Leighton Baines

Maybe its just because his timing and execution of delivery is pretty fecking superb? He takes their set-pieces but he still has to deliver the ball accurately. Misleading that pretty much every attack goes down the left aswell.....Seamus Coleman saw plenty of the ball last year, he just doesn't do as much with it as Baines.

I agree he wouldn't have those stats at United though. Anyone who thinks he can't be an improvement on Evra right now is perhaps clouded by nostalgia (not aimed at you Cina, although I know you would prefer Coentrao.)

There are few, if any, that are saying that Baines isn't better then Evra... but for me. he's not a massive improvement at all - and there are still parts of Evra's game that he does better then Baines.

True. If Baines was 25 I doubt many people would oppose to this signing. At 29 he might play at this level for another 2 or 3 seasons and will need replacing in all likelihood.

This is the crux of it for me.

I'd be excited if he was 25 and very excited if he was 19. The only way I can see it making sense is if Evra has requested to leave and we need a really good stop gap signing before Fabio gets a chance.

I rate Baines, and see him as an improvement on Evra but it depresses me a little that our most likely signing this summer is currently a left back.

He is by far the coolest footballer on earth. Icon indeed. Anyone who can honestly have Miles Kane as his best mate is worthy of signing. feck the football side, we haven't replaced Berbatov yet. We really do have, bar De Gea, the most stereotypical chav infested squad in football.

To be fair, that's a pretty good place to have a pretty good anything!

Fabio Grosso.

I really don't get the Coentrao love-in: Madrid paid €30m for him but he could never establish himself as the undisputed number one left-back there. He's really not that good. Baines' age is a concern but merely being four years younger doesn't make Coentrao a great option.

Baines wouldnt need any time to adapt to premier league either

Fourth Official twitter account has been busy today. Everton have signed Alcaraz and a player from Atletico Madrid. Anyone know about him?

yes, he played for Wigan last season and dislodged Al-Habsi as first choice

He was generally impressive for Wigan. Unfortunately his comical kicking that "assist" Bale would be remembered most.

Good move for him though. Howard, despite still performs, is aging.

He looked a promising keeper from what I saw. Absolute giant too, has to be 6 foot 6.

I'd argue that we already have loads of youngsters with potential in defense. Signing a defender at his peak makes absolute sense, not every signing needs to be long term.

I would argue at £12m you have a fair point, any more is a very expensive option for an area of our team that is hardly the highest priority, particularly with Evra upping his game in the season that has just passed!

It's very rare that we make official moves for a player and don't end up bringing them in. Those against this move may as well just accept it. It's happening.

I'm questioning whether Evra is leaving though as I would have expected Monaco to make things official by now.

Abidal will be some LB cover if needed, he will most likley play at CB. I mentioned it before that after his trouble with his liver and that I think playing fullback might be a little too harsh on his body. I can see both being signed.

LB wasn't a priority when we signed Evra either, we had plenty of options.

Still, didn't work out badly.

Obviously the sum wasn't as big but we still had similar arguments.

Personally I don't give a shit about the money involved. The manager knows what money he has to spend and what areas he wants to strengthen, he also knows what Baines is capable of.

Obviously the money is an issue for a lot of people, but as Pops said above, if Moyes thinks it's a fee that won't interfere with the other targets he wants to buy, then I don't see the problem.

Maybe its a case of the Evra deal is not to be announced from Monaco's side until we are certain we have his replacement signed, sealed and delivered?
Very plausible. I'm sure after last season most of the people who matter will want Evra to stay. Baines was better if we have to get technical but Evra wasn't too far behind.

We'd be mad to let him go if we don't acquire someone to replace him. Evra seems professional enough to understand that and the worst case scenario would be him leaving for nothing at the end of the season (I'm sure his contract is up then). Given his age and contract as it is now, I don't foresee a huge transfer fee anyway.

I'd still rather spend a comparable amount of money on Fabio Coentrao. Not that I don't rate Baines, its just the issue of his age at this point. What if we see an Evra type regression by 2014-15? It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.
Hopefully Fabio to Buttner will be ready to take over if that were to occur.

Well that's bullshit... There were 2 rather high profile cases last summer for example in Lucas and Hazard.

Having said that wrestling Baines off Everton is a different proposition to fighting it out with Europe's big spenders for a top talent, I think we'll seal this one.

We'll sign Baines, i'm pretty sure. But it'll be for a horrendous figure like £18.5m

Still feel we will hold out for a little more than £15 million. Made 4 signings already without selling anyone so we could probably squeeze a bit more out of you, even if it is in installments.

That's more than likely why we would want to squeeze as much as possible from you too. I can't think from the top of my head who we could buy. The only left back i would like is Shaw but it would never happen.

Perhaps Oviedo will get the chance? He was rated very highly before the move and he seems like a kind of player who would thrive as a wing back in Martinez's formation.

Evra is a bit of a strange case to me. If you watch all the goals against us in details - you will notice that our beloved Patrice in some way was involved in quite a few of them. Either by being out of position, losing a tackle or generally being too attack-minded without having proper cover - when we lose the ball.

But he gets away with quite a lot because he has contributed a lot going forward - and the one area I feel he has a clear advantage on Baines, is his ability to play his way out of problems and into an attacking position. It seems no matter what winger we use on the left - he always seems to do well with Evra.

Having Evra is a safe and solid option - but as Baines is almost 4 years younger and is brilliant at crosses and set-pieces - I can surely accept spending a bit of cash on him. But my concern is, like many other, that it's improving a position where improvment is more of a bonus rather than a requirement.
