There are better Serie A fullbacks than Carboni left IMO.

Of the picked left backs I think Candela stands out as a 9th round pick - there wasn't much between him and Cafu when they played together.

Sure, he was brilliant with Roma but generally disappointing with France.

Yeah I think so too...one in particular which I was very close to picking but went with Benarrivo instead of him.

He'll be La Liga though and his record there with Valencia is solid.

Yeah, I can get on board with that though I don't remember any games from him for the national team.

It probably didn't help with the national side that he faced that level of competition in Lizarazu. At Roma he was fantastic though as you say, that 3-5-2 with Totti remains one of the best Serie A sides of the last 20 years or so.

Nice. A little surprised he never got any international recognition with his performances at Dortmund and Rangers. That said he was competing with Kahn, Illgner and Kopke and there will have been few national teams with such a deep pool of goalkeeping talent at any such time.

I don't think that changes anything really given the majority of his peak years would be in the Serie A league and not La Liga where he moved aged 32.

He is a solid pick, I was just surprised by that initial reaction as IMO better picks have gone through.

Agreed. It's the limitation thing, though. I suspect that explains most of my "why the feck hasn't he been picked?" players.

But not all of them, it has to be said.

Only Italy and France had an equivalent & impressive deep pool of talented GK in the 1990s-2000s IMHO.

Sometimes, a National coach doesn't want to take the best 3 GK in order to ensure the best atmosphere. In France, the 3rd goal has generally a level far below the 2nd: he is happy to be part of the group for an international tournament and won't be viewed as an envious challenger. The 3rd GK is important in the training sessions and the team-building: he has to contribute positively to the well-being of the GK number 1.

For example,

- WC 2010: Lloris-Mandanda VS. Carasso
- WC 2014: Lloris-Mandanda VS. Landreau

That's a fair point. Although I don't recall France (ever) particularly having a great pool of keepers.
