On my mobile now so a fuller explanation may arrive later. But they've never had anyone in Kahn's class and, Bats apart, nobody since then as good as Kopke or Illgner. Was never fully convinced by Barthez or Llama in the 1990s either. Not that they weren't talented keepers, but both were capable of a clanger. To be fair they had some solid custodians in the 2000s.

I guess if people go purely for stats he'd be missed out, but he played in an era when the defenders and general defensive game was another level. Also he was great In that CL run with sampdoria. Special player that could play anywhere in attack(but not as #10) as Trap tried to use him.

I can't name all the French GKs because some are eligible here but I could mention Lama / Barthez / Coupet / Lloris...

However, since 2006, the French GKs are weak: only Lloris and Ruffier are good.

Areola & Alban Lafont are promising for the future.

Indeed. Top scorer in the Serie A the year Sampdoria won the Scudetto. Made the difference in that team, which stands out as a special one, given the quality of that league. Was excellent for Juve too, in a somewhat different role. Great player for me - had many strings to play on (in spite of not being a playmaker as such, as you rightly say), which made him adapt to different set-ups and partners over the years.

He was just considered as the 2nd LB in France behind Lizarazu. When Liza retired in 2004, he failed to succeed him because of Abidal.

Don't hate France at all. Cantona and Zidane are pretty much my favourite players. I just don't think his style of play fitted with the national team's tactics is all.

I can see the rationale behind a Pippo/Bobo partnership, but a Vieri/Vialli pairing would have been a real handful for any defence in the draft.
