Lionel Messi - Performances

I'd love it if he changes his mind and comes to play in England (even if it could mean significant damage to United). His greatness deserves a bigger stage and better audience than the hanky-waving transfer muppets in Spain.
Please no. Don't want to endure a rival having a player that good.

And he's playing on just as big a stage in Spain. In his mind, a bigger stage for sure.

I'm talking week in week out. No one really cares about your average La Liga game outside of Spain but every premiership weekend is almost a global sporting event. Even domestically, doubt there'd be an empty seat in a stadium if Messi was in town.

but every premiership weekend is almost a global sporting event.
True if you are talking about South and South East Asia and US to an extent (with the amount of South Asians there, that's a mere extention) but no one gives a flying feck about the Premier League in Spain, France or Italy, for example, let alone the globe.

I think the praise has been going on his whole career.

It's blurted out every game by every commentator really.

Neville said "We're in the presence of greatness" against city which was more than true, then fans, commentators and pundits against Bayern said "It's an honour to be in the stadium to witness him".

I remember his Zaragoza hat trick, he rattled out a list of greats and said "You're just lost for words".

The amount of absurd goals that take your breath away I've lost count of.

Ander Herrera should have done better there

 sure

It's as good a league, and as prestigious. It's marketing isn't as strong in Asia but that's about it.

If the premier league was so incredible all the best footballers wouldn't be playing in Spain.

This is one of the most amazing Messi goals I've ever seen. How can you put that nutmeg at 100 KM/H? HOW CAN YOU CHIP IT IN FRONT OF THE KEEPER? I'ts impossible. For everyone the ball goes out.

And this is my favorite for Argentina, for sure.

That was what, 5 years ago? 22 years old! The way he went pst the first guy, those two touches are as perfect as you will ever get. He has absolutly mastered the finest small details of football.

Btw there is no way he is a humble guy lol, when most people keep calling you the greatest ever, how can you be humble?

Throw in Africa as well and that's a big part of the world.

Come on, I'm not referring to quality. I'm talking about popularity of the league. Best footballers play in Spain because they care about other things more. But despite more expensive ticket prices, average attendances are much higher in England; stadiums are only 70% full in Spain, in England they're 95%(!) and then there's that ridiculous global Prem TV deal. I know there's a tendency to downplay anything English on here (bizarre, given United's an English club) but the English clearly love their football more and the premiership's the most popular league in the world - that much is undeniable ( It's the reason you're on here instead of BarcaCafe).

Bingo.

The premier league is superbly promoted and hence has a bigger reach particularly in Asia. But Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar don't really care if the premier league is more popular in Asia. They prefer Spain because generally the greatest players have played in Spain (hence the Madrid barca prestige factor sadly), and the game there is more technical.

Those factors at the end of the day make it a more attractive place for the very best than the premier league.

I love the premier league, obviously but your posts seemed to show la liga in a terrible light despite it clearly being the destination for the elite players. Like I said, you and me might follow the premier league more, but I doubt for Messi and all these players, the premier league is the big stage, as you initially alluded.

This was actually my favourite moment in that Zaragoza game, all he did was win a penalty, but I liked it because Zaragoza just made it 3-2, the pressure was back on and almost instantly he takes there whole team on, wins the penalty and hands it off to Zlatan who was struggling badly at the time.

This is one of my fav moments of Messi. The simplicity of the dribbling is amazing, gliding past 4 people by just shifting the ball to the exact right position.

I believe Barca were up 5-0 at this point in the match!

Barca are winning 3-2 at that point.

Incredible dribbling speed. He doesn't go past four guys though. I only count two.

Yes, but Zaragoza had just scored twice in 4 minutes (85', 89') to get back in it from 0-3 down, so the momentum was with them at that point. Messi then simply went and won the pen in min 90'.

This one does it for me. Just ridiculous that a team can be set up like that, as so many teams do. The shape is fine, and there's seemingly no real danger. Somehow he leaves them looking all over the place.

One of those Messi goals where you can see the complete fear through the movement of the opposition. A bit like the one against Boateng.

Spare a thought for poor old Jerome, but who can blame him when you're up against this...

For dribbling past multiple players, bit longer but definitely worth a watch.

Maybe from your perspective.

