PSG were desperate when he signed his last deal and gave him those terms. They could easily have accepted Madrid’s bid. They gave him the option to veto the +1 and also promised him a ridiculous amount of money to see out his penultimate year.

I said in my post that I think it might be contractual. I am speculating. Not an expert in contract law but in a case like this, I would guess the employer would want ample time (in this case a year) as a notice period to allow them get a fee for him. Since the player has a veto on the optional year.

Ronaldo's prime and talent is exaggerated to no end by his fans. He was a great footballer but to say that Mbappe isn't atleast as good a footballer is not true.
In terms of attributes: Mbappe is more explosive, a better dribbler and passer. Ronaldo was a better goalscorer, better at freekicks, better at longshots and much better in the air.
Interms of performances, Mbappe has done much better individually for France than Ronaldo ever did for Portugal. Although Ronaldo played in an Inferior team.
At club level, comparisons are more difficult. Mbappe plays in an Inferior league for by far its best club (that is run very poorly and has a eelatively poor mid and defence). Ronaldo played in one of the 2 best teams in one of the best leagues and had a better team (midfield and defence) behind him. Mbappe has given some great performances against big teams in the ucl (Barcelona, Bayern) to suggest he can.
All in all, Mbappe may never have the club career that Ronaldo had but he isn't an Inferior footballer to Ronaldo at any age. Ronaldo's greatness is about his numbers, success, longevity more than anything else he did on the pitch.
I dont see that as being likely personally. If it were contractual he'd have stated or it would have been leaked that this was the reason.

Mbappé negociated a 2+1 contract and reportedly told PSG he would never leave with a free transfer. According to reports backed by the content of PSG's letter to Mbappé, his choice about the extra year was supposed to depend on the additions to the team during the transfer window. He even took pictures with a "2025" jersey after his extension. But then he sent a letter saying that he wouldn't trigger his option 2 months after extending and 1 month and a half before the end of the 2022 summer transfer window, showing that what was mentionned during the negociations by Mbappé's side was just BS.
He basically claimed publicly it was all about the team, the club, perfomances etc. when he in fact negociated his contract in bad faith and planned his exit all along.
Now, it's obvious that PSG had it coming because they allowed themselves to be in this position. But Mbappé's behaviour was totally dishonest and far from the PR image he's trying to build for the last decade.

He didn't had a veto and the distinction is important. He was the only one that could extend the contract, he didn't veto an extension, he just didn't trigger the extension and he had to notify PSG before July 31st which he did.

No doubting his goalscoring ability but Mbappe has more UCL goals and world cup goals than Ronaldo at 24. He may not achieve as much or become the greater footballer but is atleast as good a footballer everything considered.
I have always maintained that Ronaldo lacked that "on the ball genius" that players like Messi, R9, Ronaldinho possessed. His goalscoring and longevity has elevated his status a great deal.
Mbappe agreed to a contract. As did the club. At the end of the day, Mbappe leaving on a free or not is irrelevant. That’s his choice.
