Television Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

He's awful.

Probably convinced more people to vote for Trump than vice versa.

He can be pretty condescending and the comedians bashing the Republicans and telling the audience what they want to hear can be annoying but I doubt many voted against them. More likely that Trump supporters ignored them and Clinton supporters thought it was hilarious. Most in the middle probably weren't too bothered.

I liked the Bugle. Liked him as a correspondent on the daily show.
Not a huge fan of his current show.

I guess its fine till a certain level.. but stepping up to Jon Stewart like levels is pretty hard.

First and foremost he is making comedy/entertainment. Not everybody will find him entertaining, which is normal. The journalistic part of his program is well researched and argued.
Satire/political comedy is almost always pointed at someone. We shouldn't go down the road, where this is already considered so offensive, that it is a problem. That is precisely where parts of the left are going with their safe-spaces and all this crap.

I enjoy his show more than the last years of the daily show, where Jon Stewart simply repeated the same few jokes and the interviews were always horrible.
Oliver's stand-up routines are not particularly great, but they are fortunately just a small part of the program. One of the best political comedy shows out there.

Are you people saying citizens voted for trump to get back at John Oliver?

I like his show and felt his show was fantastic, but the more you think about it, I feel his show gets far too biased towards the 'correct' western opinions. I agree with most of what he says, but I want to hear stuff that I don't know a lot about. Say, the good stuff that has been done by Trump if any. The reason why some of the laws, that he criticizes, were introduced and the good it may have bought and so on

Very important part of what he does. Every episode he goes into detail about different issues in very good depth and detail and he uses comedy to keep people attentive to otherwise dull detailed information. That is the reason to watch his show, not to watch him bash Trump and Republicans again and again.

I'll leave this here.

Particularly the bit about net neutrality I believe did quite a bit.

I usually enjoy his show but the bolded part above are particularly impressive.

I can see why people dislike Oliver himself. I find him quite annoying at times, but that 'funny' post is a gross simplification of the show which, sometimes despite Oliver, is brilliantly made and very enjoyable.

He's show is the only talking show I watch at times. He's an arrogant prick, but he's funny at times.

Last week the 'do it' with Trump was extremely hilarious. Also, the Brexit song

The finale was excellent, the Feck you 2016 segment felt so right. Can't understand the backlash against him, of course you can dislike him and find him unfunny, but saying that he may have convinced more people to vote for Trump than the opposite is daft, or if it's true, reflects poorly on the people you're talking about rather than on him. His show is well made, informative on many issues, and he can't be blamed for taking a stand against Trump (imo). Unless I'm mistaken, everything they air is fact checked and they go into a quite impressive level of detail for a lot of their pieces.

My sentiment exactly. "feck 2016". Only thing is 2017 is going to be a lot worse.

Oliver is awesome. Trump can go feck himself. Hopefully the former continues to destroy the scumbag latter.

Continue to destroy? Trump, much like Janice in accounting, don't give a feck.

Oliver is good at preaching to the choir.. And he'll continue to do that.

Trump doesn't give a feck about a woman's consent either. That matters little.

It's the Ice Age, where people still visit 4chan

I didn't even get that post. I mean it's clearly not something John Oliver said and if it is supposed to be a spoof, then it was kind of poor.
 you have to laugh or you would cry.

I like him, for a scouser he is enjoyable enough

Yeah he is very entertaining and at the same time informative. I would rather watch him than CNN and all

Not being a regular viewer of these shouty, 'look at me' political talk shows, i have a few questions/observations.

On both John Oliver's and Bill Maher's programs this week, either the host or a panellist has made a direct plea for people to subscribe to online newspapers. Presumably there is some interchange between these media, as well as shared sponsors/advertisement. Did this sit well with the rest of you?

Additionally, i would be interested to know if either of them have done segments on NAFTA/TPP, and the economic conditions on the ground in some of these states? Seriously though, and not in the light of taking the piss out of the residents. I should of supposed that the accepted position was to keep relatively quiet.

Not a big viewer of either show but are they not more political satire than straight up political commentary?

Bill Maher's show format makes it tough to talk about a single focused issue, but John Oliver has done a few shows that impact the poor white communities like the prescription drug abuse. He has a progressive agenda but he has not tried to protect the government vociferously

They're both on HBO so have no sponsors/advertisers to worry about.

He is essentially the true heir to Jon Stewart. I like Trevor Noah but he just doesnt do it as well.
