Let’s sign Gareth Bale

Tough guy? You high?

I'm not doing your research for you, it's been discussed a thousand times on here before already.

There u go, in depth analysis. If it was discussed 1000 times it clearly could stand another round. Not too happy about the detouring of the thread so that's it for me on the topic, I'll stick to my guns, superstars carry some of the extra costs but offset it through synergy effects on overall popularity, supporter growth, economy growth, better sponsoring deals and overall allure. I got nothing against you but I don't see this going anywhere. I'm for this signing on mainly sports merits.

@Primativ

Can't see how you will afford him to be honest. He'd either shatter your stringent wage structure (and imagine the knock on effect with the rest of the squad), or would have to take a massive wage cut when he's likely trying to earn his last big career deal.

The numbers just don't add up.

What on earth are you on about?

Go look at numbers of shirts sold year to year and come back when you realise that big signings don't cause much, if any, fluctuation in those numbers.
Ey? Post those numbers in here because as far as I’m aware the latest signing is always the highest selling shirt by far - RVP, Pogba, Sanchez etc will have all generated dozens of millions in shirt sales.

They take up a portion of a pretty steady number.

When RVP signed people got his shirt instead of Rooney's etc. The total sales are fairly consistent.

b: A five-year period of data is seen as vital to overall accuracy as most clubs’ sales will ebb and flow dependent on success and signings, although individual players are often not as influential in sales as some claim.

Would be more than incredible if we took Bale and Ronaldo off Madrids hands, oh wait it would marginalise Lingard and Rashford....

Always been like this- Talks about him leaving due to injury/being dropped and unhappy, then a honeymoon period with some exceptional performances.
After this season, I'm pretty sure he would be another luxury player for us.

Absolutely. Although why did Levy include a buy back clause in the deal he did with Madrid for Bale if he wouldn't be able to finance a deal in the future, i.e. this summer. Sure, United can pay higher wages to Bale than we can, so this all depends on how willing Bale is to negotiate a deal with Spurs. If he really wants to come back to Spurs, I think the potential is there for it to happen. If money is the only motivating factor, he likely won't come to Spurs. If regular football, and familiar comfortable surroundings, CL football, and the chance to finish an unwritten story back with his old club Spurs is appealing to him (i.e. win the PL with Spurs) , then maybe it could happen.

I agree, I think it's really unlikely, and if it's all about one last big payday, he won't be coming to Spurs. You just never know though, he's a wildly rich man, he has 3 or 4 years left at the top. Maybe Spurs in the current situation, which is far more competitive/advanced than the Spurs he left years ago, will be the perfect platform for him?

From your own link:

That's in reference to the claim that Madrid and James Rodriguez sold 350'000 shirts in 2 days, a claim Adidas themselves directly dismissed as false, as to the actual figures they were not divulged.

They clearly state the spanish clubs and Bayern have raised in the mean sales rank to or exceeding our levels.

As for the zero sum assumption you made it probably matters but to stay on top and maximizing the terms of the Adidas deal you need continual refreshing and the 'urge to splurge' for a new Rooney shirt was probably pretty low last few years amongst fans. Raising the sale to a cool 2million is not as trivial as you say for the third leg our economy is based on after match day revenue and TV money.

If you asked rival fans what player they hope we splash £100m+ on this summer, it would be Gareth Bale.

That's 3 interviews he's made similar noises.

Mourinho last year -

And combined with Zidane's comments -

I'm all aboard.

Bale would instantly be the best player in our team and one of the best players in the league. If he’s available, it’s a no brainer.

I'm not sure about singing him tbh. It does sound mad considering how unimaginative we look in attack and considering what he did in that final last night, but surely we won't be able to sign Bale, a left back, a centre back, a central midfielder (I'd actually argue we need two) and potentially a right back?

Also, the guy misses so many games due to injury. It's crazy. I just think we should resist.

Might be doubts about his injury record but feck me, Gareth fecking bale in a united shirt? Yes please, 100%

Mmm, it's what we have squads for. A poster said he played 39 times this year for Madrid, if he manages that with us i have no worries. I honestly think we have the Money to do a full Bale, Sandro, Fred, Aldy, Fabinho. Keep in mind we will ship out a few too

Tempting as he would sort out RW, but I'm VERY wary of his fitness record.

Another potential big money risk? Wow, drooling just at the thought, do it. It'd fit in perfectly with the 'more money than sense' approach under the past 3 manager.

I’m not at all worried about his injury record. Frankly, if he only manages half the games in a season it’d be worth it.

I think if we have any chance of signing him, we should take it even at the cost of an extra central midfielder. This guy will solve so much of the problems we have on our RW and will score goals for us. I'd rather sign Bale and forget about Millinkovic Savic (use Andreas Perreira instead) if we have to decide on 1 big money signing. We can still afford a left back (Sandro/Tierney?), centre back (Alderweireld?), central midfielder (Fred) and right back (Fabinho/Sidibe?) after.

Bale stepped up quite a few times now for Real. Copa Del Rey 13/14, scored the 2-1 against Atletico in 13/14, scored the 2-1 and 3-1 yesterday, scored his pen against Atletico in 15/16.

