La Liga 2013-2014

I think his overall team effort has improved greatly over the course of this season; I remember in 2012-13 he had several selfish moments where he made things more difficult for himself and his teammates. He is still really inconsistent with his passing and his touch but once he gets moving it's great to see. I do think his dribbling has gotten better this season as well with his increase in directness. It's helped Griezmann a lot and Vela didn't get the credit he deserved except from Mexico, I think -- but even many of them don't care for him after the national team scandal.

He's had three (1, 2, 3) goals taken away for offside, he's had two (1, 2) penalty shouts denied -- he is the penalty taker -- and if he had other teammates who could convert their chances more often, he would probably have more than 15 assists (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), and this is my favourite one: 7.

Vela's dribbling reminds me a lot of Suárez in style. Neither of them are the "elegant" type of dribblers, both above-average top speed, inconsistent first touches and they both look a little bit awkward IMO. Suárez isn't as one-footed as Vela though. This or this are things I could imagine Suárez doing for example. I'm a sucker for someone who can get himself out of a tight situation like this:

I would love to see him at Real Madrid...he is a lifelong fan (his hero is Hugol IIRC) and he is a very good player. Only 24 as well. He just needs to develop any kind of right foot.

I really hope we play well against Bayern and get the result and that things don't go tits up after all the hard work in the first leg
Wouldn't mind that! :p Good match by Madrid yesterday, those two Ronaldo goals were superb.

There are 3 very interesting matches in succession today. I'm really interested in the Bilbao - Sevilla match, that one should be a cracker. Valencia - Atleti is a potential banana skin for the capital club, but Valencia have nothing to play for in the league, have they? I'm certain they will rest players before the EL match so Atleti to grind out a win for me. Villareal - Barca to finish it off. With all the things going on there lately I think Villareal could potentially get a point or even more out of this. Really hope to see Oliver Torres play tonight as well!

Full-strength Atléti v fairly strong Valencia.

Atlético: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Filipe Luís; Raúl García, Gabi, Tiago, Koke; Villa, Diego Costa.
Valencia: Guaita; João Pereira, Ricardo Costa, Mathieu, Gayá; Fuego, Parejo; Barragán, Jonás, Piatti; Alcácer.

Villa with a world class effort, narrowly wide. Would've been an insane goal.

Ref just went over to admonish Diego Costa for a foul on Ricardo Costa, stands on Ricardo Costa's foot in the process

Atléti score right on HT! 0-1. Raúl García with a header. Great assist from the captain Gabi.

Yesss! Missing the game, how are Atleti doing? Typical solid away performance?

Yep. Both sides with only a single attempt on target so far I think. Diego Costa is a beast once again though. Huge result so far, Atléti hadn't won at the Mestalla in their last 10 league visits apparently, and unable to score in the last two.

What a ball! Diego Costa played in 1v1 by a superlative through ball from Koke, but he hits it straight at Guaita, that should've always been 2-0.

Great from the Valencia fans when David Villa was being subbed-off - very classy :)

Feghouli on for Barragán, Arda came on earlier for Villa. Can see this becoming more end-to-end. Great chance just now for Valencia, Jonás header at the far post but some block from Filipe Luís. Set up by Feghouli as well with an excellent ball to switch play to Piatti who produced that outstanding cross, which had Courtois in no-man's land for once.

Sosa on for the goal scorer Raúl García (his 17th goal of the season in all comps, by the way)... Simeone digging in, Pizzi doing his best to throw the kitchen sink at it. Valencia have an attacking line of Alcácer, Piatti, Edu Vargas, Feghouli ánd Jonás on the pitch right now. Tense 20 minutes to follow.

Feghouli inches wide with a thunderous strike! Atléti under massive pressure now, they need their transitions to be more precise because they're not threatening that much anymore.

Atléti are blocking literally everything, but they need some breathing room or it's just going to be a matter of statistical probability before a (heavily deflected) shot creeps in :D

Have Atleti been parking the bus Chelsea-style?

Do you need to ask? :D

They were in decent control in the 1st half, since their goal it's just defense v attack basically. Diego Costa missed a glorious chance on the counter from an awesome Koke through ball in the 2nd half and they've put a bit more pressure on the Valencia DF in the last 5 min.

Guaita denies Diego Costa again, very good save this one. Again an excellent through ball to find him, the weight on it was impeccable.

I've been watching bits of the game between doing other things. This second half's been mostly Valencia's hasn't it? Or am I just seeing their bits?

Yeah like I mentioned in a post above, 2nd half mainly attack v DF, but Atléti gaining upper hand in last 10 minutes -- breaking with more regularity and transitions more precise as well, Diego Costa could've had two goals in the 2nd half and Koke one in the 1st.

FT 0-1. These refs are crazy, there was a 3 minute delay after the injury time was put up

What a massive win that is. I think they've got this now.

Continental refs never really seem that eager to go over the injury time imposed, they seem to treat it more as a maximum amount of time added on, not a minimum.

Gabi and Koke were outstanding, the former will be such a huge loss against Chelsea.

Especially in Spain. In fact, a few years back, I seem to recall lots of games being whistled right on the 90th minute. Especially games that were already decided.
