Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid watch

Good post.

He doesn't have the production/talent of Messi to walk about that much on the field(and I think Messi spent less time walking too).

How he closes this season and plays next season will be quite telling for his club career legacy.
Messi walked A LOT.

It was absolutely necessary for him to manage his stamina. No point in being out of breath when the ball comes to you and you have to wriggle your way past 3, 4 or 5 players. The same goes for C. Ronaldo, R9, or any of these players who are so crucial going forward that you have to take them off defensive duties.

It becomes a problem when their output doesn't balance out the fact that the rest of the team is carrying them.

I don't have a 'thing for him', I just think he's a great player, and there's mountains of evidence to suggest that I'm correct. Same as I think any other great player is a great player. The problem with this forum and football discussion online in general is that everyone has access to every single game of every single player now, so people get judged on a game by game basis. Every time any top player has a bad game or a run of bad form, all of a sudden, they're a bum.

In reality, even great players are good sometimes and bad at others. I'm sure if this forum had existed when Maradona moved to Barcelona, there would be people on here saying Maradona was rubbish. I mean, when United played Barca in the CWC, Robson dominated the game and Maradona did nothing.

I can't imagine what this forum would be like in judging a hyped up player like Diego after a game like that. And he's a far greater player than Kylian Mbappe.
Nah.

Maradona was 22 at the time and had then to contend with hepatitis in his first season at Barca and a career threatening injury in his second. He still bagged 38 goals in 56 games. Most would agree that if he was fit during the whole of his second season, Barca would've clinched the title.

His talent and attacking contribution never were in question, it was rather his lifestyle.

Mbappé is now 26 and is approaching the peak of his career (if he doesn't already have it behind). He's a player who heavily relies on pace and I predict a quite rapid decline.

He's got a stellar international career but at a club level there's absolutely nothing to write home about. He pretty much stagnated since 2020 due to him staying at PSG for much longer than he should've. He has now two seasons to turn the tide.

I remember "Messi walks around whenever the ball isn't near him" complaints as far back as late 2011, at his absolute peak. It was bizarre to watch but of course he's such an amazing talent you'd absolutely let him do that if it meant you could keep him on the pitch an extra 5 games a season.

Comparisons to Messi and CR7 are only going to hurt Mbappé and anyone that comes immediately after them. No point bringing that up really.

You didn't read what I actually wrote. If this forum had existed when Maradona was playing for Barcelona and there was a game by game referendum on him (like there is with all the top guys now), he absolutely would have been questioned, about a lot more than his lifestyle. Of course there would also be much praise, but the point is the drawing of all-encompassing conclusions on the basis of a game, or a month of play.

Maradona himself lamented that he did not win the title with Barca, when he was playing with (in his words) the best players in Spain.

The wider point is that most careers have ups and downs and it is difficult to look at the whole picture when we are in the middle of a particular career. Mbappe has only just started at Madrid, let's actually wait and see what happens, rather than performing the funeral rites after 3 months.

I saw several PSG games with the trio of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

Neymar was a better player than Mbappe, but he's always injured. I don't know how Neymar will come back from his injury now. But when the two shared the pitch, Neymar was clearly superior.

Neymar was fantastic when healthy and clearly better at PSG than Mbappé. And in regards to Neymar coming back from injury: he has basically retired. I saw some clips of him in Saudi Arabia. He looked as if he’d lost all joy playing and I cannot fault him for it.

Not in 21/22 he wasn't. Mbappé was significantly more impactful and effective

No, the other poster was right. Aside from injuries, Neymar was always better. Mbappe scored goals but Neymar was creating everything.

Edit: Misread what you wrote, you might be right about the period you referred to.

Even though he scored today he just looks mentally burdened playing for Madrid, it's like the shirt weighs 100kg on him that he makes a ton of errors he didn't make previously. Even if Mbappe has lost a touch of pace recently due to being heavier it doesn't explain his poor touches, many top players like R9 or Kane have gained weight or slowed down but their 1st and 2nd touches don't become sloppy. I don't see him staying in La Liga for long if his form doesn't improve drastically, Mbappe doesn't look happy despite scoring and he can't let his market value plummet too much due to lukewarm performances as it'll affect his next contract and future wages.

I think the PSG wages case has taken its toll on him. There's still time for him to turn it around.