True, I would rather Bale then Milinkovic savic. Bale at least has the pedigree to back up what will be a ridiculous sum of money. Spending huge on Savic would be dumb after essentially 1 season (and in that season it's not like hes been a 100m player).

Signing Bale will probably end up getting Jose fired - so if this happens its probably Woodwards signing. Jose might have wanted him back in the day but there is no space for him without a drastic change in tactics and personnel- an adaptability I have yet seen except changes we make on a game by game basis.

There is absolutely no way that Sanchez-Lukaku-Bale is going to work in comparison to the simplicity and efficiency of something like two upfront of just Sanchez-Bale.

And there is no possibility we are going to go through a season without:
a) playing a target man
b) without having a winger who purely sticks to the width/touches the line on one side of the pitch
c) the opposing winger has to cut inside predominantly
d) playing the 4231
e) making our wingers do a lot of defensive work
f) making our wingers be be proactive towards the centre forward and then vice cersa

Willian makes sense for our manager because it matches the tactics he knows, loves and wants to reciprocate here. Bale would be mismanaged. He would have to be the main man here - its all well and good playing on the RW when Ronaldo is on the left - but having Sanchez & Lukaku is a different story and there are better ways of getting the best of Bale who would be our best player. Period. No defensive work, no target men, ball much more to feet, support strikers etc

Part of the reason I didn't feel we should sign him in the past is that he didn't seem to want to come. His tone seems different now and it's worth a punt. Hope he stays injury-free.

I'd pay the money even if it was for 30 games a year (I've changed my mind)

special player and would love to see him at Old Trafford

He scored 21 this season and 19 goals the season before last. With that in mind, I don't think the injuries are that much bother.

Are we even sure he's been injured a lot? Seems like a lot of it could be just rumour. Weren't people saying Alderweireld was injury prone but he was dropped because he didn't want to renew his contract? Bale might have not have played as much because Zidane prefers Isco.

He misses 10-15 games a year through injury for the past 3 years. So you can get 40 games out of him.

That being said, Van Persie was 'injury prone' at Arsenal but was fit as a fiddle in 12/13.

Real tried to sell us Morata for 75m before selling him to Chelsea for 60m.

If we go in for Bale, expect to pay 100m. I think our funds are better spent elsewhere. We have much pressing concerns at LB, RB, CM, CB. No point spending half of our budget on a player who barely stays fit.

He would have to force a move and then agree to renegotiating his wages if he wants to join us. Wouldn't pay more than 70m and 250/wk for him given his injuries.

Hes started pretty much 50% of the available games while hes been at Madrid. So obviously he is injury prone. Terrific when he starts, though the one season he managed to stay mostly fit he had his worst season for them and was genuinely bad. Also the issue is how they're all muscular injuries, which is bound to have an effect eventually like what happened to Torres and countless others. To Bales credit though... a slight loss of pace wont change that he has probably the best long range shot in the world, which is a huge weapon to have.

With Alderweireld think it's been a bit of both. Kinda coming round to the idea of getting Bale, was firmly against it for a while because of the cost and his age injuries and all that... but I'd rather spend 100m on Bale and just really manage his fitness and hope he stays fit and can get maybe close to 70% of starts, rather then spending something stupid like that on unproven players like SMS who probably wouldnt have much of an impact compared to what we have. Getting Bale instead of seeing Mata or Lingard start on the right wing would be night and day in terms of impact, not only because bale can be very good but the other two are genuinely awful on the right.

The Independent reports Bale is only interested in joining United if he moved away from Spain but it's unclear if United will meet his wage demands given his injury record.

Also states an attacker isn't United's priority following the signing of Alexis.

Are there genuinely people who don’t want to sign a player who has scored more than 1 every 2 games, scored the winning goal in 3 of the 5 cup finals he’s played, and won more champions leagues in the last 5 years than our club has done in its history?

Have a word with yourself folks.

It won't happen since the PL FFP rules will forbid this. We are allowed to increase our wage by 7m each year. Bale's 600k p/w equates to 30m a year. At 250k p/w, it stills goes way above the cap.

I wasn't keen on him for a while because I wanted us to have a more longer term planning approach rather than signing a 28/29 year old who is injured half of the year for 100m. But I've come round to the idea... hes not a Rooney type that takes a month to get back into form after an injury, still scores and has a big impact whenever he plays, while us under Mourinho wont ever be this great system that will see us hammer teams naturally. We'll always be grinding it out sort of, so having probably the best long range shooter around and someone who can score out of nothing more so then most players (not to mention comparing the impact he would have in comparison to Lingard or Mata on the right ). So yeah, I've come round. Very short term deal, but he'll last probably as long as Mourinho lasts and after that we can hopefully get a more natural attacking system that wont rely on bale.

Lets make no bones about it,Bale would be a sensational signing, will give us pace, width and a cutting edge as well as a serious threat from set pieces,if rumours are correct that we are looking to bring in two big names then Bale and possibly Savic would be absolutely immense IF that happened! Alternatively if Mourinho thinks that we have a genuine chance of signing Bale at the expense of getting Savic then maybe bringing in Fred and Fabinho would make more sense given the figures, signing both Bale and Savic though would be a massive statement of intent

Cost, age and injuries would make this a silly signing.

Glad to see the shirt sales myth is alive and well though.
