La Liga/Serie A/Bundesliga Draft

unbelievable that tevez and elber aint in this draft...

It's the same old debate though. Amazing that player x wasn't picked. But really it's not that amazing when there are league and tactical restrictions to consider.

For instance I think there were only 8 Serie A centre-forwards selected. Now the calibre of just about all of those - Ibra, Shev, Weah, Vieiri, Careca, Crespo, Signori - is beyond question. Trezeguet for example was a great finisher but I wouldn't place his all-round game in the ballpark of those strikers.

Ye, it's just fun to see what was left and maybe some "my unpicked team" like Chesters.

I was wondering about uniting Pires with Riquelme. But couldn't be sure how did he fair in Spain. I know he wasn't horrible, anybody would like to elaborate on his time in Villarreal?
He did quite well considering he was clearly past his prime and didn't get going for them until he was 34 or so. It's one of those you'd end up having to defend just how sub-prime he was, rather than celebrating his various good deeds in a yellow submarine shirt.

Agreed, I'm just trying to get folks to move to the next stage and say I reckon player X should have been picked instead of player Y.

Love the tactics. Has it been used before? I've shown this exact formation (like a 433 libero) to a couple people, might use it in another draft.

Elber
Mijatovic -----

Koke ------------- Sanchez
Di Biagio -- Marchisio

Leonardo -- Nowotny -- Dante --- Ramos

Peruzzi

Better unpicked names who had better league careers than Hagi and Blanc even if they weren't star names.
Careers don't matter, it's their peak. Blanc was Inter's player of the year and Hagi had a good spell with Real.

@Balu, how come we've never seen Ásgeir Sigurvinsson picked in a draft? Is the caf simply completely oblivious that he existed?

No clue, he's certainly a forgotten gem who deserves to be picked and talked about.

First I've heard of him I think (besides the mention in our match thread)

I'll have to check him out since you both same to rate him quite highly. Always nice to get some fresh faces drafted.

He was too old for this draft. He's considered Iceland's greatest ever player. I mentioned him somewhere in this draft, think it was a reply to Balu, because Beckenbauer said that he wished he was German because he was exactly the player they lacked at the time. He's a Stuttgart legend because he was instrumental in their '84 title campaign (where he was also voted the league's best player), made captain in '86 when they were runners-up in the UEFA Cup and he then refused offers from a Milan club and Bayern to stay with them. At 35 he still got good offers to play but chose to retire instead and become a scout for Stuttgart as he didn't feel he could contribute as much as he used to.

And got sold for bad defensive performance the next year. I seriously considered him but decided it was too risky!
He was sold because Manchester United made and offer and he was 35.

Two seasons at the club, one of which he was their best player. I'd say you could call that his peak in Serie A which is our criteria for this draft.

And there are players out there with more than one season of great performances.
For example, for this draft I'll take Naybet ahead of Blanc anyday.

Then I'd need to find a German or Italian AMC instead and I didn't particularly like any of them.

Has Micoud been mentioned as one of the players who missed out? He was absolutely sensational for Bremen, both in the league and in the CL and a bit unlucky that Zidane blocked his position in the nationalteam.

I knocked up this one very quickly at the start of the final round of picks, and I don't think a single one got chosen on the way back up

-----------------------------------Rossi
----------Barzagli------- Patrik Andersson-----------Naybet------------
---------------------Donato-----------------Wouters----------------------
Torricelli/Lombardo------------------------------------------Leonardo
--------------------------------Djalminha-----------------------------------
------------------Tevez--------------------Claudio Lopez

Not the most balanced line up, and I think Leonardo's wing back days were mostly behind him during his Milan peak, but that attacking three would produce some magic on their day.

Don't think he has. Aldo's problem with my picks were their careers in those leagues but I was going by peak and deemed a single season enough. Isolate a single season for Hagi and Blanc and you've got yourself two very good players.

I think Hagi could have legitimately squeezed in. But I think people didn't really want the hassle of defending a player whose most defining legacy is with Steau, Gala and Romania. And he's generally a bit under-rated on here at the best of times.

As for Blanc it was absolutely clear his best seasons came in France. And there was also the age/pace thing with his Serie A spell.

@Aldo @Stain when do you want to play guys? I'll send my writeup accroding to that.

Was Abidal picked?

I did want to pick Laurent Blanc but I already have Vieira, a very controversial player but I like Controversial Players LOL :wenger:

@VivaJanuzaj @MJJ

Are you still OK to start tonight after the 1st game?
