Kylian Mbappé joins PSG on one year loan with option to buy

And this is why the prices have rocketed the way they have. One club starts by paying silly money for a player they want and then it becomes a case of "well if he was worth that much then our player must be worth even more. it has always been the case but i think it really started to escalate when City signed Robinho

To be honest I think it came before that. I think Florentino Perez started it with blowing transfer records out of the water with Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo.

Right now we're seeing the new PL deal making even "minor" English clubs big players in the transfer market. It's mad money out there.

It looks increasingly likely that he will be sold to Madrid and stay in Monaco another season. It'll give him a chance to still develop in an environment he's comfortable with during a world-cup year. Cristiano Ronaldo will be one year older which means he'll probably play a little less which will give Mbappe a chance to get meaningful games under his belt in Spain. Of course, by then, Zidane may not even be the manager anymore so I hope it's not solely Zidane who wants Mbappe, because he may not even get to manage him in a year.

Even if Zidane doesnt win anything next season, they wont fire him.

What a player, one reason why I am a little against signing Morata for an inflated fee is that they will go out and buy him. Rather than paying 80 million I would blow the budget on mbappe and offer 120 million.
If Madrid want him so bad then they may want to sell before they buy. Why are we helping them?

We can easily bid 150 with maybe 30-50 in add ons. Probably 180 pounds before add ons is our limit. This isnt over by any means and im not sure real can match that. This kid will go at a world record fee and woodwards job is to muster enough cash to make sure no one else can stomach any more financial pain.

This kid is special, he may be the player of his generation after ronaldo and messi retire. The commercial value of that is immense, everybody realises that now and that means the transfer fee will reflect that. Even if we have to draw on our revolver and increase the debt we should do it. The commercial revenue stream if he fulfils his potential will more than justify the expenditure.

He doesn't want to come though, in your scenario we'd just end up with no reinforcements at all going into next year, just to hamper what is obviously an inevitable move to Madrid at some point within the next 2 years.

How do we know he won't come? I know he dreams of Madrid but I would rather have him for 2 years and sell for a profit than not have him at all. Morata for 80 million or mbappe for 130 million, no contest for me. We are meant to be the richest club in the world. Why are we setting our sights on Madrid's cast offs?

It's pretty clear where he's going to end up, we're obviously in for him this summer as well as Morata in reality, and we could probably afford both this summer. The fact we'll buy Morata doesn't mean we'd instantly just drop all interest in Mbappe, it's just clear he'll pick Madrid, it's a better destination for him for a million odd reasons that we don't need to *get into.
Not going for Moratta now would just result in us getting neither player.

Mbappe is a genuinely good talent. But, he will underperform next season. It's best for him to stay at Monaco. Mourinho has many times mentioned that pressure plays a lot of significance in player's performance. While addressing Rashford's struggles in the second season, he brought up the example of Ryan Giggs –

"I investigated the history of some young players at the club. One is one of the greatest players this club has ever had – Ryan Giggs. His second season was not comparable with the season when he started. Then, in the third season, he reached the level of Giggs. It was the final explosion of Giggs. That happens with many youth players. They are free when they first come, free of responsibilities and to express themselves. Opponents don’t know them, they’re caught by surprise. That changes in the second season."

I agree with Mourinho's insights on this.

It's not just Mourinho's opinion. Even SAF dealt with the young talent in a similar way. Whenever there was an air of wariness on the pitch leading up to an uninspired performance, he introduced the flair of young players rather than the creativity of experienced players. A good example is the way he used Macheda. Macheda was a mediocre talent. Yet, he had a lot of flair. SAF used him appropriately to bag some key goals for us and then later kept him in the oblivion to aid his progress, thereby benefitting both the player as well as the club.

Mourinho is smart and is also aware of such an impact that young players possess. That's why, he started Morata instead of Ronaldo against Barcelona in March 2013 and won that game. It was also Morata's first full 90 minutes as a senior player. Mourinho also cares enough for the development of youth. Unfortunately, he had never stayed at any club long enough to prove that. Hopefully, he can prove himself in that area by staying much much longer at our club.

Admittedly, I haven't seen him every week this season. But is there much that this kid can do that a focused on form Martial can't?

Martial's lack of focus and intensity had been a red flag ever before we bought him, which is why his first season carrying our attack was surprising to most people. On form an in focus he is right up there with any young payer in Europe but that's his achilles heel.

Personally, I don't think he's much/any better than Rashford. Still waiting to see what Mbappe does better than Rashford.

You only need to open your eyes then. One thing he doesn't that Rashford does so often, (over)run into blind alleys. Try to take on players from weird positions.
They are arguable overrated because they are young promising players but Mbappé has definitely showed more promise, in the CL specially.

I'd rather we spent some time trying to get his focus back rather than dropping that much money on a player who isn't that much of an upgrade on Martial. Just makes more sense to me. Martial has had a very turbulent personal life this past year. Hopefully moving beyond that will help regain his focus.

Whilst I can't agree or disagree with that opinion, I can sort of see what you mean in that they have similar styles of play. Again, not sure we need to buy this kid when he's not too different in style to Martial and Rashford.

Rashford could do no wrong last year. Was making all the right runs, finishing off chances etc. Just the same as I see Mbappe doing this year. I'm eagerly looking forward to see what Mbappe does in his second year?!

Yea, I think you understand what I'm trying to say. Don't get me wrong, if we have a chance of signing him, I'd jump at it. But I won't be too gutted as we have Rashford. I see so much similarities in boths first season, it's really uncanny.

2nd season will be tougher indeed as defences will more focused on him. It is going to be interesting alright, so far though, we can only judge on what we've seen him. It doesn't say anything about they will all perform for the next 5-6 seasons.

As an 18 year old there are two players in the history of the game that matched this kind of output + performance at a high level. Ronaldo Fenómeno and Pelé (although I might be forgetting someone). He has performed very well in CL knockouts and internationally too. I don't think people are understanding just how good he's been.

I have no doubt that Madrid will spend a bunch of money on him this summer. There's no way he gets loaned either and I wouldn't be surprised if he manages to bench Benzema next season.

Not much they have both the same level or talent, regardless of what you might get from this ballon D'or happy thread. Was very impressed tonight though with his maturity. Already knew he was a physical beast.

You forgot our Michael Owen.