There's also a La Liga one I like, where he starts on the right side of the box. And he just dribbles casually to the left side, before passing it into the goal. All the defenders are fooled into blocking potential shots, unsure of when he's going to pull the trigger. They just dive one after each other.

Anyone remember this one? It's in the goal to the camera's left.
He's scored a few of that kind, but this one was so casual.

Yeah, found it. The one at 7:35.

Like an adult against a bunch of kids.

Don't have good enough Internet to watch the videos linked but one of Messi's best for me is the scoop goal he scored against Valencia. Possibly to complete a hattrick?

Loved his one against Milan too a few years ago. Everyone talking about how Barça might be knocked out after a poor first leg, then bang...Messi scores in minutes and everyone knows Barça will go through. As someone said above, the fear he puts into teams is amazing. PSG shitting themselves when he was subbed on showed that.

For the super hat trick you mean?

This however is my favourite Messi vs. Valencia goal.

I know it's a bit silly to say because they all would've been ridiculous goals at the end of it...but this moment would've been a really incredible goal. Remarkable balance and control when running at break-neck speed and a cheeky chip at the end.

I'm probably forgetting something but around that time when he went on that run of 10 goals in 4 games - 2 in the 2-2 v Almeria, 3 in the 3-0 v Valencia, 2 in the 4-0 against Stuttgart and 3 in the 4-2 against Zaragoza - is the best month of football he's ever played, from what I remember. A one-man team scoring exceptional goals over and over again in such a short space of time.

Yeah, I'd say one of his best months (there was also a great period in 2010/11 culminating in the infamous 5-0 drubbing of Mourinho's RM; and periods in 11/12 where he was just unstoppable). That was March 2010, and two weeks later there was the Arsenal game where he scored four. It's around this period that first mention of him possibly becoming/being an all-time great became quite prominent in the English media. He indeed scored a lot of exceptional goals that season... one of his lesser known ones:

And there was also the chested winner in extra time in a hard-fought CWC final against Estudiantes, which isn't perhaps that special technique-wise, but certainly a fairly unique and epic way of deciding a final.

Doesn't get much better than that, A Mourinho Madrid team in the semi final of the CL and he goes and does what no other player on the planet would be able to do there.

Thats greatness and some people really dont appreciate the talent Messi has because of blind love for the other guy who is not even close to Meei's level.

Just watched all the Youtube vids on this page.

Just lost for words. The best part of his game is there's no complications. Just so amazingly simple and brilliant on the eye.

When you watch some of the slow motion highlight clips it's amazing the number of times he beats his man before even moving the ball, he then seems to simply walk the ball round the unbalanced player. When he slows the play down and fronts up 1 against 1 he is often looking directly at the player almost like a gunslinger psyching out his man and waiting for that chink of weakness to show, and it does show. It's not even like he has a set of honed tricks that will beat a man like say Ronaldo or Okocha. Messi is pure spontaneous wit. It's fecking scary.

The goal against Arsenal, when he completely fooled Almunia in such a tight space  Truly speechless, this fecking touch of his. It's unfair to be this talented.

I think this is still the best Messi clip on YouTube. 1 year old but regardless.

Dribbling, passing, scoring. Everything.

@03:30: He broke his opponent's ankles twice without touching the ball. From the kick off, he has this psychological advantage over his opponents and they're so scared of him, this combo of them being scared of him + his great ability makes all those dribbling videos even amazing to watch.

It's the game where RvP was sent off for kicking the ball into the net after the offside whistle isn't it?

Absolutely love this goal.

Yup. And Bendtner then missed a one-on-one in the last minute that would have put us through!

Back to the good stuff:

messi-goal-barca-milan.gif

The gif doesn't really do it justice, but the way he scores this goal is mind-boggling. Positions his body and feet so well, so quickly, before the most perfect technique places the ball in the top left corner, all while absolutely surrounded by Milan defenders. Amazing.

That goal is very underrated. The first touch he takes in a crowded area to set it, and the way he whips it into the top corner early taking the keeper by surprise. Should also be noted Barca were 2-0 down from the first leg and badly needed that early goal. Big players in big moments n' all that!

No goal and only hit the post, but this is the sort of thing that gets me out of my seat that there just isn't a lot of in the modern game. The ball control here running at top speed is outrageous
