Let's all laugh at England

I mean, the irony of foreign fans saying this when literally every country in the world gets overly excited (and rightfully so) when their sports stars do well. Do you also think the streets of Paris were calm when France reached the world cup final?
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/07/16/...aris-celebrations-clashes-intl-spt/index.html

But I guess that is justifiable because they are French.

The only reason why you think it is "just English fans" is because you visit a website (redcafe) where English news is most prominent and are therefore exposed to all the good and all the ugly. If you were to visit a website with a user base largely from another country, the news would be skewed similarly. The best example of that is reddit, where the news is primarily skewed towards America.

See, this is why people won't exclude you from the criticism. Maybe you didn't participate at all the embarassing stuff English people have done and said during this EC, but you choose to ignore it. There has been no other country during this tournament that behaved this way. And I know that it's a minority and everything but still this minority at least during EC2021 was far bigger than those of all the other nations. This is not even debatable. Feel free to point me towards sources for behaviour like this by other nations.

I'll say it again, I'm getting fed up with three lions (What the song used to be called). But holy shit it's funny how it's wound people up for the last 3 years! No foreign people took offence to this song for the first 23 years of it's life.

You claim to understand irony, and then your post devolves into a rant about how awful English people are.

Yes we have some crappy fans and hooligans, although that also isn't part of English exceptionalism. However it's irrelevant to this discussion. I'm not defending that behaviour, but I'm explaining that still today the "Football's coming home" is about hopes and dreams, not expectation or arrogance. You don't have to buy that, which is fine, but that doesn't make it less true, just that you don't understand (and have a preconceived bias against) the people singing it.
To you, you mean. That’s fair

I have not ignored it. But you have ignored the French fans behaviour during the world cup under similar circumstances. It is clear you hate England and that is why you refuse to acknowledge it is a broader issue for all countries.

I mean they do, we are probably the second or third most hated country on the planet.

Historically for good reason, not for a song written by crap comedians in the 90s.

Personally, I'm not really talking about the song but about all the other stuff. Under different circumstances, the song/chant would be interpreted in a much more positive light, I believe. It's actually quite popular over here - but the way things have went it just fits very well into the self-entitled and arrogant image that England has given during this tournament.

It is mental, to be fair I don't even like it that much and wouldn't mind if we scrapped it and got to hear Sweet Caroline more often.

Tbf, as eveyone was quick to tell us england held a lot more games. There is always going to be drunk idiots. it's about keeping that number down.

Feel free to point me towards sources of similar behaviour by the French fans during the WC. And no, I don't hate England. That's a cognitive dissonance on your part.

:D. Ten bucks says that you only said that to make your point seem more intelligent.

To me, and every English fan I've ever met bar a couple (who are those "we've got the best team by miles" idiots).

If you hate England, you aren't gonna have a rational take on the chant or its meaning, which is the case for most people bashing it as "arrogance".

Shocker.

To be fair I think this is referencing one of my posts.

I pointed out that Italian's are notorious for having huge amounts of racist fans. I did so because someone said they were really pleased Italy won last night because of the racist English fans and I was pointing out that this is a weird sentiment, not saying that you should not dislike England. I don't think you should dislike any country for that tbf, dislike the racists in Italy and England in equal measure but just those people.
I didn't know it was your post.
Like, really didn't know.

But yes. I don't like Italy either with the history of racism in football there in recent years, I just know I'll have to deal with less of the shitty stuff when they won as opposed to if England had.
It definitely is unfair, but football is all about emotions in my view, I get happy when United do well and then i celebrate. When the Danes had to struggle against adversity with losing their best player in the first game, in a life threatening situation I assume we all had an emotional moment and all wished Eriksen well, and then got a tiny bit of hope for Denmark because of the story if they had made it all the way (this might not apply to those of you who actually had a team you hoped for already, but since I don't have a national team i follow I was hoping for their story).

So I judge fanbases, countries and clubs by their best and worst as long as it is mainly around football as entertainment. Outside of football i try my best to remove emotions from the equation more, but in football It spices things up and feels natural to me, even if it doesn't make much sense.

 Why this hate England nonsense all the time. People can have opinions without hate ffs.

politicians tweeting it’s coming home. I wonder if they know the lyrics to the song and it’s self depreciating in it’s whole. Or they think football is actually coming home:lol: what do you think

Genuine question: what is it people hate about England fans?

Other than some annoying novelty songs and the god awful marching band they let into to the games, the list is probably:

-Entitled
-Arrogant
-Racist

Literally could be said about sections of fans across the world. Idiots exist everywhere.

It just largely comes from british/irish fans who hate England for (many) historical reasons. The England football team becomes a good outlet for this hate. They would find a way to hate England if they played like angels and knocked the ball about like Brazil '82.

It is what it is.

Having skimmed through the thread, what I'm seeing is a serious case of England fans getting a bit too sensitive and non-England fans getting a bit too over the top with the banter. Or in other words just passionate football fans doing their normal thing.

D'ya really think BoJo and Purity Patel give a shit about the fecking Lighting Seeds? The song is about shitting yourself before a game every one says we're probably going to lose and hoping anyway.

To be fair, remove the "Three Lions" bit and it could be sung by pretty much any football fan.

It's a nice, hopeful football song which has had the chorus line co-opted by a bunch of racists and chancers.

I saw a vid of a massive Italian crowd booting a pizza delivery guy off his moped just the other day. If that isn't the worst crime an Italian could commit, I dunno what is

I know exactly what the song means. I may aswell say it again, I’ve always liked the song! It’s a classic.

