Leighton Baines

Classic example of an opposition supporter making a statement from the outside looking in and talking out their arse. Sorry duffer, you're usually sound but probably best you stick to topics you know something about!

Please tell me where I am wrong, are Rio, Carrick and Vidic more popular than Evra?

That's certainly not the impression I get on here and from my United supporting friends.

You're both right really. Evra is loved for his character more so than his performances on the pitch these days. Carrick is easily one of the most loved (I think respected is more accurate) players in recent seasons based on performances. Rio and Vidic are equally loved and respected because when they're on form, there still isn't a centre back pairing better than them.

I'd agree with those in this thread who've said that:

* If Evra is set on leaving this summer, then Baines would be an excellent replacement.

* If Evra is not set on leaving, then spending £15m (say) on Baines seem a bit unnecessary when you could instead add that sum to your CM warchest.

And kick the need to replace our 32 year old LB down the road a year?

Fact is we don't really have another realistic option at LB now were Evra to get injured or if the unnatural amount of football he's played in the last couple of years catches up with him.

We all love Evra but getting a few million for him and replacing him now with a player that has at least 3-4 years in him is a sensible move, when you remove sentimentality.

Rio is incredibly popular with United fans. He had his critics for good reason but he's always had his name sung. Vidic has had his own song since day one and it's sung a couple of times every game, Old Trafford adores him. Carrick had a period of questionable form (like Evra) but you see now he's got his own, incredibly popular terrace chant. Evra doesn't have a song but he's always had a good relationship with the fans, he's a likeable player who has captained the club and given good service.

The common link between these players is that they've all played for United during a period of immense success, and they've all had great rapport with the supporters. I just think you've made up this point of view based on very little and it weakens your argument.

The Vidic song, is that the incredibly apt modification of Monster? Don't think I've ever head that sung while I've been at a game, but IIRC, he's usually been injured when I've been to OT.

The "Comes from Serbia" one. Really? I've heard it pretty much every time I've been.

Evra's laziness when tracking back was there for all to see last season, he was better than the two previous campaigns but he was awful defensively at times. I'd rather sign Coentrao because of age and potential but Baines would be an upgrade on Evra.

 I can't help but think of WWE when I hear the word "icon" these days.

BAINES - THE PEOPLE'S CHAMPION.

He's like the Beiber of Everton.

He is too cool for that...

Baines really needs to lend his name to a sauce. "baines" sounds like a tomato-salsa thing, whilst Leighton is what up do with it...

Also, if Rooney leaves Evans could probably play up front, but I'm not sure I'd want him too.

I'm not sure what I've just read to be honest.

Keep Pat and get Shaw.

That seems about right for me. However, we also have Fabio who still has great potential. To say that we have no back-up should Evra get a serious injury seems absurd; we have Fabio and evil-Cleverley, then we have Evans who can also step in as a left fullback if needs be.

To me, Baines isn't an upgrade on Evra - particularly not in defense (his stats are much worse than that of Evra, and every time I see him play that is confirmed - a bit too slow and a bit too weak, nor does he have the aerial presence of Evra either). He has great crosses though and creates a bunch of chances, so he is probably a bit better than Evra going forwards. All in all, not an upgrade, but if Evra wants to go back to Monaco, then it's a decent buy. If Moyes is pushing Evra out the door, he is getting me just a wee bit annoyed already.

Wonder if Baines was the player Moyes refereed to when stating he'd do his utmost to sign someone before the team go on tour.

If Evra is really leaving, then I'll love to see Baines with us. Always admired him. Talented footballer who can defend as well as attack, and really is an excellent professional. You don't really hear a peep from him off the field. Plus he has old-school hair - doesn't feck about with it. A tidy footballer.

Our set pieces will improve greatly too! We might miss Pat's pace down the left, but Baines ain't no slouch. Plus his passes are most likely superior to Pat's. Still unfortunate considering Evra is coming off his best season for a while - but if he really wants to go, then I'd much prefer us going for Baines than plonking for Fabio just yet.

He's the best left back in the Premier League. Can't really argue with the move, assuming Evra's moving on. Also, I hope it's not detrimental to Fabio's development.

Makes sense. In PFA team of the year in 11/12 and 12/13, so his peers think he has been the best left back in England for the last 2 years.

I'd still rather spend a comparable amount of money on Fabio Coentrao. Not that I don't rate Baines, its just the issue of his age at this point. What if we see an Evra type regression by 2014-15? It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Monaco just signed Abidal; he probably won't start but it's strange signing a 32 and a 33 year old for one position, then again it is Monaco.

Abidal can play centre back, that's were Monaco will utilize him I'd imagine.

feck Baines.

We need to be loyal to Thiago and spend our maximum time in that thread. What kind of message is this sending to Mazinho.
