La Liga 2013-2014

OK, so that's it then, Atletico de Madrid are La Liga Champions 2013/14.

Could have been a lot worse.

Levante (A) has 0-0 written all over it IMO. Atléti's morale will be shot to bits for that game after going out of the CL to a 90+5' Torres goal.

1:0 Athletic. Might be an olimpico, Iturraspe, or Laporte. Weird goal.

Wow, olimpico from Susaeta.

What the fck. Emery has Rakitic on the bench?

I've not heard that he's injured so presumably Emery doesn't want him to play a full game. I guess he'll bring him on after an hour to try and get a result. Surprising decision, but Emery does move in mysterious ways at times :smirk:

Makes literally no sense at all. A win in this game gets them to 4th on head-to-head right? Meanwhile they lead Valencia 2-0 from the 1st leg in the EL, so wtf.

Yeah, first match was a 1-1, so a win for Sevilla here would have put them in fourth.

I used to be surprised by his big match decision-making when he was at Valencia as well.

So that's that then, I don't see Atletico giving this away anymore. Fair play to Simeone and his men, they deserve it more than us and Barca for no spending as much and having a solid team wihout big stars.

It's been an extraordinary season. The sheer consistency of him and his team - I never thought I'd get the chance to talk about Atletico and consistency in the same sentence.

Weirdly, the only Atletico fan I know lives in Germany. He keeps sending me texts, today's was, "It's happening, isn't it?"

@Pippa WhoScored gives it to Susaeta, so olímpico.

I must be in reflective mood, Susaeta's goal triggered an old memory in me.

As a kid I used to watch United training. I remember a mesmerising hour watching George Best (all alone, the other players had gone home) with a big net of footballs practising corners - inswingers, directly into the net.

2-0

With Emery reminding the Valencia fans why most of them were happy when he left.

Ander Herrera's been getting a few goals lately, eh?

Are Barca likely to keep a clean sheet today? I know they'll probably win, but what are the odds they can keep a clean sheet?

Yeah, it must feel a bit surreal to them. How long ago is it that they won it for the last time? 15 years? 20? I don't have the slightest recollection of them being champions. They're not completely there yet but I'd be surprised if they pulled a Liverpool.

I think they won't lose the title if they get past Chelsea, their confidence will be sky high and would give them that extra wind for the last push.

The issue will be if they go out and the manner of it.

Barcelona can't get close to the Villareal goal. Two or three seasons ago you'd fancy them to play their way through Villareal's lines but there's something slower, less inventive and less assertive about this year's Barcelona. Shades of 2008 about this performance: Lots of the ball but nothing all that decisive happening and nothing looking like happening either.

Barcelona no longer win the ball high up the pitch, which means their players are too far from each other in attacking positions when they get forward. There are no overloads on either side, no easy options for passes. Really feels like end of a cycle stuff.

Very impressed by Bilbao this year, really want to see them in the CL next season. They are playing some good football and Valverde has done a superb job. Any chance of Barcelona going after him in the summer?

The Villareal-Barca game so far has been very boring. And just as I say this Villareal miss a huge chance, good job by Bartra there.

Great pass for that goal, deserved to be fair. Should have been 1 up seconds before that.

Plays into Atlético's hands if Barcelona slip up tonight.

Alves nowhere to be found for that goal, becoming an increasingly common trend now.

1-0 Villareal and its been coming. Barcelona have no answer to the Villareal counter, in fact they seem to have no answer to anyone's counter. Since Barca stopped pressing high up the pitch their defensive weaknesses are getting exposed all the time. Villareal should have taken the lead two minutes before they scored and would have if not for a clearance off the line. Contrast that with Barcelona who have had lots of the ball but never really looked dangerous.

Shouldn't we want Barcelona to win, so that they have something to play for and will give it their all vs atletico?
Yeah, we should but I think the league is a lost cause by now unfortunately. They won't drop 4 points playing Elche at home and Barcelona in their last game who'll never let us win the league anyway if it depends on them. Maybe they'll draw or lose against Levante but it wouldn't be enough anyway. I have no hope left for us winning it, we'd need a miracle.

Such a great season of Spanish football. Atletico to win the league and Bilbao getting a Champions League spot. Great stuff to see.

Great goal. Villareal 2-0 up. Barcelona again succumb to the quick counter. Look at Messi's face...
