Lassana Diarra

Mahamadou Diarra: £6.5M Real Madrid Hardman Alerts Arsenal & Manchester Utd

Reports in the Spanish and English press have linked Real Madrid’s Defensive anchorman Mahamadou Diarra with a move away from the Bernabeu with both Arsenal and Manchester United ready to make their move. However, before the Real Madrid powerhouse leaves the club, he is set to have showdown talks with new coach Jose Mourinho. The player’s agent Frederic Guerra revealed to the Sunday Mirror, “Diarra will sit down and listen to whether the new manager has any plans for him before making a decision.

“We have interest from England and France, so if he is not going to get games at Real he will leave.”

The 6 ft man mountain missed has had an injury-hit two seasons but despite returning to fitness during the last campaign, Diarra struggled to break back into the first team. He has made just 11 league starts in the past two seasons with 13 substitute appearances including eleven in 2009/10. The Mali international is set to be sold for a knockdown fee of £6.5m as the club look to recoup some funds following the huge spending spree Real Madrid have embarked on. Real have Fernando Gago and Lassana Diarra to play the defensive midfield role which means they are willing to offload the Malian with Manchester United and Arsenal both showing an interest in taking the hugely experienced midfield enforcer to England as both clubs look to strengthen the centre of their midfield.

Both Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are looking to add power and experience to their respective midfields and the signing of Diarra would be ideal now he has proven his fitness. The need for more strength and leadership was evident for both the Red Devils and the Gunners last season especially when Darren Fletcher and Alex Song were missing for both clubs.

Diarra established his football reputation in Greece when he played for OFI Crete in the last 1990’s. However, after just 21 league appearances he moved to Holland and played for Vitesse. He spent three seasons with the Dutch club making 69 league appearances while scoring 9 goals. In this time he was sent off a total of 5 times earning a reputation for poor temperament. The current Arsenal team is perhaps lacking an leader in terms of physical strength which Diarra could be. He is not a dirty footballer but he is full blooded and would not shirk out of tackles which the same cannot be said of a number of the Gunners more lightweight midfielders.

In the summer of 2002 Diarra moved to Lyon where he established his reputation as one of the finest defensive midfielders in world football. In four seasons in France, he won a total of four league championships and four Trophee Des Champions (the equivalent of the Community Shield). He made 121 league appearances and was part of the Lyon team that reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

The Mali international moved to Real Madrid in August 2006 for 26 million euros. He played a key role in the club’s title successes in 2007 and 2008 but was heavily criticised in his first season for picking up 12 bookings in 33 league appearances. That sort of aggression is something the current Arsenal and perhaps Manchester United teams lack. Each have a number of small technical midfielders but in terms of standing up to more physical sides, the Gunners in particular have been found wanting. Diarra would give both teams a strong defensive platform to allow the more creative stars to shine knowing that the African star is protecting the back four.

Diarra was a mainstay of Fabio Capello’s side but had a disastrous 2008/09 season following a serious knee injury in Mali’s World Cup qualifier v Chad. Diarra returned to Madrid making a further 5 appearances before being forced to have an operation to rectify the condition of his knee. However, the defensive anchorman has now fully returned to fitness so should not be too much of a gamble for Manchester United or Arsenal.

Diarra has won over 50 caps for Mali and his leadership qualities plus his obvious size and physical strength make him the ideal signing for either the Gunners or the Red Devils. The player recently turned 29 but after returning to full fitness, he may well be on his way to either Old Trafford or the Emirates this summer.

Would you like to make a move for Diarra who is reported valued at £6.5m and is physically more suited to English football than the more technical style of Spain?

Can't see this happening, at least not for the reported £20M+ fee. When a player has been overlooked by Mourinho and then Wenger it tells me he can't be all that great, although personally I thought he looked very good playing for Portsmouth. It was Portsmouth though.

Also seems there could be attitude problems and a head like a sperm whale.

Diarra was never given much of a chance mainly due to Makelele at Chelsea and Flamini at Arsenal - but he would have been good enough.

Diarra would be a dream to have at United

Lassana Diarra 'due for transfer talks with Manchester United and Spurs' | Metro.co.uk

Diarra, 25, is being discussed as a £20million target for Tottenham as well as Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson prepared to spend a significant sum to bolster his midfield.

The French international has experience on these shores thanks to stints at Chelsea, Arsenal, and Portsmouth before he moved to the Spanish capital last year.

And, according to reports, his agent is trying to engineer a move back to England within the next few weeks after Jose Mourinho's arrival as Madrid's new manager.

Diarra was signed by Chelsea while Mourinho was in charge at Stamford Bridge in 2005, but after failing to hold down a first-team place he was sold to the Gunners in 2007, who in turn offloaded him to Pompey in 2008.

A successful spell under now Spurs manager Harry Redknapp followed before the coach departed for north London and Diarra was sold to big-spending Real for £19million.

Diarra's previously turbulent relationship with Mourinho, who was continually reluctant to play the tough-tackling midfielder, has led to widespread speculation he could leave the Bernabeu this summer.

And although he is thought to have expressed an interest in a reunion with Redknapp, the emergence of Tom Huddlestone at White Hart Lane means United currently lead the race for Diarra's signature as Ferguson is determined to add more guile to his midfield.

