Let's all laugh at England

Bollocks. You definitely have no knowledge of the likes of Lazio ultras, for example. One of the biggest scumbags on the planet.

People seem to forget how recently Lukaku was blatantly a target of racism and nothing was done about it, whilst Inter fans wrote a letter to him saying it's "normal" for Italy.

Lovely reply but you are talking through you arse. Get off your high horse. To your Lazio I give you Millwall. Racism exists in many forms in both countries and to think otherwise is complete nonsense or ignorance.

Millwall don't come close to current Italian ultras, this isn't the 80s.

By the way, most people hating with such vitriol did it the same way when we lost to Villareal in the final. Fans hate Manchester United just as much as England, especially because it's an English club.

And since we don't have the best success in Europe, that gets highlighted even more nowadays.

As I said, they are just more subtle about it in the UK these days. Does not make it any worse. People just hide behind their keyboards these days instead. Racism is Racism. The aftermath of last night is exactly the reason that the players will quite rightly continue to take a knee.

Seriously, what's the big deal in singing about it's coming home? It's just a football chant. Almost every football chant out there, included United's, is grounded in hubris, so why does this trigger everyone so much?

I couldn't tell you a similar chant for any other country, not even Germany. Those three words by themselves reek of entitlement and arrogance (echoing the same arrogance and entitlement routinely displayed by English press and pundits (see that clip of Ferdinand about the other semi final)) and the English just took it way too far, e.g. asking Schmeichel about it at a press conference. When the Brazilians gave the vibe that they were destined by god to win it in 2014, people didn't like that either.

The England fans telling me to feck off and support a different team than Utd exemplify why I wanted Italy to win.

I also don't support my own country (USA). I used to support Mexico, but with the anti-gay shit, I've switched allegiance to glorious Canada.

Maybe once you guys do a mea culpa like the Germans did, give back all the shit you looted, and stop invading other countries, I'll consider supporting the team that has the most United players.

No, it's definitely worse in Italy. The fact that people can get away with fascist salutes, monkey chants and throwing bananas says a lot about acceptance by the general public.

Could you imagine how unbearable it would have been if they had won it. Already planning their 4 day holiday to celebrate. Surprised so many on here were pulled into a false sense of belief. The team were handed home match after home match and had a fairly easy route to the final bar a poor German side.

Football is coming home, nah not anytime soon
Where did Italy and Germany play their group games?
After that, it's down to sheer coincidence where the games were played.
'handed home match after home match' it's the same sort of crap that's been spouted about United for years.

You are ignorant and oblivious to what actually happens in Italian football.

I can’t help but feel Italy relished the chance to take a penalty and England didn’t. I’m not a big fan of machismo, but I think it can help in these pressure situations, to get us focused on the goal. There’s a joy of battle evident in Italy’s willingness to attack as well. Garreth “If we had attacked we might have lost in extra time” Southgate doesn’t have the fighting spirit, and in general it didn’t seem like the England players were spoiling for a chance to take a pen.

I personally don’t see how any United fan couldn’t cheer when Luke smashed in that first goal but the irony of some of the most negative and toxic Ole out cnuts on here lecturing others on support is just too much. feck me
This is what stands out to me. Some of the most vocal and insulting posters to our Manager and some of our players are playing victim now and acting as top reds.

Great thread though.

This is what annoys me. We could replace England with Manchester United in the thread title and the replies would be fitting for RAWK or any other type of forum.

Haha

Millwall….insignificant, rarely seen in the top flight, London club full of prick fans

Lazio….one of the major Italian clubs (and they’re not the only ones-if you were older than 10 you would remember what happened when we played Roma in the 00s)

Read back what you just wrote you absolute bellend.

The English invented football, that’s why it would be going “home”, no?

You simply don't understand the chant, there's no arrogance, it's wishful hopeful thinking. Originally it also related to the tournament being played in England.

Recently its been a tongue in cheek meme, especially in 2018 when we were rubbish and expected nothing.

By all means hate England, but choose a better reason than effectively a big joke you don't understand.

The amount of people who don't seem to realise that "it's come in home" is usually tongue in cheek is fecking astounding to me

Anyone notice Prickford off his line on both pens. The ref was warning him also and bottled it with the retake
No! If there was a penalty that should have been taken again that’s outrageous. It shouldn’t even be up to the ref on the field, VAR should confirm each save before they move on.

