Leighton Baines

His free kicks are another string to his bow. I'd have him for £10-12m. Thing is, like Spurs, Everton seem to always hold us to ransom.

Is Rooney not the only player we've signed from them in the last 20 years or so?

Are we looking to sell Evra? Makes little sense to have two senior players(specialists no less) competing for the same position.

I'd have Baines ahead of Evra next season, possibly with some rest time he can get back to his former self but he is not getting any younger. I'm suprised by a lot of comments on here think people are playing down Baines because he is coming from Everton

I don't see many talking down Baines, most just think it's a lot of money for his age and as an alternative to Evra.

Really is that why you would sign anyone? Only if you are selling someone in that same position?

No, but we hardly need two established left-backs, do we? One established one one young one would do just fine.

Completely agree. He would cost a fair whack - and what's the point when you have Evra? You have other positions which need to be improved far more than the LB slot...

A non-story, won't happen.

So the websites are back on Baines again. Supposedly we are offering Park or one of the twins on a loan to sweeten the deal.

Personally I'm in favor of going for Baines as it would really strengthen the team.

Here are a few reasons in no particular order:

(1) Evra is too good for Fabio to get the playing time he needs.
(2) Then again, Evra's form has dipped, and he could use a good push.
(3) Baines takes a wonderful free kick
(4) He counts against the homegrown rule.
(5) Couldn't Baines or Evra be used as a right back in a pinch?
(6) You can never have enough left footed players.

No chance we're sending Rafael on-loan!

Decent, but given his age and lack of speed i'm not sure how he's THAT much better then Evra. We need a Jordi Alba to be quite honest. He's far more talented and at an age where even if we do end up investing 15 million it'll pay off because Evra will finally have some genuine competition for his position.

Jordi Alba at more or less the same price as Baines is a lot better option. I wouldn't mind us signing Baines as he is a good back-up, but he is not a long-term option and he will be too expensive.

And I question his defensive abilities - even if his contribution offensively probably outweighs that in 4 out of 5 matches

OK jordi alba might be better but are you sure he wants to come and would he choose us over barcelona?

He's Catalan, a Barca youth product and Barca are better then us.

I'm thinking "no".

Same here. So it's useless saying that Alba is better at the same price if we have no chance of signing him.

My impression is that people over here pass judgement on transfers assuming that in order to sign a player you only need to agree to pay the transfer fee requested. Other aspects like player preferences, club internal politics, relationship between the two clubs and the murky role of agent/s tend to be ignored - tbf perhaps because most of us dont have lot of info about that.

Didn't we GIVE them Darren Gibson. I think they owe us one.

I have mixed feelings on this. I don't put the player's quality into question. Baines is a great full back. However, someone like Baines is too good, too old and too costly to act as cover. I suspect that if we do sign him, then it will be the beginning of the end of Evra's career at OT.

I am not saying he would choose us over Barca - but quite a lot of reports claim that Barca aren't willing to match the price Valencia want for him - and it can't hurt to try. And even if Alba turns us down - I am sure there are other leftbacks out there who can match Baines who are both cheaper and younger

Baines may actually be £20 million's worth to Everton, such is the contribution he makes to that team. We obviously shouldnt pay it though

I'll be surprised if Everton refuse a 15m bid for Baines.

6 million and Fabio on loan for 2 years would be a nice deal for all concerned. :)

I really don't rate him to be honest. He's decent enough but I don't think he belongs at a club like United. My view of him may be skewed by Stewart Downing mauling him towards the end of the season though.

I still don't understand why we don't just give Fabio more chances. I'd rather he gets games than spend money on someone like Baines. Alaba on the other hand...

I somewhat agree with the Fabio thing. I can understand Sir Alex wants him to get more experience and play more. But why not do that with us? As much as we all love Evra, we can admit he hasn't had the best form over the last year.

Wouldn't it be best to keep Fabio with us and play him more, thus giving Evra a rest as well (which I think he needs at times).

Jordi Alba would be a fantastic signing, he's brilliant! I'd heard months and months ago on Revista that an agreement was pretty much all in place for him to go Barcelona though? Can't see us signing him unfortunately for us.

Fabio needs games though and I think we've seen since his time he's not really featured much, even when fit and even when Evra is clearly having a bad run of form or just fatigued. A year's loan might be the best thing for him. Although that does mean we need to bring someone else in for back up.

Not Baines though please.

All in all, I simply don't understand the Fabio loan thing

currently he is behind Rafael in development, who himself is error prone, in tight league situations like this season we cant afford to make such mistakes, Fergie won't risk him, like he did with rafael, he would rather he play regularly in a smaller team with less pressure, maybe a 'two birds with one stone' situation, we buy Baines you can have Fabio for a year or so.

Baines would compete with evra but also give us the security to rest/drop evra when he continues bad form, as for now he has hardly rested properly for a couple of seasons, fergie said he's captain because he plays most games.

By the way I'll be surprised if fabio ever becomes first team regular, there I said it.
I love rafael though. I hope I'm wrong about fabio.
