I think Thiago Silva can suffer from a modern-day-defenders-aren't-what-they-used-to-be brush, but he's very complete, has held his own against the top attackers of this era, and his influence is such that the Brazilian back line turns into a quivering wreck in his absence.

He's obviously a splendid defender but what strikers has he come up against?

First season at Milan he played next to Nesta and they finished 3rd. He came up against Del Piero (34)/XXX from a Juve side that finished 7th, Totti (34) & XXX at Roma who came 2nd, Zlatan was at Barca, Eto'o/XXX sure at a strong Inter side that won, XXX (Not that one) at Napoli came 6th + a few decent unnamed strikers.

Second season XXX came to Napoli but more importantly Zlatan arrived and he had another season with Nesta and they won.

His 3rd season he had to take more responsibilty and Zlatan won them the league again.

French league.

He's not better than Ferrara in my book. Ayala is closer. Still a good defender but these are reason why i think you are over-rating him.

imo he's had times he was by far more important to Real's success than Ronaldo, when the latter was too busy complaining about his teammates Modric gave him the balls to score.

Not necessarily but it does show that the argument that he only looks good in the league because he faced poor attackers is false.

I'm a big fan of T.Silva and he'd be much more highly regarded if he hadn't stayed at PSG. He'd be perfect at Barca.

I'm not saying I positively disagree with the gist of your particular criticism here, but it's a slippery slope to focus to that extent on the overall quality of the league.

A player does not necessarily diminish in quality along with his surroundings. Maradona wouldn't have been a worse player if he had played in the Bundesliga rather than the Serie A. You have to look at the individual player to determine his quality and his form (which is what is relevant here), not simply at the team he played for – or the league he played in.

And part of that assessment has to be what he did elsewhere. You have to determine the relevant form based on what he did in the league he's representing - that's obvious - but his overall quality can't be artificially re-constructed based on this alone, that would be absurd.

Yeah to me he's their best player currently and probably in the recent past. It was quite telling last year when he was injured they really struggled.
