La Liga 2018/19

Calling Ter Stegen overrated for a meanstreak (crap defending by Pique and Lenglet this season) is like calling De Gea overrated by the current -1 goal.difference.

I think Lucho got himself caught in a first season where he overachieved, and as he started to tinker with the team (3 man defense with Wingbacks, a little more flexibility in midfield) he found himself out of the club.

Got this horrible feeling in my gut that once Messi is gone or declining, our awful board and lack of sporting direction will bring us to the dark ages of 99/04 Barcelona

It's going to be so frightening without Messi, isn't it?

Lucho's first season was so weird because I remember he was on the verge of getting fired in January of 2015 with Atletico Madrid set to be his last match. Barca won 3-1 and then had one of the best runs of the decade for the remainder of the season. However, he completely bypassed the midfield during his tenure and I feel like it wasn't until Arthur was signed did we finally get a "Xavi-lite" replacement.

Lucho's issue was also rotating far too much whereas Valverde seems to have the opposite issue. Barca had a brutal October schedule wise and fared really well so maybe the International Break will really help. I hate having a big match as soon as International Break is over, but the Atletico match should be epic.

What does that have to do with shot stopping?

Its a measure of how good you are at dealing with shots, not the number of clean sheets you have. If you struggle dealing with easy shots it doesnt matter if you have the most clean sheets in the league. It doesnt make shot stopping your strength.

One, he struggled with an easy shot once this season?.

This is like saying Ronaldo or Messi aren't the best because once in a while they miss an open sitter in front of an empty goal

Ter Stegen is easily one of the best shot stoppers around. Irrefutably in the top 3 alongside Oblak and De Gea (when he isn’t playing for Spain).

As I said, this was in response to those claiming he's definitely number 1 shot stopper.

Curious to watch Atletico-Barca on saturday. It could be a mayhem for Barca based on their current form.

I consider Oblak to be monstrously overrated. I'll never forgive his dreadful 2016 UChL final performance.

Finally someone who has the guts to say it out loud:)

Ter Stegen is the No. 1 for me and it is not even close this year, when you consider all the blunders of the usual top guys like Neuer, De Gea etc.

Yeah, Ter Stegen is currently the best goalkeeper in the top leagues..

Taking into account Barcelona's performances this season, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they comfortably beat Atletico, and then proceed to drop points against some minnows next week.

Messi is the key. But I can easily see Barça conceding 2. But as I said, Messi scoring two + participating in two more.

I'm betting 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, etc.

Is there any information on Atletico's CB situation? Last I heard all four of them were injured to some extent at least.

Barcelona aren't playing well but Atletico have been even worse and they have a bunch of injuries. Don't think it will be anywhere near the same quality of match we're used to.

I’ll be happy with a draw but our defense has been a joke

If you mean defense as in how your team has been defending then yes I agree. Your midfield has been the crux of the problems as they do basically no defending and Busquets seemingly can't even pass anymore which would make him useless if so. I don't envy your CBs and goalkeeper considering how little help the get from midfield and full backs have to do a lot of running as they are required to perform their duty at both ends.

Also nothing is being done about your right hand side. Considering how you play you might as well do like Madrid with Lucas Vázquez and play someone like that there because he's not winning 1v1's which is a frequent situation for Sergi Roberto and he offers little going forward besides returning the pass he got from Rakitic.

That's my take on it based on the past 4 games.

Cheers

We need to start Semedo and Vidal

Our midfield looks exhausted lately. Coutinho returning and Rakitic getting some time off should help.

Amazing how Alaves could top the table for 24 hours tomorrow :D
The Spanish Leicester City perhaps? Abelardo has done well so far considering where Alaves were before he took over last season. Already played Barcelona and have beaten Real Madrid. Espanyol has made a good start as well under their new manager Rubi. Currently 5th in the league

Who knows. Barca should walk this league, but they don't seem to care too much about it atm.

A very long way to go before talk about that. Arsenal and Valencia are good examples of teams who have had several seasons where they fly out the gates and then end up nowhere near the title. If they're still around the top in 2 or 3 months then its a maybe

They can finish in the Europa League, considering how Valencia, Bilbao and Villarreal are struggling this season.

Alaves to win the league is still 1000/1 if you wanna waste some money. :D

Lively game so far. Eibar had a tremendous volley turned onto the post by Courtois; and Bale had a scorcher correctly ruled out for offside.
Now Benzema's dink cleared off the line.

Great save from Courtois at point-blank range from Kike, but Escalante gets it in in the resulting scramble (think Ceballos kicked the ball into him in the end...)

1-0 Eibar
