Lionel Messi - Performances

World cup is a mickey mouse cup. I don't give a shit about it.

So what if you don't give a shit about it? The champions league might be the height of quality, but the World Cup is the pinnacle of prestige. Every single player in world football dreams of winning the World Cup, it doesn't get any bigger.

International tournaments are not Micky mouse competitions.

they are. International breaks are detested by fans. International games are boring and barely attract viewing figures.

the only time people care is the world cup, and it's more about the celebration of the sport than about the actual competition, which is often dull and boring.

Oh my word! It's such a pleasure to be reading some of the comments in this thread after the events in the last few hours. So, Messi is booked for diving, waves imaginary cards (I wonder where he got that from), misses a penalty in a loss to the only decent opponent in the tournament (Columbia was alright and Brazil was abysmal) in what was his last chance to win something with senior Argentina side and then gives up and retires. There is so much room for going further into this and putting his Barcelona numbers in a bit of perspective. But, I will refrain and wait for Messi apologists to post their crap so I can laugh some more. Give time some time, said a wise man.

Alex Ferguson: “Now don’t get me wrong, Messi is a fantastic player, it’s like he’s wearing slippers when he controls the ball. But here, for me, is the difference. Messi is a Barcelona player. But Ronaldo could play for Stockport County and score a hat-trick. He has everything. He can shoot with both feet, head the ball, he’s as brave as a lion, and here’s something else people overlook."

Crazy and makes it look more about him than anything
I get he's frustrated at Argentina losing so many finals, but he still has lots to offer the team so comes across as a bit of a prima Donna by quitting.

You sure you know the meaning of this word?

"A very temperamental person with an inflated view of their own talent or importance"

It just smacks of someone throwing their toys out of the pram! He's arguably the greatest of all time, but feels like he's deciding to quit as the team isn't living up to his expectations. He's in his prime and has a lot to offer the team, so quitting makes no sense from a team perspective, only his...

If he is not living upto his expectations, how does that translate to being a prima donna? when one quits is his decision, you don't make such decision based on popular vote. He lost 4 finals, has been ridiculed in his country by many people. I think he had made this decision before the game itself. BTW, it's not just him, many others like Aguero, Masche, ADM all are leaving. Are all of them now prima donnas? Argentina must be country full of prima donnas.
What do you call Maradona/Pele if you find Messi and others prima donnas?

Why are they quitting? It is not because they are struggling for fitness and / or need to prolong their playing career at club level. Similarly, they are not imposing a glass ceiling on the next generation.

Messi is arguably the greatest footballer in the world, and him quitting Argentina is a personal choice, and his decision will negatively affect the team, so yes his actions appear selfish rather than serving the greater good.

Same goes for the likes of Di Maria and Aguero if they are choosing to do the same!

What has Pele got to do with it?

dont think he will retire and fwiw he had a very good final, not his fault that the team is poor and that his strike partner is surely the biggest bottler in football history.

The same Sir Alex that thought Moyes was the one to take over after him.
Take managers opinions with a pinch of salt tbh

Imagine being Sir Alex Ferguson and having your assessments questioned by a sammyvine or something just because you may have picked Moyes to succeed you.

You what?
What I'm saying is manager opinions about players are worthless. They have an agenda and are bias so not everything they say tends to be exactly what they are thinking.
Why would Fergie even back Messi anyway? His has never managed him before and lost against him and his team
twice in the CL final. Fergie even said 'Ronaldo is his boy' in the whole Messi vs Ronaldo debate so he even acknowledged that bias comes into it.
Guardiola said Ronaldo isn't on the same planet as Messi...does that mean he is right. No it doesn't clearly.

Wow, he is so arrogant. Look at that hair and these tattoos. All that fame and money has gone to his head. Probably paid for all this with the stolen tax money.

Yeah that's his only source of income you're probably right

Saying that, it looks terrible, what's with the footballers and dying their hair recently?
