Lionel Messi - Performances

When he got the ball he looked great as always of course, but he was definitely a lot more subdued then normal. And its not like he has to score, against city he didn't score but he had a great game and everything went through him. Today it was more iniesta and the rest of the team, he played his part of course but wasn't the main man like he usually is.

Another 2 or 3 years of 50+ goal seasons and some titles and he should be considered the greatest ever. Such a joy to watch.

He already is, regardless of his performance tonight; he's a human after all. But, ya, at least a couple more 50+ goal seasons should be great to watch.

They wouldnt win it so easy if not for messi. Him being on the pitch changes juve tactical approach. We had it 2 times in the past where we play an open game and they're all over the park.

So, he's better than ronaldo, pity for ronnie, he did his best up his game and that determination... But messi is just born with that talent, sometimes life's not only about hardwork, it's never fair.

He will surpass Maradona when he retire and we will miss him. Greatest player of our generation

Lucky that Vidal didn't connect with the scissor kick, otherwise that would have been straight red.

Most likely they challenge him at will knowing he'll dodge it 99% of the time.

It's much like the Bale - Jackman duel from the The Prestige, isn't it? Not just their personalities, but their body languages resemble too  Would love to see a morph of the movie poster with these fellas in it! @Olly @jeston

Messi should also get credit for the hardwork and dedication he has showed to be at this level season after season. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't much difference in terms of training load between Ronaldo and Messi.

Can you refrain from provoking people and making these threads even more of a shitstorm? Plus this is the Messi thread, not the Messi v Ronaldo thread.

I'm confident that one day if we all work together and certain posters have no internet access, we will achieve one page of decent posts in here.

Watching the game last night I'm a huge Messi fan I think he's top 2 in the GOAT list and its a coin toss between him and Pelé currently.

Last night he was not on the level of the Bayern game, or of the City game, but he was still better than everybody on the field. I think where you would see a world class player typically on the top of their game, the highest level of their game, that's Messi on a poor night for him.

Juventus had no shame last night losing, any team would have lost that, Barcelona are the best team in the last 10 years which coincides with Messi and his emergence.

Messi did not get on the score sheet but he forced an opening in the Suarez goal, essentially set Neymar free on the third goal and helped with a key pass for the first so he was still tremendous. I am really enjoying watching Iniesta this year again though.

For all of those people who do not like Messi for whatever reason, you have around 3-4 years to watch him at his top level so start enjoying it.

Copa America starts soon, him and Tevez will be fun to watch.

Credit is due since he started adapting his lifestyle to unlock another 10% in his locker, I think with Messi he had won 4 WPOTY and just thought I can eat anything it doesn't matter, but he dipped in forms to around a Ronaldo level and then when Ronaldo starting to win domestic trophies he was voted for.

Not only what he has done off the field but on the field too, I think his new role of playing "total football" has greatly improved him this season, I think he is making Barcelona what they are, Alba, Suarez and Neymar know they can make that run because Messi can put it on a plate 3-4 times a game and that must give them great confidence.

We all know Messi has a higher level than Ronaldo or anyone up to perhaps Pelé which we have limited footage of, but hopefully we're going to see Messi improve even further (frightening to say that).

Yes you're right, his formed dipped a little but I'm sure even during his "I can eat whatever" diet, he was still working hard during training sessions. I just think too often the discussions between the two are reduced to "talent vs hardwork" and I believe Ronaldo has a lot of talent and Messi is a seriously dedicated pro.

I agree, i think both are extremely talented and hardworking - its the only reason why they have been at the top as long as they have. BUT its hard to look past those comparisons.

Messi has the technique over Ronaldo where Ronaldo has the physique over Messi. One can be gained with hard work and the other is only given naturally.

Messi has more than talent over ronaldo. His vision and intelligence is just out of this world.

I mean he has the ability to put it wherever he wants but he also takes almost always the right choice or the best one for the team. And sees plays other people don't see in a matter of seconds.

Yup. don't get me wrong, he don't get where he is without all that, but in the end I guess it's that little "god" given talent that makes out the difference.

This was before finals, now add another assist, key passes, 10 more dribbles.

Anyone who thinks he isn't two levels above anyone else that's ever kicked a ball is deluded. He's beyond ridiculous.

Well it would be strange for me to think that given I've been on this planet for 29 years myself.

Ohh, it's not included in the chart, but he also has the highest number of completed passes in the final third and also highest number of Through balls in CL. You can't be so good in so many different areas by just being another footballer.

Not really, he just has this gen of footie fans in awe. Truth is he has been shocking for Argentina, and has played in a Barca team where anyone from Rivaldo to Ronaldinho does well. Its a two team league where the top two get the best of the TV cash and the rest scrap it out for pubic hair curls. If Messi is the best ever then what about Ronaldo who owned France 98 and lost the final to homeland France, won on two other occassions, is the top scorer, bitched up the dutch, Spanish and Italian leagues including Real AND Barca. What about that? What about the coke head handballer of his day who owned Spain, Italy with a lowly team and WC with Argentina. IMO Messi has a lot to prove. And the final point is that almost any manager does well there winning stuff. End of.

In my opinion Maradona was superior! Messi is great but Maradona was the greatest I've seen. Magnificent in an era where the fouling was brutal.

And when I say a lot to prove I mean he's flopped with his country several times and has never been anywhere else, despite the talent level. Great to watch no doubt. Juve the other day could quite have easily have won IMO.

You're in a small minority there so he and most of the rest of the world will go on talking about him as the greatest regardless of your thoughts.

It's very hard to agree with you, he's decided so many big games, been consistent for over 10 years now and puts out numbers that nobody else has.

The fact is he has nothing to prove at this stage.

I agree to an extent that this generation of football fans lack some sense of perspective but to call him shocking for Argentina is ridiculous. He's going to finish his career as the all-time top scorer for his country and already has the record for most goals scored in a calender year (12), joint with Batigol. He was a long way away from being shocking in the World Cup and it'd hardly be surprising to see him light up the Copa America this summer.

i watched both, and i think messi is better than maradona, and yes, maradona won a world cup while messi didnt, but that isnt the only measure for a footballers greatness
