LGBT issues in Football

Did he deny it on one of his other social media? Because it's unlikely they hacked all of them.

I'm not sure as I haven't got any social media accounts to check, but I assumed from Puyol's reply that it had all the hallmarks of some cruel prank, but apparently some people think he might have done it as a protest against the media talking about his private life. Which would be very very odd.

Not every country is the exact same though is it
Does that matter? I just hate how these threads keep on developing into a weird pissing contest about which countries are cruel towards queer people, but not as cruel as others and therefor better.

Spain as a culture is still quite plagued by racism so wouldn't be surprised if it is still more homophobic than other countries and this type of joke seemed fine to Casillas and Puyol.

Bit of a tangent but I don't think there's much difference between Spain and the likes of the UK

Don't know how accurate it is and I only have personal experience with the UK

Yeah, as if these comments would fool anyone. Typical reaction from homophobs trying to hide it : "why do we care?" "we don't care, we don't dance around annoucing we're straight" blabla. Disgusting.

I think it’s brave from queer people to come off the closet because it means they will live as they please regardless of others opinions. But taking that into consideration, there’s still a lot of people who are homosexual and don’t reveal it because of fear or worse consequences.

Taking that into account, I don’t really care about anyones sexuality at all when it comes to friendship. But if somebody is indeed gay and wants to stay discreet about it, should be something to bear in mind with that person.

Well he deleted the Tweet apparently, seems it really was to taunt the media. Very very stupid from him.

I always thought Casilas came across as a massive fecking bellend. And this just confirms it.

Glad I can add Puyol to the long list of pricks that have played for Barcelona too. Mes que un club indeed.

Pair of absolute weapons.

Was hacked so it's a nothing story, but it's good to see the pitchforks are sharpened and at the ready.

If Casillas thinks this is a joke it's lucky he took up goalkeeping and not comedy

Yeah, right, cause nobody ever used the "I was hacked" excuse when he tweeted something stupid. Cause he couldn't have said it on his other social media (managed by a PR firm) when the whole world was tweeting about it. i call huge BS on that one.

What a nonsense statement that is. He's essentially saying he doesn't approve it anyway. The mandatory disclaimer "I respect everyone" isn't cutting it.

It isn't nonsense at all. He clearly states that due to religious reasons he doesn't agree with homesexuality so would be conflicted wearing a rainbow armband. I'd personally prefer outright honesty than the smirking 'nudge nudge' tweets of Casillas and Puyol.

It's nonsense.
Religion is man made fairytale, homosexuality is natural.
And IF religion was real, and they believe god created everything, "he" also created homosexuality, how can they be against it?

Being honest doesn't make it better.

If a racist person mentions the reason why he is racist, it doesn't mean that he should be given a pass just because he is being honest.
It won't be any better than another racist guy who doesn't confess the reason why is he racist.

He’s free to not wear the arm band, just as we’re free to think he’s a bigot with a thinly veiled excuse for not wanting to do so.

Nonsense statement.

"At least he's being honest". Nah feck that - that makes it no better.

Did not kneeling during that whole shebang make you a racist?
If someone would have said that they weren't taking the knee because they're part of a community that disapproves of people being black, then it'd be hard not to consider them a racist.

What a weird question. What are you really saying?

Thanks.

Another bigoted religious cockwomble. The world would be a much better place if they all just fell off a cliff.

Depends why they didn't kneel. If they think it was not enough, pointless or just "woke" PR then perhaps not. If it was because the religion they chose to follow says black people should go to hell, I'd say yes.

And this dude is happy enough to wear adverts for a gambling firm on his sleeve so I'm going to take his religious convictions with a pinch of salt.

Sorry but with all due respect, Humanity precedes Religion. Religion doesn’t and can’t come before humanity. Religion is for humans, it can’t not encompass all humans and can’t discriminate between humans and if religion can’t change then change the religion. Whatever your beliefs maybe truth must be your guiding factor to dictate your lives how you want to live and it is not bound by words written anywhere in any period of time.

I dunno, you have an assumption in mind most likely so you can go on and spill it, or jog on

There was nothing in his statement that disparaged LGBT people.

I'm disappointed in his stance, but it's as benign of a statement as one can get.

Seems more this year than before players have refused certain gestures of support.

If you choose to follow religious beliefs that preclude you from even making an extremely benign gesture of support for LGBT people then that reflects poorly on both you and those religious beliefs.

Claiming your homophobia is religion-led homophobia isn't a get out of jail free card. Nor does surrounding your statement with empty words of respect change the fact that you clearly have an issue with LGBT people.

He said it was because of his religious beliefs. Are we just going to pretend that the particular religious beliefs he is referring to is not basically "we don't like gay people"?

As long as those beliefs do not lead to actual detrimental actions against gay people, then the actual nature of those beliefs don't interest me (and I get why people may feel different).

He's chosen not to wear a headband. For a stupid reason. And that's that. If he also exclaimed support for ostracizing gay people then it would be a different story.

I get what you're saying, that it seems a bit absolutist - either you're fully on board with us or you're part of the problem. Should he be forced to wear the armband? Of course not. His wider comments seem to imply that he feels doing so would endorse homosexuality, which is something he is banned from doing. That's his right.

I would however counter that by saying people are allowed to tell him they disagree, and some of those people are going to consider his act/comments homophobic.
