Leighton Baines

You don't think he's worth £7M? On the basis that he's not as good as Enrique or Clichy that's probably true. He certainly isn't worth any more.

By the way I'll be surprised if fabio ever becomes first team regular, there I said it.
I love rafael though. I hope I'm wrong about fabio.

He won't at the rate he is progressing, that's where I agree with a loan. On the other hand, if we sign another left back I can't see him staying. When does his contract finish?

He will probably be keen on first team football and a shot of getting into the Brazil squad for the WC, which he won't as Evra's occasional understudy. I guess the only way you could conceivably get him to renew next year is if he has been given a shot at that, otherwise he is a goner and Rafael eventually along with him.

Apparently Moyes has said if we sell Baines he will also leave. Speculation that it is a bluff for Fellaini (most Everton fans believe one of Fellaini or Baines are likely to leave or be bid for this summer).

Well i know which one i think would be of more benefit to us, and it certainly isn't Baines! He would be a good fill in if Evra was injured, but he isn't and buying him will just prevent Fabio from getting a chance. Pointless imo.

Being willing to walk if Baines goes just shows how good hes been for them compared to their other players

Driving up the price.

If he got 15m for Baines he wouldn't leave at all.

If we got 15m for Baines we would only have around 5m to actually spend in my opinion which would only be enough for Pienaar. We'd want around 20m so we could purchase a replacement LB aswell as another signing (Pienaar).

But if you offered us Fabio on loan and 15m i'd take it.

It would be a great move for Fabio if he was first choice. I think he would really kick on at Everton under Moyes.

Would be a great deal for you lot, but i'd prefer we actually just keep Fabio and play him more often than spend all that on a 28 year old.

Agreed. Only Fabio's injury record would make me hesitate giving him a more prominent role in our defence (assuming the other three places are more stable i.e. Rafael---Vidic/Smalling---Rio/Evans) with Carrick sat in front, allowing us to give Fabio some more time at left-back.

Still not sold on the need for Baines, nevermind at the price quoted.

no more scousers at utd. Ideally we would have a 'no-scouse' policy that somewhat was like bilbao's 'basque-only' policy.

It's not ideal but not to concerning if they do the job, the last couple have been great successes for United. I actually believe Baines would be much better than Evra next season as he has been on a very steady decline.

I still wouldn't pay 20m for him though, and I do like the idea of Fabio going the other way on loan if we do insist on loaning him out.

We don't need a left back, at all.

I dont understand all the love-in for Fabio, he has shown very little yet apart from a tendancy to get consistently injured!

He also had a great run in the team at the end of the season two seasons ago It culminated in a very good performance in the Champions League final. People forget that run, but he was very good.

Not right now you don't. It's unfortunate that Baines is 27 tbh, if he was then this move would be very sensible. In the next two years you will definitely need a new left back, be it back up to fabio or as a first team player and Baines at 29 would be too old to spend 15 million on at that time. At 27 you can still get 5 solid years.

There's a lot of talk in this thread about Baines' supposedly lack of pace.

What's your take on it?

I don't think he is lacking in pace. His pace is just average and something in his game which is probably pointed out as a weakness as it may falter him in his defensive duties which he's suspect like Evra but less so imo. Evra has the problem of letting people get by him but then seemingly looking like he can't be fecked running back so just jogs, at least Baines attempts to get back. But tbh having average pace is nothing to be ashamed with when you have wingers in the PL as quick as Walcott/Lennon etc.

I agree. I think since there are a few left backs around now with tremendous pace (Cole, Evra (lost a yard now?) and Clichy) people think that anything slower is unacceptable.

most of Fabios games have been at RB for us so far

It where he has played best when he got a run towards the end of the 2010/11 season. Also we have no left footed winger. Two right footers on the left side has its disadvantages.

I really don't understand the point of this transfer. Is Fabio ever going to get a shot in the main team or not? Because he's better than Baines, that's for sure. I realise we need cover for Evra while Fabio is on loan and I also realise Fabio needs play time but what's going to happen after Fabio's loan? What's the point in Baines?
