Television Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Best one yet.

The song at the end.

Ahh excellent, I wondered if he'd cover Brexit this week.

Not gonna watch that, will watch the full show when I get home but looking forward to his view!

@Cina

Watched the episode where he talks about the NRA and the influence they have, found that a funny episode.

I always wondered about those campaign songs. Still not entirely clear why artists just don't sue them to set a precedent.

This week's episode was amazing. I was both laughing and going "what the feck" at the RNC segment.
Was going to say pretty much exactly this, it was hilarious and scary at the same time.

The song at the end though

That interview segment in which politician completely ignored the facts and put his whole emphasis on faith was absolutely incredible.

'So supporting Liverpool was very much not a choice' we understand John.

Also quite fitting that the pic in the background when the text says 'LFC fan' is John Oliver next to a unicorn.

This show is good, but I find Samantha Bee's shows better. MY favorite political satire show since Stewart called it a day.

I don't know, the few clips I watched Bee is very "in your face". Maybe that's why I've always liked Stephen Colbert playing Stephen Colbert better.

I vaguely remember him doing it on Mock the Week - was largely unnoticeable. To be honest, I remember him mainly from the Bugle podcast with Andy Zaltzman but I can't remember if he started that before or after he joined the Daily Show.

Don't know her. Do you have a few good clips you could post?

Here are a couple:

The show is called Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. It has it's own youtube channel.

I think that is the point, it's called "Full Frontal with...". She is aggravated, unabashed & in your face; almost ranting. The content is well researched and the jokes are subtle. I quite enjoy it. I can also see how some people might find it annoying.

I find it better than Maher's conceited 'I am an unmarried, pot smoking, California hippie and if you are not with me you are a rube' spiel and Oliver's formulaic jokes and delivery.

I think that John Oliver became too caricature now, always shouting and swearing, but this one is on another level. So feigned

Sounded genuinely affected by Trump's nomination and didn't even bother about trying to sound funny.
Yeah he seems really fed up of constantly showing us how utterly awful the man is and yet it doing nothing and him growing stronger and stronger. Almost sounded like a defeated man last night.

I did love the "Holy shit, he used a leaflet for the constitution as a middle finger" bit though

Is it a British thing to not like a little bit of shouting and swearing? I'm genuinely curious because I don't think John Oliver is too caricature haha

I'm not British but I found it appalling when the shouting and swearing isn't genuine and is used just for a shock/comical effect. It's funny the first time, less so the second - but when you know that there would be affectation in every episode it loses all the comical value

Holy hell, just watched it now and yea very much this.

At the end especially, when talking about Trump's response to Khizr Khan, he just seemed genuinely angry and even upset at the state of affairs. Understandably as well I might add.

He looked like he was about to tear up, really highlights how absurd it all is.
