Lionel Messi - Performances

If ever the man needed a big performance it's tonight.

Also agree with an above post, he shouldn't take penalties, he simply isn't very good at them.
 
He is a great player but his work rate has become disgraceful.
Doesn't put any kind of shift in. Don't care how good you are, you have to move.
 
Messi's biggest problem is that he is NOT a leader, not a hmm lets say Stoichkov type of character :lol: In my honest opinion all of the greatest footballers had strong personalities, strong leadership skills. Messi has none..
 
It looks like if he was marking himself wandering around through the middle and offers very little in terms of workrate or at least trying to make some runs so I think it would be worth trying something different next half. Maybe he could find more space if he moves more to the right flank and they could also do with more creative players in the middle.

Sampaoli covering more distance than him until now...


Now being serious it looked like he was starting to pick up the ball the and make some good passes but that mistake by the goalkeeper has killed the momentum for them and now we'll have to see how he (and his teammates) handle the mistake and comeback into the game.
 
His legacy is going to suffer after this. If Iceland wins tomorrow, it is game over for Argentina!

Messi best footballer of all time...except he isn't...Maradona will always be ahead of him.
 
Team aren't exactly helping him, but been very quiet tonight. Hasn't managed to properly influence the game at all.

Massively disappointed in Messi. He's not even trying, his heart's not in it.
 
I know people are going to be put the blame on Messi but no player could save this team. Heck put Maradona and Pele in this team and the ball will never get to them.
 
Turns out you can't always beat a team by yourself.

Argentina do seem woeful all over though.

TBF to Messi when he gets the ball he has like 3 players around him and he has to drop into mf to even get the ball. Argentina are crap. Barely qualified dont understand why ppl all of sudden think they are good.

FFS Cabellero is in goal and cost them the first goal! And lol at Mesa playing. They are horrible.

Same can be said the other way around. He isn't helping the team. He is losing the ball whenever he gets it and is an absolute liability when Argentina is off the ball.

It's a JOKE, Maradona had a worse team and he Single handedly won them World Cup.

I don't agree. Messi is too static while those legends would at least make an effort.
Put Ronaldo up top and they can fortify their midfield without such a defensive liability, it helps protect the back 4 and pushes the opponents back to stop the runs in behind.
That's just Ronaldo, I can't imagine what Pele and Maradonna could do.

I mean that so many posts (you can read them back if you try) say Messis performances are in part, down to a poor squad he has to play with. I'm saying other players are making things happen when it matters in this WC and Modric (for example) scored that himself.... no great pass to him, no tap in, all him.

This current Croatia side is better than the current Argentina mob as an overall side, I'd argue. And while he's been surrounded by quality, there's been plenty of occasions where Messi has elevated abject Barca performances into something more to get them all three points.

I'd still argue his performances in 2014 were slightly overrated - he was very good at points but not quite at his very best overall. But yeah, was a fairly strong WC overall from him.

Ronaldo won the Euros with Portugal which is a greater achievement in my book. In my opinion there shouldn't be a debate on who's had the better international career as it's definitely Ronaldo.

That doesn't necessarily mean that Ronaldo is the greater player as Messi's exploits at the club level are arguably unmatched. But it's a factor.

Ronaldo has dragged Portugal to two Euro Cup finals as far as I remember. In 2004 and in the last euro's. Messi's 2014 World Cup is overrated. He didnt score a single goal after the group stages, and all the decisive games ended in 1-0's and 0-0 due to good defensive contribution. He was (also) invisible in the final.
 
This Argentina side are a shambles. Messi's own disappointing two performances aside, nobody was pulling them anywhere.
 
Hes not been great but dont get the hate. The side as a whole have been poor. Manager needs to be asked serious questions. Doesnt look like a side that has been coached at all