Either way, Diarra's unfortunate stomach problems which have led to his withdrawal from this summer's World Cup mean he has more time to look into his club options - with England a likely destination if he were to move on.

didnt realise hes only 25

he impressed me alot when ive seen him play

He could be useful, but if he changes club every year there will be a reason

He is not a priority and he is expensive

We have need of 4 players in this order:

1 striker
1 centre back
1 midfielder
1 goalkeeper

Bollocks. He's better than a fit Hargreaves.
Not really. Lass lacks things like subtlety (which is why Mascherano gets away with fouls), decision making (he tries the wrong option a lot) and composure (he makes the midfield more panicky if anything with bad fouls and silly passes), unlike the likes of Pirlo, Scholes and Xabi Alonso and yes, Hargreaves.

He charges into stupid tackles and doesn't actually even try to hide it, giving away fouls and free kicks in dangerous positions, as well as getting booked himself. He's got a good engine about him but he cannot use it properly at all. He lacks a football brain. He'll win you the ball but doesn't know what to do with it.

He desperately needs someone who can guide him, and certainly not in a team where he is the most defensive midfielder (he's far too raw for that role and does the opposite of defensive stability). In a bog-standard flat 4-4-2 he will be much better alongside an intelligent and experienced midfielder (i.e. Scholes). He can't work in Real Madrid's 4-2-2-2 as he needs to win the ball and kill attacks dead (like Felipe Melo's role for Brazil). Lass does the first OK, but the second not quite.

He's a talented player but I think moving to Real Madrid really hasn't taught him anything. At 25 it could be a little too late to start learning how to turn from a good midfielder to a great one - I do think he's that talented, but he has missed the boat.

He should really have stayed at Arsenal and fought for his place - he would have learnt a lot more under Wenger playing in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Or he could have not left Chelsea - Mourinho did favour him.

After picking up Hernadez & Smalling we are set in the striker and defensive positions. A midfielder is going to be our most realistic signing, albeit I don't think we'll sign Diarra. Lass is setting himself up to be the next Nicolas Anelka in terms of the number of his transfers in his relatively short career so far.

I think Lass is underrated here. I think he is just virtually a Makelele, but just an unexperienced one,

Also he can play RB just like Fletch and has a similar engine like Fletch does. I'd say Lass is a better dribbler and has a bit more pace then Fletch, but Fletch wins in terms of distrubution and contribution to the side.

I'd actually like a Fletch and Lass pairing, but that is we have a creative MF / Attacking MF which is world class behind Rooney which we certainly do not have one at this current moment ( unless Scholes was 25 again )

20m is quite steep, Lass lost a lot of consistency due to being played a few times at wing back, but he still pisses all over M.Diarra and only Xabi Alonso is better than him there in the circus. Good player... but if he came at 20m euros, he should go for that as for me, he didn't improve too much when he got there.

Manchester United step up chase for Real Madrid's Lassana Diarra

With Real Madrid having signed German midfielder Sami Khedira , Manchester United will intensify efforts to bring Lassana Diarra to Old Trafford.

The 23 year-old has spent two seasons at Real Madrid since moving from Portsmouth, but Diarra will now likely see his place at the Bernabeu come under greater threat, following the signing of Khedira from Stuttgart. Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with a move for the Frenchman for some time and now Spanish daily 'Sport' reports that the United boss will make his move.

'Sport' speculates that Manchester United would be willing to spend 24 million Euros on Diarra, who has also had spells in England with Chelsea and Arsenal. Diarra is an excellent box to box midfielder, particularly strong in a defensive role but also effective pushing forward.

Given that Owen Hargreaves shows no sign of returning from injury, there could well be a space in the Manchester United midfield for Diarra, who would battle Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick for a central midfield spot.

Yeah, sure

So he's failed to make the grade at arse, Chelsea and real. I can see why fergie would want to lash £20m on him........

20m....no way....

if someone offers 10m they ll eat his hand.

It s quite obvious that jose want to get rid of him and the best way to do that is to get some journo linking him to united

I think it's interesting that we're being linked with players with say less creativity then some people want.

I think tbh we have a lot of creativity in our side. Players like Nani, Valencia, Rooney, Berbatov and Carrick can all unlock defences. Perhaps getting another defensive player who could potentially play in a midfield 2, or hang back is something we could be looking to sign.

He has played more than 50 games for Real Madrid in the one and a half seasons he has been at the club, that classifies him as "failing to make the grade".

He is a decent player and one that we should have thoughts about signing if he were available for £15mil or under

hes actually really good for real.

hes only 23?!?!

I think he's a good player, personally. For the right price I think it could be a good signing for us or any other of the top clubs in the Premiership.

Dislike the dirty scumbag, but you are correct, he is a good player. He would give us a good combatitive presence in midfield, but I wouldn't spend anything above 14M (gbp) on him.

The misconceptions people have about Diarra are unreal, I still can never understand why Pelegrini dropped him last year to play Lady Gago.

Another reason why he's an odd coach, he was one of Real's best players in 08/09 and held it down for the majority last year. He's a very good player, unfortunately he's too similar to Fletcher in my opinion.

Great player for what he does. Sadly for him he does what Fletcher does and Fletcher is the better player.

Villa would do well to grab him up at that price, their middle is far too light.

With both Anderson and Hargreaves out till whenever - our weakest spot is a defensive / harrier midfielder. Even one that fouls a lot, if Fletcher is not available for whatever reason.

I agree with you that we definitely don't have a strong enough duo to play a midfield 2 only for big games.

Ozil would be a quality signing but, for this season am more concerned on our defensive mid cover.
