Television Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

I've never seen any of the shows so often mentioned on the Cafe, including that of Jon Stewart, but the format, judging from the clips above, is that the host lances the boil of his spite with a smug diatribe against the evil right, salted with the occasional joke to give the liberal audience a chance to laugh at the stupid people who disagree with them.

A perfect match for liberal psychology. It's not surprising the shows are popular.

He is essentially the true heir to Jon Stewart. I like Trevor Noah but he just doesnt do it as well.
I generally watch him, Trevor Noah, Samantha Hill and Stephen Colbert. I would say John Oliver, Hill, Noah , Colbert in terms of excellence

Spoken like a true conservative who sticks to news sources that support your point of view, and dismisses the other view point judging by a few clips in short notice. It is like watching the youtube highlights of a player and then condemning him later.

What can I say? I stubbed my toe getting out of bed this morning. It's still painful. :(

Not being a regular viewer of these shouty, 'look at me' political talk shows, i have a few questions/observations.

On both John Oliver's and Bill Maher's programs this week, either the host or a panellist has made a direct plea for people to subscribe to online newspapers. Presumably there is some interchange between these media, as well as shared sponsors/advertisement. Did this sit well with the rest of you?

Additionally, i would be interested to know if either of them have done segments on NAFTA/TPP, and the economic conditions on the ground in some of these states? Seriously though, and not in the light of taking the piss out of the residents. I should of supposed that the accepted position was to keep relatively quiet.

I haven't seen it on Olivers yet as I haven't seen the episode, but on Maher's show it came across to me as 'get your news source from an institution that cites reputable sources rather than your friends on Facebook and ITK's on Twitter' which is a great idea and proposition.

Trever Noah is just a bit meh. His delivery is nowhere near as good as Stewart's, which is a little surprising for a professional stand-up comedian.

Also think the writing on the show has gone downhill by quite a distance.

Goddam liberal asshole trying to encourage protection of minority rights.

That's exactly what Oliver was encouraging, subscriptions to real sources to contribute to proper journalist oversight.

He also encouraged donations to a number of awful organisations such as planned parenthood, the centre for reproductive rights, the natural resources defence council, the international refugee assistance project, the NAACP defence fund, the Trevor project (LGBT rights) and the Mexican American legal defence and education fund.

What a bastard.

Oliver openly said on a segment before that they're reliant on the media for a lot of their facts and sources for their segments so it's obviously important to them that it's kept intact.

I understand the criticism but I still enjoy the show. Yeah the 'Janice from accounting' style jokes are a bit cringe at times but I've learned loads about how specific things work and the reasons for them due to watching his show.

TBF, the format isnt wrong here. The Janice part especially where he just goes overboard is just that, overboard.
Saying that I like listening to him and watching his stuff. And hes quite educational with nicely researched pieces. And he is funny for the most part.

It's not banned. I cant see BBC iPlayer from outside the UK either. HBO doesnt release all content for all regions.
They occasionally put out full episodes... but most of them are not available worldwide.
They make money by selling subscriptions, not ads.
Why would they give away their content for free?

Any idea why the video is banned worldwide?
Its not banned. Its the full episode with hbo logo and everything which is why they dont show it outside US. Normally only a segment is uploaded online which is available to most countries. Even those are restricted in some contries due to broadcasting rights. Thats all there is to it. SNL is not available in India for example.

anyone remember the episode on NFL stadiums and there was a rap song included (for SAn Diego Chargers who were threatening to leave SD)"san diego, second largest city" which Oliver made fun of?

That team just moved to LA :p

I like the show a lot, but was getting really annoyed by how partisan it was getting.

The main pieces of the show are very well done and researched (as noted here before), and deserve a lot of praise. I know it's a comedy and all, I feel he's trying to reach Jon Stewart level of critique, but he's way out of his league.

I don't get what people see in Noah, it's kinda sad to see him in Jon's chair. But Colbert really went dowhill.

He a lot of times was better than the Daily Show, but now without his character, it's not remotely as good

I actually saw TDS with Trevor Noah the other day and didn't think he or it was great.

I really like Trevor Noah but I was a bit confused as to how he was ever going to fit in on the Daily Show (to be honest, I think he's a bit too high brow for it) and from the little bits I've seen it doesn't look to me like it's working.

Whoever wrote this has clearly seen quite a lot of Oliver's show (it's rather accurately referencing aspects of his style and running jokes).

Besides possibly masochism, I'm not sure why they would've watched so much of a comedy show they seem to really dislike. Or are they actually a fan but like to criticise it because people on these image boards are bored and try to be controversial for attention?

Just saw this is back on February 12th. Will be interesting to see how he handles the Trump presidency.

Not well considering his last episode was practically a public appeal for money to different causes. He stopped just short of "Go home and hide" but the tone wasn't far off.

Yep, he's quite awful.

I think Jon Stewart quitting the Daily Show before this election was the biggest missed opportunity in modern televisions. Just thinking of how he would have ripped Trump apart takes me to a happy place.

#Stewart2020

Giving Noah a run at an election was the best way to hand over, I agree he hasn't been great though, the pundits are weaker too.

I haven't missed a single episode of The Daily Show for well over a decade. I'm happy enough to stick with Trevor Noah as a host, but he's a massive step down from Stewart.

Colbert's a fecking genius, though. He's had to dull his edge since taking over The Late Show, but he cuts through bullshit better than anybody, imo. It's too bad it's been watered down. I reckon he could have filled Oliver's HBO slot with significantly more intelligence and humour.

Yeah, Noah has been a let down, but it's kinda expected when you take over from Stewart. It's like Fergie to Moyes step-down, even though not half as bad as that.
Colbert though, I think he's the wrong guy for Late Show. Often he's not comfortable with his guest, or he failed to make them comfortable.
Anybody like Myers show? I think he's great. His A closer look segment is the closest thing to Oliver LWT main segment

It's back. Thought the first episode was really good.

Found the whole Trump getting his news from TV and them confirming each other bubble thing quite interesting and the adverts on shows he watches is a fun idea.

Last amazing person I admire Tonight with Johnny Trigger Warning

Brilliant its returned and the trump handshake segment give me a good laugh.
