they are, how their default position is typically in the attacking third, how many options they have on the ball, how brilliant their attackers are in 1v1 situations which draws extra players out, etc.

I think Maradona was a slightly better passer. His ability to hit it first time was unparalleled.

As Lowe pointed out, last two English coaches to come to Camp Nou left on the losing end of 7-0

That's not true anymore this season. City, United and Chelsea, all have squads/ managers that can compete with the Spanish top 2. Liverpool and Arsenal could put up a fight also in a one off game.

He might mean English as in "British" aka Rogers and Gary Neville.

He's the best passer I've seen by a good distance. The ease with which he plays drool-worthy passes is insane.

All of that remains to be seen.

In a one-off game Alaves can also compete with Barcelona.

City, United and Chelsea are nowhere near the Spanish big 2. In a title race they'd be lagging far behind in most cases.

This x100. It's a struggle to get my head around how absurdly good this guy is.

His highlights video after he retires will be something else entirely.

It'll be about 30 hours long. No repeats, just realtime clips of goals, assists, dribbles, skills and tricks.

He's 7 goals behind Ronaldo in terms of Champions League goals. But Ronaldo has played 20 more times in the competition.

Considering that he is over 2 years younger than Ronaldo and his style of play is more transferable to a different role within the Barcelona team, I think he will overtake him by the time they both retire.

Messi hasn't been as hungry for goals over the past year or two. He seems happier to let his buddy Suárez score the goals and really enjoys setting goals up for Neymar and co.

He's is unquestionably The GOAT for me. Had Argentina won that final, there wouldn't even be a debate. At least not for me.