Why do you keep confusing the meaning behind the song with this idiotic nature of government and sports stars and who ever the feck else saying it’s coming home without a hint of irony. That is all. Have a nice day :)

The vast majority of people tweeting "It's coming home", including politicians, celebs, etc, were all in on the meme - that it's a hopeful dream.

The "without a hint of irony" is the irony.

All your laughing smilies show is that you simply don't understand the chant.

And we will laugh at them all when their time comes. Today, it's England's time.

Well that’s fine but personally I don’t think you will.

Happy to be proven wrong, but where’s the threads from the last couple of international finals hating the loser?

Piss taking is fine, we’ve all done it, but some of the posts seem to be genuine hate.

England fans really adopt a scouse mentality in defeat, don't they.

It’s a song, petal. Not a chant

People don't speak tons of languages. I wouldn't know what the italians, polish, germans etc sing unless I was told.

90% of the chants from other countries are: "Go (insert country name/colours)!"

Allez les blues (FR)
Hup Holland (HOL)
Hajra Magyarorszag (HU)
Polska Blato Czerwoni (POL)

etc.

Nope. That's also pretty plastic (unless they're from Manchester)..

Choosing a club you have no connection to (I don't buy any of this "oh my great uncle once drove past Manchester" rubbish) because they win lots of trophies is pretty plastic. But at least that's a small level of plastic - maybe like the biodegradable plastic bags.

But choosing a club you have no connection to because they win lots of trophies, even though you hate the country that the club is from? That's like still-killing-fish-in-the-sea-after-3,000-years level of plastic. Why on earth would you choose to support a club in that country* if you hate the country so much? The mind boggles.

Yeah, me watching United as a kid with my family is rubbish. You're the only one that has a real emotional connection to Utd
I guess you're the only one with fond childhood memories of that goal scored in (insert final you watched as a kid) as well.

Apparently I can't support any football club without being plastic, as New Jersey didn't have a professional soccer club when I was born, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the view up there.

I mean he switched because of the homophobic stuff, that’s a pretty good reason to be fair. If he switched to Spain or someone I’d get your point but Canada?

She'

Seems more like the rawk mentality is from the other side

The England fans are just baffled by the odd reasons being given.

What a sad reply. Continue embarrassing yourself.
You should know a thing or two about embarrassing yourself. I am not the one who started off by insulting someone on their first comment and then managed to prove that they have no command of the English language.

It’s a

It’s song, petal. Not a chant

No need to get disrespectful, you're making yourself no better than the "arrogant" fans you're railing against.

And its a song that has become a chant. It's also reduced to a phrase. Semantics, but whatever it wanna call it, you still don't understand how it's used by English fans.

Happy about it. England fans didn't deserve it. They've been a bunch of cnuts this entire tournament. From making fun of a crying little girl, booing during national anthems, stalking and harassing Danish fans after their semifinal win and all this arrogant and entitled "It's coming home" bullshit. Bunch. Of. Cnuts.

You laughed cos I said that people don't understand the verses of the song. At no point did I say foreigners don't understand the song. It not about nationality, it's about cognitive engagement.

I did just say that the chorus has been co-opted by idiots, I didn't say you didn't understand it, I said they did. I was agreeing with you. Why is everyone on this forum so combative these days?!

Talk about making things up. When has anyone ever said this.
I'm describing how it comes across to me outside England. I thought the song title was cool in 1996 because England was welcoming the other nations as guests and it's message to me was 'here it all started, we've got the stadiums, we've got the atmosphere, we're proud to be your hosts'. This time it was more like a claim on the cup an appropriation of the tournement, it's our party now because we need it more than you all. A bit more acknowledgement that England didn't host the tournament but had an exceptional home advantage would have gone down well. When a country hosts the whole tournament the country tends to take pride in welcoming the visitors and showing them a good time and throw them a part. I didn't see much of that, it was more like they were uninvited and unwelcome guests with the English absorbed by themselves. That changes the tone of the song.

A few things.

The whole 'its coming home' was always an ironic song. Until last night though it got pretty serious and rightfully so. We are pretty good in all honesty. If that song did/does actually ruffle your feathers, then you are missing the joke.
To be fair, a lot of people might have not heard the rest of the song, especially anyone who is not from England so all they're hearing is "It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming, football's coming home". In isolation, that sounds pretty arrogant and cocky so you can't really blame people for "missing the joke". Even most people from England probably dont remember the rest of the lyrics.

Doesn't help that certain pundits got overly carried away.

Rio saying during the Italy Spain game that nothing he sees out there will threaten England (despite that probably being one of the highest levels of football played at the tournament). He was banging on about how none of these players would get into the England team (um... the Italy keeper would like to say hello?).

When the dive/soft penalty was given against Denmark, I remember some pundits (Alan Shearer) were saying it was soft and others (Jenas) saying it was stonewall. Then you had idiots like Dixon who when asked if it was a pen or dive, he responds "I don't care" but constantly complaining when other player dive. The double standards from morons like him were annoying.

Gary Neville also constantly up Southgate's arse, like a blind follower, refusing to criticise anything about him, as if he's the next SAF or Pep :wenger:

England fans really adopt a scouse mentality in defeat, don't they.

I mean I’ll be gutted for a bit, but life moves on. You don’t seem to want to answer any of the questions though. I assume you’re from one of Wales, Scotland or Ireland?
