Lionel Messi - Performances

Happy Birthday, legend

This is where his broad skillset really comes out. Once he's gone past a defender or two, the rest are shitting themselves he's going to go all the way and score yet again, yet his eye is always open for the forward pass and the space that opens up for his teammates once defenders start crowding around him.

Football is just a different proposition when he's on the pitch.

Think we finally have proof that Messi is human and its his tiredness that gave him up. In every game at Copa we have the same story, he is great in the first half but then he slowly fades in the second one. Its unbelievable how many matches he played in last year - WC, CL and Spanish Cup all through the final and he plays 90 minutes of every game:wenger:

On the other hand, this was his best (and liveliest) performance in the tournament by a mile so far in my opinion, in a very very physical game, so I'm not sure tiredness is showing -- certainly nothing close to his exhaustion in the ko stages of the WC last year!

Penalty first game, no? The 2-2 with Paraguay. @Bob Loblaw said he played well last night.
You can say he did, his dribbling was breathtaking at times. However he didn't create much. He didn't threaten to score much. He's the most decisive player in world football and yet isn't looking like he's going to decide much this tournament even yesterday.

Thought he played great under exceptional circumstances, it was a ridiculous match overall & a damning indictment of how small time the CONMEBOL is. Painful to watch, and Colombia well & truly an embarrassment - light years from the style & form they showed at the WC

Messi has a different role at this tournament. He's suffering the aggressive mark of every team and he's playing with that. If the ref was good enough, for example, Cuadrado should've got a red card.

It's nothing new to Messi at all, I remember eliminatorias against Peru, Colombia, etc. in the past where he regularly got the shit kicked out of him as well. He seems to thrive more under these circumstances though. The video below was probably his best performance of the previous Copa, and Arévalo Ríos alone probably fouled him around five times :D but as you can see Messi gave his all in that game, never backed down and kept coming, just again lacked that sharpness in his finishing when the (few) opportunities came his way. Very similar to yesterday's performance, except that against Uruguay in 2011 he created more clear chances.

an argentinian was kidnapped last week in Nigeria. Whe he was released he said that Messi saved his life. He explained that the kidnapers thought he was american, and he didnt speak their language, but when he said repeatedly "messi, messi" the level of violence he was being treated diminished

That was actually clever by him, because they didn't speak any English or Spanish, and "Messi" was the only way for him to explain that he's Argentinian. He was lucky though none of them was Cal?.

My god, his dribbling is on another level... Won't see anyone like him again

This guy makes me so proud being argentinian as him.... in a country filled with problems, this guy has the same expressions as me and likes the same food I like (milanesas a la napolitana :D )it's just incredible.

Thank you for choosing to play with Argentina instead of Spain!

Some of ye's might have missed this. A bit of scouting done by yours truly.

Saw Messi a few times for Barcelona last year. Comfortable on the ball, alert and always looking to trigger things. One to watch.
