Leighton Baines

Nope but well done to Arsene for not finding a way to hold on to Yaya in some capacity. What a difference he would have made for a few years.
If you can't get a work permit you're a bit buggered - we'd have had di Maria as well.

I'd take him if he was 5 years younger. But at 28 he'd really only be at the top of his powers for 2-3 years. For 12 million I really don't see the point.

Agreed. As others have said, the left back we sign needs to be either already better than Evra to replace him in the team. Or someone younger who is already good enough to come in gradually, before taking over the reins in the next couple of seasons.

Baines doesn't really fit either of those categories. It is unlikely that he would come in ahead of Evra, so that could only indicate an occasional back up role, so where does that leave Fabio?

Makes little sense to me either, however i try and slice it.

Talk of this as being pretty much a done deal.

MEN have ran with it as there back page spread - which means feck all obviously.

However, there have been murmurs for a week and a few resident ITK's (ha) on other site's reckon it's a goer.

Not sure on my opinion on it.

Any clue how much?

15 million for a back up, silly if true. Already said if we're looking to bring in a full back he should be someone young and cheap.

Agreed, either that or be done with Evra, otherwise it makes zero sense. So much money that could certainly be better spent.

If Evra's on his way out due to his lacklustre season then it makes sense.

15 million!

Not exactly value, but in-keeping with other price tags of 'better players from average sides' ala Ashley young, and Stewart Downing.

That is madness

If this is confirmed, i reckon that's our transfer business done. Probably a few more million on Nick Powell and that's that, then we'll be waiting to see who will be buying the likes of Berbatov

Evra's aging, next year he'll turn 32. IMO, he still has a couple of good seasons in him but we have to think about the future.

Another way of putting it..
Evra was 30 at the end (last day) of the season.
He'll be 32 next year and 33 the year after.. so what? he has a good 3-4 years in him.

If the deal is confirmed it does give United competition and cover in a needed area.

Baines would not be my first choice but it's a transfer which improves the squad. If Baines cannot dislodge Evra he is still a much better left back than anyone else in the squad at the present.

I'd be happy with this if we could sign an established central midfielder as well to top off Kagawa and Baines.

So is Baines going to get the same number of games like Fabio did last season (which was about 3?), considering Evra was almost ever-present in the team?

I'm guessing they'd be much more rotation in that role, and I'm not sure I like that in defence, we already do that too much at right back.

If SAF has given up on Evra then I'd get it, but as back-up/cover, surely we'd be better to stick with Fabio, a player SAF rated high enough to start the CL final.

I've no idea but he's likely to be much less of a defensive liability than Fabio so will probably play more games.

We've been incredibly lucky that Evra is so rarely injured. Seems prudent to have decent cover and I think the competition/opportunities for rest could also help get the most out of Evra.

But 15m on a stop gap, just seems excessive.

Especially when he can only provide cover for one position. We usually go for versatile players who can do a job in a number of different roles. It would be extremely unlikely to see both Evra and Baines in the same starting 11.

If both got equal gametime you're lookin at about 25 games, which is a bit of a waste almost when both are used to playing double that every season.

Cross posting from the Twitter thread -

I just checked Evra's stats, he's played between 47-51 games each of the last 5 seasons for us, not including internationals. It's a pretty insane number. I would guess most of our square average around 40 games at most. If Evra goes down to 30 and Baines 20 that would logically make sense in terms of keeping the squad fresh and the competition up, but is £12m on a backup LB money well spent? Questionable. However, we're talking short term there. Evra may have it in the back of his mind to call it quits soon (or at least go back home for the end of his career), so getting in a replacement now seems prudent. It would also give Fabio more time to develop.

I swear I won't moan one little bit about this transfer if we just buy a fecking midfielder first.

This too, it reeks of the Young saga last summer where the stories just kept coming in but not many were overly excited about the deal because other parts of the squad needed more strengthening.

Perhaps Evra will be sold? PSG could do with him and would probably pay us a fair price.

On Baines #MUFC link, #EFC have had no contact at all from Utd, he's valued at £20m and Utd have signed just one 27+yr old for £ in 15yrs

We need a new left back.. If Everton think they are going to get £20m for him they can stay broke.

Thats more like it.
Do not want.

City could do with him with Kolarov leaving.

I'd have Baines ahead of Evra next season, possibly with some rest time he can get back to his former self but he is not getting any younger. I'm suprised by a lot of comments on here think people are playing down Baines because he is coming from Everton (a bit like when we signed Valencia from Wigan) and people talking up Evra are remembering his performances from a few years ago and obviously not paid much attention to his performances in the last 18-24 month where I think it's pretty obvious he has been on a very steady decline forever getting ripped, caught out of position and usually leaving the left sided centre half very exposed.

With a young talented Fabio still looking for experience on loan I think a experienced Baines is a great move & like I say who knows maybe a bit of compitition and not playing every match may get Evra moving up another gear again.

Only would be in favour of this if the cost was around 10m otherwise it's too much considering Fabio's still on the books.