Well, seems like the English fans can only dish it out. Act like babies when they get

We (other home nations) revel in your misery as you did in ours.
Only thing is it seems like the English can only give it out and not take it.

Your salty tears taste sweet.

Cry more.

Your team isn’t bringing anything home but sore arses.

Its 55 years and counting.

It's coming home next year. The best national team in the world rightfully used the second most important tournament as a warm up for their coronation as world champions.

Exactly. In 1996 it was good song because England was hosting the tournament, it was like "welcome in the home of the inventors of football" instead of "we deserve it more than you because we're English". Now England had an unfair advantage by getting so many home games and had the number of away fans seriously restricted. So it doesn't only reflect the general sense of entitlement but also to the entitlement to have advantages like that. Just like being pretty lucky with the refereeing throughout the tournament is taken for granted.

England and Brazil are in a league of their own when it comes to chauvinism in sport. In the other nations the chauvinism is strong too, but it's limited by the awareness that it's the same for the other side. The question to Schmeichel showed a total lack of respect and empathy by assuming there's something special about England as a competitor and it's claim to the title a Dane would understand. In general I like BBC coverage but when England is involved it's all powers of accurate observation and analysis are gone.

I'm not a supporter of England but that's from a classic song for the national team for Euro 1996. The title 'Its coming home' is referring to the fact that the tournament was being held in England, which is considered the 'home' of football.

The song was really catchy, even I remembered it though I was 8 during Euro 96, and fans sung it during the tournament. Given how well England did that year, it's become a cult classic and a classic anthem during football tournaments for them. Nothing to do with arrogance at all.

I would support England just for that song but the fans are annoying so they deter me

I fully understand the original meaning of the song. But that's not how it's used [anymore] by a significant and highly visible part of England, for example see the tweets in this post:

Classic self deprecating english humour and not at all a country having a collective mid life crisis.

I'm laughing at England losing but absolutely gutted for Rashford. That was a horrible miss considering he was brought in especially to take a penalty :( Hope he comes back this season stronger because he's certainly a man for big moments.

Really bizarre to me too. I’m sure these same United fans had no issue singing arrogant songs like “we’ll do what we want”, but somehow get offended by its coming home.

I also thought the “it’s coming Rome” stuff, or the jokes before the Denmark game about it never being home were pretty funny. Isn’t that just normal fan banter?

Yep, let’s add another scoop of lasting division and resentment into what is supposed to be a forum for Manchester United fans.

I'm glad the racist bastards showering Saka, Rashford and Sancho with abuse right now get nothing, and that their little nationalist wankfest is cut short. Disgusting excuses for human beings.

Not the OP, but it's fine. Most immigrants I know are solid.

But if an immigrant moved to Burnley, and started supporting Man United, then yeah, that's weird.
Why? They might move to Burnley because of a job. Is it any different to a person from London supporting United?

Cant help but agree with this tbh, even though I’ve spent much of the week defending the banter and cringing at England fans expecting other nations to support us. I’m the first to admit that England as a nation deserve all manner of shit, and that we have a section of terrible fans and banter is part of the game, but there’s way more weird OTT shit in this thread than I’ve seen any “cocky” England fan post over the whole tournament… a lot of genuinely quite nasty stuff from people I thought were sound too.

Eh, let ‘em wear themselves out I guess… at least someone’s enjoying it

I feel that I've replied to you a couple times in the last week, and it's probably because you're a poster where I've always valued your posts and I think you have a good insight on things, and you're a talented guy. And I have no idea how the same person can come out with the bolded

Regarding the bolded, I've been told my national identity is solely based on my country's relationship. to England, that there is no culture, no traditions, without England. That my country is only an extension of England, that we are bitter because England is a superior country. We are England B.

I have seen Irish fans told to get over their anger at the British empire, I have seen Indian fans asked how they personally have been affected by the British empire and why are they complaining (in a thread discussing colonialism) I have seen justifications for a Danish dad being physically attacked in front of his kid. Why Southgate was smart to bring in world war 2 to the discussion after beating Germany, I have seen German posters called Krauts (albeit hilariously misspelt) in this very fecking thread!

If you genuinely believe the bolded then I hope you've just not been very active the past couple weeks and you're not just ignoring what's been posted recently (that is of course the stuff not aimed at England)
